Chapter 15 - THE FATE TOKEN'S PRICE

Widow Zhao returned to the warehouse three days after the auction.

She moved slowly, leaning on a cane, her simple robes clean but worn. Xiao Hong escorted her to my office, then left us alone.

"Merchant Chen," she said, settling into the chair with visible relief. "You gave me equity. I have nothing to offer in return. That troubles me."

"You offered something rare. Honesty." I set down my brush. "What brings you here?"

She reached into her robes and produced a small box. Wooden, unadorned, old. "My husband left this before he died. He said it was our family's only treasure. I have kept it thirty years without understanding why."

She placed the box on my desk. "Open it."

I did.

Inside lay a jade pendant. Not like my Fate Tokens. Older. Different. The jade was almost black, carved with symbols I did not recognize. But the energy emanating from it was unmistakable.

Narrative weight. Concentrated. Ancient.

"What is this?"

"I hoped you would tell me." Widow Zhao watched me with calm eyes. "My husband found it in Eastern Wastes, years before we married. He said it spoke to him. Told him things he should not know. He used it to build our trading business, to protect our sons, to survive dangers that should have killed him."

"And then?"

"Then it went silent. Twenty years ago. He kept it, carried it, but it never spoke again." She smiled sadly. "He died believing he had failed whatever test it represented. I kept it believing someone would eventually understand."

I studied the pendant through my System interface.

[ANOMALY DETECTED: PRIME FATE TOKEN]

[Origin: Unknown. Estimated age: 3,000+ years]

[Status: DORMANT]

[Function: Original template for all Fate Tokens]

[Warning: Contains narrative weight equivalent to 1,000 standard tokens]

[Warning: Activation requires host with GOLD RANK or higher]

My heart, which I had thought immune to surprise, began beating faster.

"Do you know what this is?" I asked.

"I know it is why you gave me equity. Not consciously. But something in you recognized something in it." She leaned forward. "Tell me truth, Merchant. What did I bring you?"

"A weapon. A tool. Possibly the most valuable object in this continent." I met her eyes. "This is original Fate Token. The first one ever made. All others are copies."

She absorbed this quietly. Then she nodded.

"And now it is yours."

I blinked. "Mine?"

"I give it to you. Not sold. Not traded. Gift." She smiled, and there was peace in her expression. "I am old, Chen Wei. I will die soon. My sons are dead. My husband is dead. This pendant has been burden, not blessing, for twenty years. You are building something that matters. Perhaps it will matter more in your hands."

"Widow Zhao, this is worth millions of spirit stones. You could live like queen for rest of your life."

"And do what? Sit in luxury waiting to die?" She shook her head. "No. I want to be part of something. You gave me that at auction. Now I give you this. Transaction complete."

I stared at her. At the pendant. At the weight of gift I had not earned.

"This changes things," I said slowly. "Your equity. One percent. It now represents ownership in network that holds this."

"Then I am even more part of something." She stood, using cane to steady herself. "Use it well, Merchant. And if it speaks to you as it spoke to my husband, listen. It knows things we do not."

She left before I could respond.

I sat alone with the pendant, feeling its dormant power, understanding that my network had just acquired asset I could not fully comprehend.

Xiao Hong entered cautiously. "Young Master? Is everything well?"

"No. Yes. I do not know." I held up the pendant. "Widow Zhao gave us this. It is original Fate Token. Template for all others."

Her eyes widened. "That is..."

"Game changing. If we can activate it." I set it down carefully. "But activation requires Gold Rank. I am Gold Rank. But Gold Rank progress is at eighteen thousand of fifty thousand. I am not ready."

"Then we accelerate."

"Exactly." I stood, feeling purpose return. "Summon everyone. Madame Lian. Doctor Chen. Wang Mei. Wang Chen. Lin Feng if he is available. We need to discuss what this means."

They gathered within hour.

I displayed the pendant, explained its origin, described its potential.

Silence followed.

Then Madame Lian spoke. "If this is original template, it contains narrative weight equivalent to one thousand standard tokens. That is enough to rewrite major events. To protect against Pavilion correction. To..."

"To survive final correction," I finished. "Three years from now. This could be our insurance."

"Or our destruction," Doctor Chen added. "If it is dormant for twenty years, activation might be dangerous. Might attract attention we do not want."

"Everything we do attracts attention. The question is whether we control it or it controls us." I looked at each of them. "I will not activate it yet. Not until I understand more. Not until Gold Rank progress is complete. But knowing it exists changes our calculations."

Wang Chen nodded slowly. "Endless Sky. They are hostile but cautious. If they learned we have this, they would become desperate."

"Then they do not learn." I returned pendant to its box. "This stays in my vault. Access limited to those in this room. Understood?"

They nodded.

Lin Feng, who had been silent, spoke. "The old woman. Widow Zhao. She gave this freely?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

I considered the question. The old Alex Chen would have said sentiment. Weakness. Poor judgment.

The new Chen Wei understood differently.

"She wanted to matter. To be part of something beyond herself. We gave her that at auction. She repaid us with everything she had." I looked at my partners. "That is not transaction. That is something else. Something we should remember."

Lin Feng smiled. "You are learning, Merchant."

"I am adapting." I stood. "Now we have work. Endless Sky will not wait. The Pavilion will not wait. The final correction will not wait. We use every advantage, including this one, when time is right."

They dispersed to their duties.

I sat alone with the pendant, feeling its weight, wondering what voices it carried, what secrets it held.

Twenty years silent.

Waiting for someone who could hear.

Perhaps that someone was me.

Perhaps not.

Either way, the Merchant of Fates had just acquired asset beyond price.

And the game, already complex, became infinitely more interesting.

[TRANSACTION COMPLETED: PRIME FATE TOKEN ACQUIRED]

[Asset Value: Priceless]

[Activation Requirement: Gold Rank 50,000/50,000]

[Current Progress: 18,000/50,000]

[Warning: Activation will attract ATTENTION]

[NEW QUEST: GOLD RANK COMPLETION]

[Objective: Reach 50,000 reputation]

[Reward: Prime Token Activation]

[Time Estimate: 6-12 months]

I read the notifications and felt something I had not expected.

Gratitude.

To a dying woman who gave me everything.

To partners who trusted me.

To a world that kept surprising me.

The merchant was learning.

And that, perhaps, was most valuable transaction of all.
