Chapter 11 - THE PROTAGONIST'S PRICE

Lin Feng returned at dawn.

He walked into the warehouse like he owned it, which meant Madame Lian had treated him well. His robes were new, his cultivation felt stronger, and his eyes held the particular confidence of someone who had spent five days being courted rather than imprisoned.

"Merchant," he said, nodding to me. "Your competitor has excellent taste in food."

"Madame Lian is now partner, not competitor." I gestured to the chair across from my desk. "We have much to discuss."

He sat, accepting the tea Xiao Hong placed before him. "She explained. The test, the negotiation, the partnership. She was very thorough."

"You are not angry?"

"Should I be? I spent five days in luxury, advanced my cultivation to Foundation Establishment level seven, and learned that two powerful merchants now compete for my attention." He smiled, and there was something new in it. Something calculating. "In your world, that is called appreciation of assets, is it not?"

I studied him. The naive village boy from the original novel was gone. In his place sat someone who understood his own value.

"Level seven is impressive. The original timeline had you at level five by this point."

"The original timeline had me fighting alone. I have merchants investing in my success." He set down his tea. "Madame Lian offered me contract. Exclusive healing services, priority access to her Fate Tokens, and twenty percent of her southern profits in exchange for promoting her brand during my travels."

"And what did you tell her?"

"That I would consider it after discussing with you. We have partnership, Chen Wei. I honor my agreements." He leaned forward. "But agreements can be renegotiated. Terms can be improved. I am no longer the desperate boy who sold you a Fate Token for one copper coin."

I felt something unfamiliar. Respect, yes. But also the first stirrings of what might become concern.

"What do you want?"

"Information. Resources. Protection." He counted on his fingers. "I want access to your intelligence network for my personal missions. I want priority healing from Doctor Chen without waiting lists. I want your assurance that if the Heaven's Secret Pavilion comes for me, you will use your Narrative Weaponization to protect my existence."

"That is expensive."

"Everything has price. You taught me that." He met my eyes. "I am your reference client. Your proof of concept. If I die or fail, your business model loses credibility. Protecting me is not charity. It is investment protection."

I laughed. It surprised me, the sound of genuine amusement.

"You have learned well, Lin Feng."

"I had excellent teachers." He smiled, but his eyes remained serious. "The mission you sent me on. Intelligence gathering about the Endless Sky Sect. I completed it. The information is valuable. But I am keeping it until we reach new agreement."

"Negotiating with your own data. Impressive."

"The data is mine. I collected it. I risked my life for it." He spread his hands. "I am not betraying you, Chen Wei. I am simply recognizing that our relationship has evolved. You are no longer my only option. That gives me leverage. I am using it."

I considered. The Endless Sky Sect was the rising power in the region, the one your outline identified as Chen Wei's greatest future enemy. Information about them was worth significant investment.

"New terms," I said. "You receive priority access to all Merchant of Fates services. Intelligence, healing, Fate Tokens at fifteen percent discount. In exchange, you provide first refusal on all information you gather during your travels. If another party offers better price, you may sell to them only after giving us opportunity to match."

"And protection? Against the Pavilion?"

"If the Pavilion targets you, I will use Narrative Weaponization. But understand the cost. Each use makes me more character, less merchant. There may come a point where I cannot help without destroying myself."

Lin Feng nodded slowly. "Then I will try not to need help."

"Good. Now give me the Endless Sky information."

He reached into his robes and produced a stack of notes. Handwritten, detailed, clearly the work of someone who had learned to observe systematically.

"The Endless Sky Sect is building something. Not techniques. Not weapons. Infrastructure. They are purchasing land along major trade routes. Establishing way stations. Hiring cultivators specifically for their speed rather than combat ability."

I scanned his notes, seeing pattern emerge. Transportation. Logistics. The foundation of a network that could move goods faster than any existing system.

"They are planning to compete with us."

"With everyone. They are building the infrastructure to control continental trade. If they succeed, your branches become irrelevant. Why visit your auction house when they can deliver goods directly to any location within days?"

I looked up sharply. This was worse than competition. This was obsolescence.

"How far along are they?"

"Six months from operational. Maybe less. They have secured agreements with three major trading houses already. The Wang Consortium is negotiating with them."

