The silver space did not disappear immediately.
It held.
But something about it had changed.
The stillness that followed Varik's departure was not peaceful.
It was strained.
Like glass that had been cracked but not yet shattered.
Aria stood at the center, her breathing uneven, her chest still aching from the force she had used to push him out. The threads stretched from her body, still glowing—but no longer stable.
They flickered.
Uneven.
Disturbed.
"He touched them," she said quietly.
No one answered immediately.
They all felt it.
Darius stepped closer, his presence grounding, but even that felt… different now. Less steady.
Not weaker.
Disrupted.
Kaelen moved to her other side, eyes sharp, already analyzing the damage. "Not just touched," he said. "He tested their limits."
Riven let out a slow breath, dragging a hand through his hair. "And now he knows where to push."
Lucian remained still, his gaze fixed upward where the fracture had sealed.
"He will not repeat the same approach," he said. "Next time, he will not come as a presence."
Aria's stomach tightened.
"He'll come physically," she said.
"Yes."
The word settled heavily.
The threads pulsed again—
Harder this time.
Aria gasped softly, her hand flying to her chest.
Pain flared—sharp, sudden.
Not overwhelming.
But wrong.
Darius caught her arm instantly. "What is it?"
"It's the bond," she said through clenched teeth. "It feels…"
She struggled to find the word.
"…strained."
Kaelen's expression darkened slightly. "That is expected."
Riven frowned. "Expected?"
"You forced a direct resistance against an external alpha," Kaelen said calmly. "Through an unstable bond."
Riven blinked. "When you say it like that, it sounds like a terrible idea."
"It was necessary," Lucian said quietly.
Aria swallowed, trying to steady herself.
"But what does that mean?" she asked.
Kaelen didn't soften the truth.
"It means the bond is no longer untouched."
Silence fell.
Darius's jaw tightened. "Explain."
Kaelen's gaze shifted briefly to Aria before returning to the threads.
"Before now, the connection between you and her was forming. Reactive. Growing."
His voice lowered slightly.
"Now it has been exposed… and challenged."
Riven crossed his arms. "And?"
"And," Kaelen continued, "Varik now has a sense of its structure."
The weight of that landed heavily.
Aria's pulse quickened.
"You're saying he can…"
"Not control it," Kaelen interrupted.
"But influence it."
A cold chill ran down her spine.
Lucian finally looked at her.
"If your control falters," he said, "he will feel it."
"And if he feels it…" Riven added quietly.
"He will exploit it," Darius finished.
The threads flickered again.
This time, all four reacted.
Darius stiffened slightly.
Riven's expression tightened.
Lucian's eyes darkened.
Kaelen went completely still.
Aria felt it clearly now.
The connection wasn't just hers.
What affected her—
Affected all of them.
"I didn't realize…" she whispered.
Darius's voice softened, just slightly. "You weren't meant to face that yet."
"But I did," she said.
And something in her tone shifted.
Less uncertainty.
More acceptance.
Kaelen watched her carefully.
"Yes," he said. "And you survived it."
Riven huffed lightly. "Survived? She pushed him out."
Lucian's gaze sharpened. "For now."
The reminder settled like a shadow.
Aria lifted her head slightly, forcing her breathing to steady.
"Then we don't wait for him," she said.
All four of them looked at her.
"We prepare," she continued. "Properly."
Darius studied her expression. "You think this is preparation?"
"No," she said.
"This was a warning."
The silver space seemed to hum faintly around her, reacting to her words.
Kaelen's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Go on."
Aria stepped forward, even as the threads pulsed uneasily around her.
"He didn't try to break the bond," she said slowly.
"He tested it."
Lucian nodded once. "Correct."
Riven tilted his head. "So he's still gathering information."
"Yes," Kaelen said.
Darius's gaze hardened. "Which means he's planning something bigger."
Silence fell again.
Heavier this time.
Aria looked at the threads stretching from her chest.
Four connections.
Four strengths.
Four risks.
"I need to strengthen this," she said quietly.
Kaelen didn't hesitate. "Yes."
Riven smirked faintly. "Now that sounds like a training problem."
Lucian added, "Not just physical."
Darius stepped closer, his voice low.
"Control. Stability. Endurance."
Aria nodded slowly.
Then the threads pulsed again—
Different this time.
Not pain.
Not disruption.
A pull.
Her breath caught.
"Do you feel that?" she whispered.
Kaelen's head tilted slightly.
"Yes."
Lucian's expression darkened.
Riven straightened. "Okay… that's new again."
Darius's grip on her arm tightened slightly.
The pull came again.
Stronger.
From a distance.
From outside.
Not Varik.
Something else.
Or—
Someone else.
Aria's heart began to race.
"It's calling," she said.
The words left her before she could stop them.
The silver space trembled faintly.
Kaelen's eyes sharpened instantly.
"Calling?"
She nodded slowly, her gaze distant.
"It's not the same as before," she said. "It's not forcing its way in…"
Her voice dropped.
"It's trying to reach me."
Silence.
Lucian spoke first.
"That is not possible."
But even as he said it—
He didn't sound certain.
Riven frowned. "Please don't tell me there's another one."
Darius's voice was low, dangerous.
"Where?"
Aria closed her eyes briefly, focusing.
The pull sharpened.
Clearer now.
Directional.
Her eyes snapped open.
"The north," she said.
Kaelen's expression shifted—just slightly.
Recognition.
Lucian noticed immediately.
"You know something."
Kaelen didn't respond right away.
That alone was answer enough.
Riven let out a breath. "I don't like that look."
Darius's gaze locked onto Kaelen.
"Say it."
A brief pause.
Then—
Kaelen spoke.
"There are… records," he said slowly.
"Of what?" Aria asked.
His golden eyes met hers.
"Of another anomaly."
The word echoed.
Cold.
Uncertain.
Dangerous.
Aria's pulse quickened.
"Another Nexus?"
Kaelen didn't answer immediately.
Which was worse than saying yes.
The threads pulsed again—
That pull stronger now.
Alive.
Waiting.
Whatever was in the north…
It wasn't just calling her.
It was responding.
