Chapter 122 - Chapter 122

Summoned by shadow clones, Inoichi, Ino, Sakura, and Shizune made their way into the supposedly empty Uchiha district.

Inoichi, Ino, and Shizune were completely paralyzed with shock the moment they stepped into the clearing of the Uchiha ceremonial grounds. Walking around, coughing, and crying right in front of them were dozens of Uchiha who should have been dead for years.

Sakura was stunned as well, but because she had been let in on far more of her sensei's secrets, her shock was brief. She quickly recovered her composure, her eyes shifting immediately into diagnostic mode as she took in the scene.

"You're here, good. The young Uchiha need a medical checkup and mind healing. Each of them will undergo sessions after today, but it's important to assess the damage to each of their minds. Those who can be present during my announcement later will be up on top of the Hokage Tower with me, and those who have severely damaged minds will be excused for fear that their conditions would be worsened."

Kakashi explained to the four of them, Sakura being the first to process everything and step forward to check the newborn babies, followed shortly by Shizune. Inoichi and Ino separated and gathered groups of young teens and toddlers, respectively.

Kakashi felt some degree of relief as the younger Uchiha members seemed to have enough of themselves left to blush while following Ino under a tree to talk.

Kakashi nodded as he looked over at Inoichi, who was guiding his group of young teens toward a large tree on the opposite side of the grounds. His approach was warm and paternal. He listened patiently as the teenagers spoke to him in turn, quickly identifying the complex emotional weight each one carried.

By gathering the groups together without forcing anyone to speak, Inoichi created a safe space where no one felt pressured. It was a highly effective approach. Once one teen was brave enough to open up and break the ice, the rest felt secure enough to follow that example and share their own thoughts.

Kakashi shifted his gaze over to Sakura and Sasuke, trying and failing to keep a smirk off his face. Sasuke looked exactly like Sakura's assistant as she confidently ordered him around. She went down the line, physically adjusting how his clones cradled the babies. The moment one clone was unluckily scolded, the remaining copies quickly corrected their own holds.

"She reminds me of Kushina," Mikoto chuckled behind her hand as she thought of her best friend. Having witnessed some of Kakashi's memories of the pink-haired girl, seeing her in person let her experience it firsthand.

"They have the same presence about them."

Fugaku agreed, face sour as he recalled how the few times he had talked to Kushina always ended in her teasing and making fun of him mercilessly. Seeing the expressions on his son's clones, Fugaku felt he could relate to them.

'Good luck, son.'

That being said, Fugaku wasn't going to step in and help; he wasn't a fool.

"While they're busy, would you two like to take a walk with me?"

Kakashi asked, already walking, leaving it up to them whether they wanted to join him.

Fugaku and Mikoto exchanged a brief look before stepping out to follow him. The three of them walked down the path together, leaving the busy ceremonial grounds behind as they headed into a quieter section of the compound.

"You've changed the village," Fugaku observed quietly, his eyes scanning the well-maintained perimeter walls. "Even from the memories you shared, seeing the sheer lack of tension in the air... It's not the Konoha I remember."

"Because it was built on paranoia and bad actors," Kakashi replied, keeping his eyes forward as he walked with his hands in his pockets. "If you treat a clan like an enemy long enough, they'll eventually become one. My goal isn't just to keep the peace; it's to make sure the village behaves like a proper home. For everyone."

"A proper home," Fugaku repeated quietly, the words tasting foreign on his tongue. He gave a single, firm nod. "If you can actually deliver on that, then you have my cooperation. The Uchiha will do our part to maintain it."

Mikoto walked beside them, a soft, relieved smile gracing her features as the heavy tension finally began to drain from her husband's shoulders. "Where are we heading first, Lord Hokage? Directly to the tower?"

"Yes. We'll head up to the office first. Minato-sensei and Kushina are already waiting there. I want you two to settle in before the public announcement begins."

He gave them a look, and they instantly understood, transforming into normal-looking Jonin.

