Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 – The Direction of the Call

The pull did not fade.

If anything—

It grew stronger.

Aria stood at the center of the silver space, her chest rising and falling unevenly as the invisible force tugged at the threads within her. It wasn't painful.

It was… persistent.

Like something waiting.

Watching.

Calling her closer.

"The north," she repeated softly.

The word seemed to echo differently now.

Heavier.

Darius didn't take his eyes off her. "You're certain?"

"Yes."

No hesitation this time.

Kaelen's expression had gone still again—that dangerous, thinking stillness.

Lucian folded his arms, gaze dark. "We do not move based on a sensation we do not understand."

Riven exhaled slowly. "We also don't ignore it if it's tied to the bond."

"That is exactly why we should be cautious," Lucian countered.

The tension shifted.

Not outward.

Inward.

Aria felt it immediately—like the threads themselves were reacting to the disagreement.

Subtle.

But real.

Darius stepped forward slightly. "Enough."

Silence followed.

His gaze moved between them before settling back on Aria.

"You said it's not forcing," he said. "Explain."

Aria swallowed, trying to put the feeling into words.

"It's not like Varik," she said. "He pushes. He invades."

Her hand lifted slightly, fingers brushing her chest.

"This… waits."

Riven tilted his head. "That's somehow worse."

Kaelen finally spoke.

"Not necessarily."

All eyes shifted to him.

"If it is what I think it is," he continued, "then it is not a threat in the same way Varik is."

Lucian's gaze sharpened. "You're making assumptions."

"I'm making connections," Kaelen replied calmly.

Darius's voice dropped slightly. "Then say it clearly."

A pause.

Then—

Kaelen did.

"There may be another point of convergence."

Aria frowned. "Meaning?"

Kaelen's golden eyes met hers.

"Something… like you."

The silver space seemed to still.

Riven blinked once. "Okay. I definitely don't like that."

Lucian didn't look surprised.

Which was worse.

"You've seen records," Lucian said quietly.

"Yes."

"And you chose not to mention them?"

"They were incomplete," Kaelen replied. "And irrelevant—until now."

Aria's pulse quickened.

"Another Nexus?" she asked again.

Kaelen didn't confirm it directly.

But he didn't deny it either.

"That would explain the pull," he said instead.

Darius's expression hardened. "Or it could be a trap."

"Yes," Lucian agreed. "One designed specifically for her."

Riven let out a breath. "Honestly? Both can be true."

That didn't help.

Aria closed her eyes briefly.

The pull responded instantly.

Stronger now.

Clearer.

It wasn't just calling—

It was reacting to her attention.

Her eyes snapped open.

"It's aware," she said.

That changed everything.

Kaelen stepped closer immediately. "Describe that."

"It feels…" she hesitated.

Then said it anyway.

"…alive."

Silence followed.

Darius's jaw tightened.

Lucian's gaze darkened further.

Riven muttered, "Yeah, that's not concerning at all."

Kaelen's expression sharpened, interest cutting through his usual restraint.

"If it is aware," he said slowly, "then it is not a passive phenomenon."

"Meaning?" Aria pressed.

"It is either a person," he said, "or something that has learned to act like one."

A chill ran down her spine.

Darius stepped closer to her now, his presence firm. Grounding.

"You are not going alone," he said.

"I didn't say I was," she replied—but her voice carried something else.

Determination.

He noticed.

Of course he did.

"You're thinking about it," he said.

"Yes."

The honesty hung between them.

Lucian moved slightly. "We cannot leave the territory exposed. Not after the attack."

Riven nodded. "And definitely not if Varik decides to show up in person."

Kaelen's gaze flicked between all of them. Calculating. Weighing.

"There is a window," he said.

Darius looked at him sharply. "Explain."

"If Varik is adapting his strategy," Kaelen said, "then he will not strike immediately. He will observe first."

Lucian nodded slowly. "Which gives us time."

"Limited time," Riven added.

Aria stepped forward slightly.

"Then we use it."

All four of them looked at her again.

She didn't back down this time.

"If something is calling me," she said, "and it's connected to this—" her hand pressed lightly against her chest, where the threads pulsed faintly—

"—then ignoring it won't make it go away."

Darius's gaze held hers.

"And if it's a trap?"

"Then we walk into it prepared."

The answer came too quickly. Too easily.

Riven smirked faintly. "I like this version of you."

Lucian didn't smile.

"You are not expendable," he said.

Aria's expression hardened slightly.

"I know," she replied. "That's exactly why I need to understand what I am."

That hit differently.

Darius exhaled slowly.

Kaelen watched her like he was seeing something shift in real time.

"She's right," he said quietly.

Lucian's gaze flicked to him.

"You agree?"

"I agree," Kaelen said, "that ignorance is more dangerous now."

Silence settled again.

Heavier.

More final.

Darius looked between them all—measuring risk, weighing outcomes.

Then his gaze returned to Aria.

"You do not leave the territory," he said.

Her heart dropped slightly—

Until he continued.

"Without us."

Riven huffed a quiet laugh. "There it is."

Lucian nodded once.

"Then we prepare properly."

Kaelen added, "And we move carefully."

Aria exhaled slowly.

Relief.

And something sharper.

Anticipation.

The pull flared again—stronger than before.

As if it had heard.

As if it knew.

Her gaze drifted north instinctively.

Far beyond the mountains.

Beyond Moon territory.

Beyond safety.

Something was waiting.

Not hunting.

Not hiding.

Waiting.

And for the first time—

Aria realized something that made her pulse quicken.

It wasn't just calling her.

It was expecting her.