The Wang Consortium. Who had just frozen our credit at Madame Lian's request. Who were now positioning themselves with our future competitor.

"Xiao Hong," I called. "Bring me everything we have on Endless Sky Sect. Current leadership. Financial backers. Known weaknesses."

She moved immediately. Lin Feng watched, something like satisfaction in his eyes.

"This information is worth the new terms," I said.

"I know." He stood. "I have other missions to complete. Doctor Chen's healing will be needed when I return. I am pushing into dangerous territory."

"Where?"

"Eastern Wastes again. The tomb had secondary chambers we have not explored. If the Prince left more inheritance, I want it before other reincarnators find it."

I nodded. "Take communication crystal. Check in every three days."

"Always the merchant. Monitoring your investment." He smiled and left, confidence in every step.

Xiao Hong returned with files. "The Endless Sky threat is real?"

"Worse than real. They are building what we are building, but faster and with more capital." I spread the documents across my desk. "Young Star leads them. Same age as Lin Feng. Same cultivation talent. Same protagonist potential."

"Another chosen one?"

"Too many chosen ones in this world now. The narrative cannot support them all." I stared at the files, seeing pattern I should have noticed earlier. "Lin Feng's accelerated timeline. Doctor Chen's arrival. Madame Lian's emergence. The Endless Sky expansion. The narrative is fracturing. Too many variables, too many readers, too many people trying to write their own stories."

"What does that mean for us?"

"It means the original novel is dead. We are writing new one, collectively, with no guarantee of happy ending." I looked up at her. "But it also means opportunity. In chaos, those who adapt fastest win. We have network. We have resources. We have information others lack."

"And the Endless Sky Sect?"

"We do not fight them. We infiltrate them. We invest in them. We make ourselves essential to their success, then gradually redirect their resources to our benefit." I pulled out a blank contract sheet. "Young Star wants to control continental trade? Fine. Let him build the infrastructure. We will own the goods moving through it."

Xiao Hong's eyes widened. "You want to partner with our enemy?"

"I want to partner with everyone. That is the merchant's way. The Endless Sky Sect is not enemy. They are customer who has not purchased from us yet." I began drafting. "Prepare delegation. We are visiting their headquarters. Bringing samples of our best products. Offering terms they cannot refuse."

"And if they refuse?"

"Then they become enemy. But only after we have exhausted commercial options." I signed the draft with my merchant seal. "Lin Feng gave us warning. We have six months to position ourselves. In six months, the Endless Sky Sect will either be our partner or our problem. I intend to make sure they are partner."

Xiao Hong took the draft, but hesitated. "Young Master, Madame Lian's partnership is hours old. The Wang Consortium freeze is barely resolved. Lin Feng just renegotiated his terms. Are we not moving too fast?"

I considered her question. It was valid. Expansion created vulnerability. New partners required integration. Threats multiplied faster than defenses.

But speed was also advantage. In a fracturing narrative, those who hesitated became background characters. Those who acted became protagonists.

"We are moving exactly as fast as we must," I said. "The market for fate is finite. Every day we delay, someone else claims territory we could have taken. I will not be the merchant who looked at opportunity and saw only risk."

She nodded, accepting. "I will prepare the delegation."

"And Xiao Hong?"

"Yes?"

"When this is over, when the network spans continent and the narrative stabilizes, there will be position for you. Not branch manager. Partner. Equal share in everything we have built."

She stared at me, surprise breaking through her professional mask. "Young Master, I am just a maid."

"You are the person who kept this operation running while I expanded. Who managed crisis without flinching. Who grew from frightened girl to competent executive." I met her eyes. "I do not give partnership lightly. You earned it."

For a moment, she said nothing. Then, quietly, "Thank you, Young Master."

"Thank me by helping me survive the next six months." I turned back to the Endless Sky files. "Now, tell me everything we know about Young Star's personal habits. His weaknesses. His desires. Everyone has price. We just need to find his."

She moved to my side, and together we began the work of turning enemy into customer.

Outside, Azure Cloud City woke to another day of commerce and cultivation. Unaware that its future was being rewritten by a former maid, a reincarnated merchant, and a protagonist learning to price his own value.

The narrative was fracturing.

But from fracture came opportunity.

And the Merchant of Fates intended to seize every piece.