Kakashi turned and led the disguised couple past the perimeter checkpoints of the empty district, stepping out into the neutral zone just beyond the gates. Once clear of the compound boundary, the three of them body-flickered in a collective blur, reappearing a few blocks away in a quiet alleyway just on the edge of the village center.

Stepping out of the shadows, they walked through the crowded streets, Fugaku and Mikoto keeping their eyes moving as they quietly took in the active streets. The heavy, suffocating atmosphere of the Nine-Tails attack and general wariness that had choked the village was entirely gone. People talked openly, merchants called out to customers, and the general public moved about without a trace of wartime anxiety, children playing, wives gathered and gossiping, and many more.

Within minutes, the trio reached the base of the Hokage Tower. They bypassed the security checkpoints without drawing a single second glance, slipping into the private stairwells and heading straight for the top floor. Kakashi reached the heavy wooden door of his personal office, pausing for just a second to look back at the two disguised ninja before pushing it open.

Inside stood the undisguised figures of Minato and Kushina, and Kakashi motioned for Fugaku to close the door.

"Hello, sensei, Kushina. I know today is the day you're revealed, but I have a bit of a surprise."

Kakashi greeted them, absentmindedly sending a message to a hidden ANBU with a few gestures, then felt the operative leave to spread his gathering order.

The two let the transformations go, and Kushina took all of two seconds to register who she was looking at before launching at Mikoto with childlike glee.

Mikoto barely had time to stabilize her footing before Kushina's arms wrapped tightly around her neck, burying her face into her shoulder. The sheer force of the impact forced a soft gasp from the Uchiha matriarch, but the initial shock melted away instantly, replaced by a deep, emotional warmth as she wrapped her own arms around her best friend.

Minato stood by the large desk, his jaw dropping slightly as he stared at Fugaku, who was adjusting his collar after dropping his transformation. The two former leaders locked eyes across the room, the ghosts of their complicated political pasts completely overshadowed by the sheer, impossible reality of the moment.

"Fugaku..." Minato murmured, a small, stunned smile breaking across his face. "I don't even know what to say."

Fugaku looked at the Fourth Hokage, his expression serious but more so curious. "You can start by telling me how you managed to die? Because I don't believe it was just the Nine-Tails."

Mikoto groaned with an exasperated eye-roll, but other than that, she didn't interfere, knowing her husband was a stubborn man, and the death of Minato was what started the real trouble for their clan.

"You're right to doubt it," Minato began to recount everything in a grave tone. "A masked man entirely orchestrated the extraction and control of the Nine-Tails. He managed to bypass our highest-level security barriers, kill the ANBU guard completely undetected, took Kushina right after she gave birth, used my son to send me away, forced the Nine-Tails from Kushina, and then used a contract seal to force the beast under his command before unleashing it onto the village.

During our fight, I managed to land a clean hit and sever his contract seal with the Nine-Tails, which allowed me to catch a brief glimpse behind his mask. I noticed his eye and its pattern. He possessed a Sharingan, though the design was unique- something I'd later learn was the Mangekyo Sharingan, and likely the power of his eye."

"Eye? He only possessed one? So, it could be possible that he lost an eye or… maybe he wasn't an Uchiha at all."

Minato shook his head.

"The man claimed to be Madara Uchiha, and I don't think anyone other than an Uchiha could've used that technique as much as he did."

Fugaku scoffed.

"Madara? That's impossible; he's dead."

He paused after saying it because one point stuck out to him more than anything.

'One eye… could he have used Izanagi back then?'

Fugaku wasn't sure because, according to the text, Izanagi lets one cheat death or severe injury, but it comes with the sacrifice of an eye and a very taxing amount of chakra. Could Madara have really faked his death so well?

"Well, that man is still alive."

Minato answered, retelling the events that happened in the Fire Temple and how the masked man seemed to vanish like mist after being fatally attacked, and his chakra presence vanishing before he reappeared next to his target and ran away with his Time/Space technique.

"Right now, my main body is on a mission to retrieve the boy that the masked man kidnapped."

Minato explained, just a shadow clone talking to them now.

Fugaku frowned.

