Four days since Theo died.
Mira hadn't spoken in three of them.
She sat in the corner of our quarters, staring at nothing, hands folded in her lap. The same hands that had tried to save him. The same hands that had felt his life slip away.
Darius trained constantly. Dawn till dusk. Pushing past limits, breaking through pain, never stopping. If he stopped, he'd have to think. If he thought, he'd have to feel.
Vera grew stronger every day, but quieter. Theo had been the first to trust her after Echoes. The first to call her friend. She wore his memory like a wound that wouldn't close.
Lyra organized. Planned. Kept us moving. Someone had to.
Mei Lian stayed close to me. Always. The bond carried our shared grief, but also our shared strength. We held each other at night. Said nothing. Breathed together.
The Curator appeared on day four.
"The Network feels your grief. They will use it. They will attack when you are weakest."
I looked at my broken family. At the empty space where Theo used to stand.
"Then we get stronger."
"There is another way. A dangerous way."
I waited.
"Theo's soul... it lingers. Not fully gone. The Network's machines, the immortals he killed, the magic of this place—something held part of him back."
My heart stopped.
Mei Lian's hand found mine. Squeezed.
"You could bring him back. But the cost—"
"I don't care about cost."
"You should. The cost is not yours alone."
---
The Gathering
I called everyone together.
Mira looked up when I mentioned Theo's name. First time in days she'd reacted to anything.
Darius stopped mid-stride. Listened.
Vera leaned forward. Lyra put down her maps.
"What do you mean, 'bring him back'?" Mira's voice cracked from disuse.
The Curator materialized.
"His soul fragment is trapped between worlds. The immortals he killed—their dying magic latched onto him. Held part of him here. Normally, this fades within a week. But..."
"But what?" Darius demanded.
"But there is a ritual. Ancient. Dangerous. It could pull the fragment back, reunite it with whatever waits beyond, and restore him fully."
Mira stood. Shaking. "Then we do it. Now."
"The cost—"
"I don't care!"
"You will." The Curator's voice was gentle but firm. "The ritual requires a life for a life. Not in sacrifice—in exchange. Someone must give up their future to restore his."
Silence.
"What does that mean?" Vera asked quietly.
"It means the one who performs the ritual will lose something precious. Not death. But... potential. The life they would have lived. The future they would have had. It will be different. Smaller. Shorter."
Mira stepped forward. "I'll do it. I'm a healer. This is what healers do."
"Mira—" I started.
"No." She looked at me. Tears streaming. "I couldn't save him. Let me do this."
The Curator studied her.
"You understand the cost?"
"I understand I can't live without trying."
---
The Ritual
Three days of preparation.
The Curator drew ancient circles. Gathered rare components. Explained steps we barely understood.
Mira meditated. Prepared herself. Said goodbye to the future she'd imagined.
The rest of us stood guard. The Network would feel this. They'd come.
They did.
---
The Attack
Halfway through the ritual, they arrived.
Seven immortals. More than before. They'd gathered their forces, knowing we'd try something desperate.
Darius met them first. Fire and fury.
Vera fought beside him, silent and deadly.
Lyra coordinated from shadows, feeding information, predicting moves.
Mei Lian and I protected the ritual chamber. The bond made us faster, stronger, together.
But there were too many.
One broke through.
---
The Chamber
Mira knelt in the circle, hands on Theo's chest. Light poured from her—life, future, potential—flowing into him.
The immortal lunged.
I intercepted. Took a hit meant for her. Kept fighting.
But the distraction cost seconds. Precious seconds.
The light flickered.
Mira screamed.

The Result
Theo opened his eyes.
But something was wrong.
He looked at us. Recognized us. Smiled.
"I'm back?"
Mira collapsed. Vera caught her.
Theo tried to stand. Couldn't. His body was weak—too weak. The ritual had restored his soul, but not his strength. Not fully.
"What's wrong with me?" His voice was small. Scared. Like the old Theo.
I looked at the Curator.
"The ritual was interrupted. His soul is complete, but his body... it did not fully recover. He will live. But he will never fight again."
Theo's face crumbled.
"I can't—I can't fight?"
"No."
---
The Cost
Mira woke hours later. Weak. Changed.
She looked at her hands. Tried to heal a small cut. Nothing happened.
"Your future was the price," the Curator explained gently. "Your magic. Your healing. Your potential. All given to bring him back."
Mira stared at her useless hands.
Then she looked at Theo, sleeping in the next room. Alive. Breathing. Here.
"I'd do it again."

Aftermath
Theo cried when he learned what Mira sacrificed.
She held him. Stroked his hair. Said nothing.
Darius stood in the doorway, watching. His jaw tight. His eyes wet.
Vera sat alone, processing another loss disguised as victory.
Lyra made plans. Someone had to.
Mei Lian held me. The bond carried my grief, my relief, my confusion.
"What now?" she whispered.
I looked at my broken family. At the two who'd given everything for each other. At the immortals we'd killed and the ones still out there.
"We mourn. We heal. We get stronger." I kissed her forehead. "And we never let anyone else pay this price."
