Three days of rest. Three days of love. Three days of learning new power.
Mei Lian and I barely left our chamber. The bond made every touch electric, every moment deeper. She learned my body. I learned hers. We learned us.
Mornings, we trained—my new abilities tested against her Eastern techniques. Afternoons, we rested—tangled together, speaking of futures we never allowed ourselves to imagine. Nights, we loved—slow and desperate and real.
For the first time in years, I let myself believe we could have this. Peace. Happiness. Each other.
Then the Curator appeared. Urgent.
"The Network moves. They've found Earth."
I was on my feet instantly, Mei Lian beside me, dressed and ready before conscious thought.
"Sarah?"
"Alive. For now. But they're coming for her. For the machine remnants. For everything."
Mei Lian grabbed my hand. "We go now."
I opened my senses. Dimensional Sight showed me Earth—the familiar blue marble, but now with dark specks converging. Network immortals. At least six.
I looked at my team. All of them already gathering, already armed, already ready.
"Earth. Now. Full team."
Darius cracked his neck. "Finally."
Mira checked her healing supplies. Theo stood tall despite fear. Lyra had maps ready. Vera's eyes burned with old fire.
I opened the door.
---
Earth – Sarah's Lab
We emerged in chaos.
Sarah's building was on fire. Creatures swarmed the streets—corrupted, guardians, things I'd never seen. Humans screamed and ran. The Network had brought war to my old world.
"Sarah!" I ran inside.
She was barricaded in her lab, laptop in one hand, a makeshift weapon in the other. When she saw me, she almost collapsed.
"Ren! They came—six of them—immortals—they want the data—"
"Where are they?"
"Spreading out. Hunting. They said they'd destroy everything if you didn't face them."
Classic Network. Use innocents as leverage.
I turned to my team.
"Lyra, get Sarah somewhere safe. Mira, go with them—she might need healing."
"What about you?"
I looked at Mei Lian. At Darius. At Theo and Vera.
"We hunt."
---
The First Immortal
We found him in a park. Standing over bodies. Humans who'd tried to flee.
Darius saw red.
"MINE."
He charged before I could stop him. Fire and fury and years of rage.
The immortal met him calmly. Too calmly.
They clashed. Darius was strong—Level 48, battle-hardened, relentless. But this immortal had centuries. He dodged, countered, wore Darius down.
I moved to help.
Mei Lian grabbed my arm. "Wait. Watch."
Darius took a hit. Recovered. Took another. Kept fighting.
Then he did something unexpected—he feinted. Pretended weakness, let the immortal lean in, then exploded with everything.
The immortal screamed.
Darius stood over him, breathing hard. "Not so tough now, are you?"
One down. Five to go.
---
The Second
Vera found her in an office building. The immortal who'd corrupted her. The one who'd made her into a monster.
Vera froze.
The immortal smiled. "Hello, pet. Come to serve again?"
I started forward. Vera stopped me.
"Mine."
She walked toward her tormentor. Alone.
What followed was brutal. Personal. Vera took hits that should have killed her. Gave hits that should have ended it. Neither would fall.
Then Vera did something desperate—she merged with the immortal. Briefly. Painfully. Long enough to drain her power.
When she pulled back, the immortal crumbled.
Vera collapsed.
Mira ran to her. Healed. Stabilized.
"She'll live. But she needs rest."
Two down. Four to go.
---
The Third and Fourth
Theo found them together. Twins. Ancient. Deadly.
He should have waited for backup.
But Theo had been the scared one too long. The one who needed protection. The one who hesitated.
This time, he didn't hesitate.
They didn't expect it. A boy they'd dismissed attacking alone? Suicide.
Theo used that. Speed. Surprise. Desperation.
He killed one before the other could react.
Then the second killed him.
---
I felt it through the bond—Mei Lian's scream of anguish before I heard it.
We ran.
Found Theo on the ground. The twin immortal standing over him, victorious.
Mira was already there, healing, pouring everything into him.
"Stay with me, Theo, stay with me, please—"
I killed the immortal. Fast. Clean. No satisfaction.
Then I knelt beside Theo.
His eyes fluttered open. Saw me. Smiled.
"Did I... did I do good, Captain?"
"You did good." My voice broke. "You did so good."
"Good." He coughed. Blood. Too much blood. "Tell Mira... tell her I... I wasn't scared. At the end. I wasn't—"
He stopped.
Mira screamed.
I held him. Let myself break.

The Fifth and Sixth
I don't remember killing them.
I remember rage. Pain. The bond screaming through me, Mei Lian's grief mixing with mine. I remember Darius roaring. Mira fighting with tears streaming. Vera dragging herself back into battle.
I remember the immortals falling.
I remember standing over their bodies, covered in blood that wasn't mine, feeling nothing but empty.
---
Aftermath
The sun rose over a broken city.
Sarah's lab was gone. Buildings burned. People mourned.
We gathered in what remained of the park. Theo's body wrapped carefully, Mira refusing to let go.
Darius stood apart. Staring at nothing.
Vera sat alone, processing survival.
Lyra coordinated rescue efforts, numb, automatic.
Mei Lian held me. Said nothing. Just held.
Mira finally approached. Her eyes were red. Her voice was steady—too steady.
"I couldn't save him."
"Mira—"
"I'm a healer. That's what I do. That's all I do. And I couldn't save him." She looked at me. "What's the point of me if I can't save anyone?"
I had no answer.
She walked away.

That Night – Mei Lian
We found a quiet corner. Ruined building. Broken furniture. Not romantic. Just... private.
Mei Lian held me as I finally broke.
Theo's face. His smile. His last words.
"I wasn't scared."
I cried. She held. The bond carried my grief to her, and she carried it without flinching.
When I had nothing left, she spoke.
"He died brave. Because of you."
"Because of me he was there at all."
"Because of you he became someone. Remember who he was when we met? Scared. Unsure. Hiding." She cupped my face. "You gave him courage. You gave him purpose. You gave him a family."
I stared at her.
"He chose to fight those immortals. Chose to protect us. Chose to be brave." She kissed my forehead. "That was him. But you helped him find it."
I pulled her close. Held on.
We didn't make love that night. We just held each other. Grieving. Breathing. Surviving.
Sometimes that's enough.