"So, the Uchiha did cause the Nine-Tails attack then. When everyone claimed that the Nine-Tails was seen with the Sharingan in its eyes, I thought the higher-ups were using the opportunity to spread rumors and alienate the Uchiha. I, like many other Uchiha, thought this, though I tried to calm them; you can only hold back the rushing water that is fate for so long; sooner or later, the dam breaks, and the water destroys all in its path."

Minato listened quietly, his expression softening with a mixture of regret and understanding.

"I don't blame you for thinking that, Fugaku," Minato said, his voice low and steady. "The village elders did exactly what the masked man wanted them to do. By isolating your clan out of fear, they built the very dam you're talking about. The tragedy is that the strike was designed to make us destroy each other from the inside out."

Kakashi walked over from the door, his hands still in his pockets as his posture straightened.

"The dam broke once," he spoke up, drawing all eyes to him. "But trying to build a stronger wall to block the river isn't the answer. If you give a massive current nowhere to go, it's always going to destroy whatever is in its path. Instead of containment, we're rerouting the water. We are clearing a wider, shared channel where that strength can flow safely alongside the rest of the village."

Minato blinked in surprise; the analogy was something he'd have thought would've come from Jiraiya-sensei or a younger Lord Third, but he doesn't speak up as Kakashi opens his mouth again.

"The isolation ends today. The Uchiha will be a part of the village, a proper part this time, not as a guarded ally, or a clan that's shoved to the edge; you'll be given equal opportunity and treatment. Your original clan grounds will be restored, and the Police force will no longer be something the Uchiha will be forced to bear alone."

Kakashi raised a hand before Fugaku could speak up about that, well aware of his pride in the police force.

"I know you both are aware of the conversation I had with Sasuke due to the memories I shared, but what I'm doing is setting this up so that no one can use the mistrust of the villagers to pin it on any individual group. Where there is law, there will always be those who despise those who uphold it. The police force, while an honorable profession, was used maliciously by Danzo to turn the villagers against the Uchiha. And when the Uchiha felt this? They policed with more force, correct? Only furthering the issue and proving the rumors spread among the villagers. If the police force is open to any civilian ninja or clan ninja, can anyone ostracize the whole diverse police force of powerful clans and civilians? Not individually, but the police force will always feel some distrust; it's a thankless job, but my goal is to keep that mistrust from getting as bad as it did before."

"You're making it harder for someone to pick on one individual group."

Mikoto commented from the side, Kushina still clinging to her.

"By doing this, if another tries to spread rumors about one group in the Police force you imagine, it'll be easier to see that it's not an attack on the police force, but only a certain group. Whereas before, only Uchiha were responsible for the police, allowing hidden motives to spread while the villagers did the work of baiting the proud Uchiha."

Kakashi nodded.

"I can see why you're the matriarch," He complimented before looking to Fugaku.

"You're a lucky man."

Fugaku agreed with a nod, knowing that he was very lucky. Mikoto was as smart as she was deadly, and as beautiful as she was motherly.

Kakashi looked over his shoulder at the sound of the gathering villagers outside.

"It would seem that the crowd is gathered."

He hummed before calling out, "Cat, Mouse."

Two female ANBU members appeared silently and knelt.

"I want you two to go to the Uchiha compound, consult with Inoichi and Ino. Only bring those they approve. Bring them to the top of the tower, out of view of the crowd below."

Kakashi took a moment to look at their ANBU attire and the tantos on their backs, knowing how the kids might react to masked figures armed with blades.

"Before you leave, go change into your normal attire, and don't bring any blades other than kunai and shuriken. Dismissed."

Kakashi led the group out of the office. As he stepped through the doors, he reached out, took his Hokage hat from the wooden rack near the office door, and set it firmly on his head before leading the way up the concrete stairs toward the rooftop access.

The heavy metal door clicked open, and the group stepped out into the open air of the elevated roof. Minato, Kushina, Fugaku, and Mikoto all stopped a few paces back from the edge.

They let Kakashi walk forward alone. As his silhouette emerged at the front of the grand roof, the murmur of the thousands of villagers packed into the plaza below died down almost instantly. A sudden silence washed over the village center. The previous gathering had left a deep impression, and now an expectant atmosphere hung over the crowd. Thousands of eyes locked onto the Sixth Hokage, completely silent, waiting for his first words.

"People of Konoha." Kakashi's gaze swept over the crowd below, seeing some of his personal friends and even some civilians whom he had known for years.

"The last time you gathered here, I promised you that Konoha would see many changes. And not long ago, a Builder from the Land of Waves arrived with all of his workers. With their help, Konoha's port is already underway; this will open up trade with other countries by sea."

Kakashi gestured to Tazuna in the crowd, here to represent his group as the rest of his men and Inari worked on the port.

The crowd clapped politely when he paused; some were prepared for what else he was going to say, but surprisingly, the merchants were the most enthusiastic about the trade, completely different from their shrewdness.

Kakashi raised a hand to ease the applause, waiting for the plaza to return to a focused silence.

"Along with this, I'm happy to announce that the land above the Hokage Monument has already been sold; merchants and some of Konoha's own now own the land above, and I expect exciting things to come from this, but as exciting as all this is, I'm sure what I'm about to reveal will surprise you all."

Kakashi paused on purpose, letting the crowd wait for his next words for a moment, just because he could.

"Now, I want your help in welcoming back some people that we lost during the Nine-Tails attack those years ago. People of Konoha, give a big welcome home to Minato Namikaze and his wife, Kushina Uzumaki-Namikaze!"

The crowd stood frozen for a fraction of a second, the names registering in their minds like an impossible riddle. Then, Minato and Kushina stepped out from behind Kakashi and into view.

A collective, deafening gasp rippled across the plaza, a sound so sharp it felt like the entire village had lost its breath at once. Thousands of jaws dropped. Merchants dropped their clipboards, old ninja rubbed their eyes in disbelief, and a stunned silence gripped the center of Konoha. Standing right there at the railing, entirely unchanged by time, was the flash of yellow hair and the vibrant crimson strands of the heroes who had died protecting them over a decade ago.

Minato offered a warm, familiar smile and waved a hand down to the completely paralyzed crowd. Beside him, Kushina gripped the railing, her eyes scanning the sea of upturned faces with a mixture of overwhelming emotion and pride.

Behind them, hidden in the deeper shadows of the roof access structure, the two female ANBU members silently led a small group of quiet, neatly dressed Uchiha teenagers and children gathered close behind them.

The suffocating silence lasted for only another heartbeat before the entire plaza erupted.

Minato's smile widened, a touch of genuine humility crossing his face as he looked out over the sea of cheering citizens. At the same time, Kushina waved enthusiastically, tears finally pricking the corners of her eyes at the overwhelming reception. The massive wave of cheers rolled up the side of the tower, filling the air as the village celebrated the return of their lost heroes.

Kakashi gestured for him to take the stage, stepping to the side, still in view, but letting them have this moment.

Minato stepped forward to the absolute center of the railing, the simple amplification jutsu picking up his steady breath as he took the stage. He waited a few moments, his warm blue eyes scanning the massive plaza as the thunderous cheers slowly began to calm down, the villagers eagerly hushing one another so they wouldn't miss a single word from the returned Fourth Hokage.

"People of Konoha," Minato began, his voice carrying that familiar, gentle confidence that had once addressed them during his time as Hokage. "It has been a long time."

A collective, emotional murmur rippled through the front rows.

"I know you have many questions about that night, and about how Kushina and I are standing before you today," Minato continued, casting a glance back at Kakashi. "Our return is thanks to the new Hokage and my student, Kakashi Hatake. My wife and I wouldn't be here talking to you today if it wasn't for him. I won't keep you long or spoil the other surprise he has in store..."

Minato looked at the expectant, excited, and impatient expressions on their faces.

"I'm sorry, you'll have to wait, but when it is announced, I ask you, as your Fourth Hokage, to control your reactions a little and think before you react."

He said with a bit of seriousness, not wanting the people's excitement to frighten the clearly nervous expression that he had glimpsed on their faces.

The crowd murmured their agreement, the words lost in the jumble, but Minato still understood.

"Good. Thank you for that. Now, before my wife and I step back, I want to say that it's good to see you all again, and I'm excited to walk among you once more and enjoy what Konoha has to offer now and in the future under the leadership of the new Hokage."

Minato and Kushina waved to the crowd as their other hands were intertwined before they walked back under the cheers of the crowd, Kakashi taking the center once more and giving them time to calm down a bit.

Kakashi adjusted his hat slightly, his gaze piercing through the silence.

"The history of our village is a long one of victory and tragedy," Kakashi spoke, his voice echoing. "But I cannot and will never allow old scars to fester in the dark. For too long, a single name has been shrouded in grief, misunderstanding, and isolation. I am aware that some of you may have misgivings about the ones I'm about to introduce, and hear me when I say that your misgivings are based upon lies spread by a dead man full of hate and bitterness. I can't ask you to change your mind, but as your Hokage, I ask you to look at them once more without the prejudice you may have built in your heart over time; only then can we truly move forward. If what I ask is too much, then the only thing I ask of you is not to try to skew anyone else's opinion; let others decide for themselves, let them form their own opinion.

The crowd below looked at the ones around them in confusion, but they ultimately agreed in their own ways, finding that what he asked of them was reasonable.

The only two in the crowd who connected before anyone were two Nara: Shikaku and Shikamaru, the father and son, looking at each other with understanding.

"Lord Hokage!"

Kakashi looked down at the crowd, at the one who shouted, to see a man he had never seen before, spreading his observation Haki and blinking.

'What are you doing, Naruto?'

"Yes?"

"Who is that old man you were talking about?! The bitter one!"

Kakashi tilted his head before realizing what Naruto was doing, though he was a bit surprised that he himself hadn't thought about this before.

'He's giving me a chance to bash Danzo in a natural setting, Kakashi realized, a quiet spark of amusement in his chest. The fact that most civilians don't even know who Danzo is makes it incredibly easy to completely discredit him, along with every anti-Uchiha opinion he ever spread. Genius.'

"His name was Danzo Shimura," his voice rang out, dropping any hint of warmth as his tone turned entirely clinical. "He was an elder of this village who operated entirely in the dark, leading an unauthorized, rogue division of black-ops ninja. And these ninja mostly came from prominent clans that were pressured into handing over their youngest and brightest."

The crowd immediately looked at the clan heads; each clan head nodded in agreement before they once more looked back to Kakashi.

"Danzo Shimura was one of the students of the 2nd Hokage, Tobirama Senju, but unlike our 3rd Hokage, who aligns more with the Will of Fire, Danzo was a man steeped in darkness. He spread lies and collected the bodies of dead clan members of this village, spread rumors about the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, Naruto Namikaze, and he even leaked the mission details of my father, Sakumo Hatake, leading to his suicide. So, when I ask you to let your prejudice go, I mean to separate yourself from the opinions of a man unworthy of spreading his."

Kakashi finished his explanation, then turned and motioned for the people who had been waiting to step forward.

"Now, allow me to welcome back one of the two clans who founded this village: the Uchiha clan."

Fugaku and Mikoto stepped up first, walking into view under the afternoon sun. Fugaku kept his chin up, his gaze scanning the vast plaza with the steady, piercing eyes of a true leader, while Mikoto walked perfectly at his side with an effortless, calm dignity.

Behind them, a small group of approved Uchiha teenagers and children approached, staying just a step behind. It was enough for the crowd to see them clearly, but not so much that they became the center of attention like Fugaku and Mikoto.

The crowd below drew a collective breath as their eyes locked onto the unmistakable Uchiha features.

Nobody moved at first. But on closer look, the old rumors seemed to fade almost immediately in the eyes of many. Instead of coldness and arrogant, dangerous threats, the villagers saw a group of visibly nervous, cute kids fidgeting with their clothes. The silence held for a long, heavy moment before a few people in the front rows began to clap. Within seconds, the movement spread through the plaza, rising into a relaxed, respectful wave of applause that never got too loud.
