Chapter 5 - When the Well Went Dry

"Group Fourteen, Positions One through Five, advance to the Origin Well," the presiding official called.

The first five candidates stepped out of preparation and entered the white causeway. Behind them, another section of the Group Fourteen formation illuminated, and Positions Six through Ten were directed into the preparation enclosure. The transition occurred with the same controlled efficiency that had carried the previous thirteen groups through the ceremony, but Liam Vale felt the difference immediately. For hours, the Origin Well had received strangers. Now it had begun consuming the line in front of him.

The five candidates reached their contact plates and were held in place by the invisible force of the Well. Currents of ancient light separated beneath the water, approached them, and rose through their bodies. Government instruments activated only after the connections formed, and five holograms appeared over the ceremonial ground.

The first completed reading belonged to a thin young man named Deren Holt.

Silver strands emerged from Deren's fingertips and wrapped around his forearms before disappearing. The manifestation earned modest applause, and the officials assigned to his classification passage barely shifted in their seats.

The other four candidates completed their readings without incident. When the Origin Well released them, medical attendants escorted them away, Positions Six through Ten advanced, and Positions Eleven through Fifteen entered preparation.

The rhythm continued.

Five candidates awakened while five more prepared. Every completed set left another gap in Group Fourteen's formation, and every gap brought Position Sixty-Two closer to the front.

Liam watched more than the Blessings. He watched the government.

A candidate in the third set awakened a Blessing called Glass Dominion with five Major Functions and only two Minor Functions beneath a Tide ceiling. The audience reacted to the crystalline blades that formed around her, but Liam focused on the military representatives who stood as soon as her first Major Function appeared.

Another candidate possessed only three Major Functions but five Minor Functions beneath a Flow ceiling. His Blessing produced no spectacle beyond a faint discoloration in the air, yet one unlocked Major Function—Breath Theft—caused additional guards to gather before the Origin Well released him.

The government did not care whether a Blessing was beautiful. It cared whether the person carrying it could be controlled.

As the fifth set left the formation, the woman standing immediately before Liam adjusted the white band around her wrist. Position Sixty-One had spoken to him several times during the long ceremony, although neither had yet offered the other a name.

"You have counted every guard rotation since Group Four began," the woman observed. She kept her voice low and her eyes on the holograms. "Either you are planning to escape, or you find government footwear unusually compelling."

Liam glanced toward the nearest classification passage. "Identifying an exit is not the same as believing it can be reached."

The woman gave a quiet laugh. "That answer was somehow less reassuring than admitting you planned to run."

"I was not attempting to reassure you," Liam replied.

"I noticed," the woman said. "You have a rare talent for making honesty sound like a threat."

Their conversation ended when an attendant ordered the remaining candidates to sit. The sun had descended far enough that the western tiers cast long shadows across the ceremonial field, but the Origin Well retained its impossible color. Light moved beneath its ancient water in slow, deliberate currents, untouched by the passing hours or the hundreds of Awakenings already completed.

In Group Fifteen, Marcus Hale remained at Position Forty-Three. He watched Group Fourteen whenever another set advanced, but he did so without drawing attention. The half-smile he usually wore had nearly disappeared. He adjusted his wristband more than once, despite the fact that it was already secure, and rubbed his thumb across the scar above his left eyebrow whenever Liam's formation moved forward.

Several positions away, Paisley Vale occasionally looked toward the same group. With each completed set, fewer people stood between her and the white-haired candidate. She could now distinguish the way he protected his bandaged hand and the stillness with which he endured the waiting.

The resemblance continued to disturb her, but disturbance was not recognition.

She had spent too many years turning strangers into Liam for a few desperate seconds. She had followed boys through markets because their hair caught the light in the wrong way. She had searched the faces of passengers through vehicle windows and awakened from dreams certain that she had heard her brother call her name.

Hope had become a cycle she knew too well. First came recognition. Then certainty. Then the closer look that destroyed both.

Paisley refused to begin that cycle again.

Group Fourteen's seventh set awakened beneath a burst of blue fire. The eighth set followed. The ninth produced a candidate with a Horizon ceiling and only one unlocked Major Function. His hologram revealed seven Major Functions and five Minor Functions in total, but ten of the twelve entries displayed nothing except numbered question marks.

The crowd cheered for his potential. The candidate stared at the government officials gathering beyond his classification door and did not smile.

By the tenth set, the waiting candidates had grown quiet from exhaustion. By the eleventh, even the spectators' reactions had become more restrained. The ceremony had continued for most of the day, and the Origin Well had accepted every candidate with the same ancient indifference.

Positions Fifty-One through Fifty-Five completed their Awakenings and were removed.

The presiding official raised his hand. "Group Fourteen, Positions Fifty-Six through Sixty, advance to the Origin Well," he called.

Five candidates left preparation.

A second set of markers illuminated.

"Group Fourteen, Positions Sixty-One through Sixty-Five, report to preparation," the presiding official ordered.

The woman in front of Liam rose first. Liam followed her through the marked passage, with Positions Sixty-Three, Sixty-Four, and Sixty-Five behind him. Once the preparation gate closed, no candidates remained between them and the Origin Well.

An official scanned each wristband and verified their identities.

"Mara Venn, Position Sixty-One," the official announced.

The woman gave Liam a brief glance as if acknowledging that her name had finally become public.

"Liam Vale, Position Sixty-Two," the official continued.

The scanner paused over Liam's registration. The official's eyes moved briefly across the Facility Forty-Seven designation before she continued without comment.

"Davin Rell, Position Sixty-Three. Sera Noll, Position Sixty-Four. Toren Cass, Position Sixty-Five."

Once their identities were confirmed, the official faced all five candidates.

"When your positions are called, you will step onto the assigned plates and remain still," she instructed. "Do not reach toward the Origin Well. Do not resist when it restrains your body. Do not interfere with another candidate, and do not attempt to leave until the connection ends."

Mara looked toward the dark water only a short distance away. "Has anyone ever successfully resisted it?" she asked.

"No," the official answered.

Mara's mouth tightened. "Then ordering us not to resist feels unnecessary."

Liam watched the final currents moving around Positions Fifty-Six through Sixty. "Governments enjoy turning impossibility into an instruction," he said. "It gives them someone to blame when the impossible goes wrong."

The preparation official looked sharply toward him, but Mara smiled despite herself.

"I hope whatever appears above me is at least honest," Mara said.

Liam looked across the Well's ancient surface. "It is the only authority here that has not already decided what we are worth."

The connections at the contact plates ended before Mara could answer. Five holograms faded, and medical personnel guided the awakened candidates away.

The presiding official called the thirteenth set.

"Group Fourteen, Positions Sixty-One through Sixty-Five, advance to the Origin Well."

Mara walked first. Liam followed as Position Sixty-Two, with Davin, Sera, and Toren behind him.

The amphitheater felt larger from the causeway. More than one hundred and fifty thousand spectators rose around them, but the sound of the crowd diminished beneath the presence of the Origin Well. Its surface stretched farther than Liam could properly comprehend. Ancient water shifted beneath the evening light, carrying colors that seemed to belong to places beyond the sky.

Marcus saw Liam step onto the causeway and stopped adjusting his wristband. He remained silent, his attention fixed upon his friend.

Paisley saw the white-haired candidate emerge behind Mara. For the first time, no formation obscured him. The distance remained too great for certainty, but something in the way he walked tightened her chest.

She did not call out.

The five candidates reached their plates. The female station official verified their positions one final time.

"Step forward and remain still," the station official instructed.

Liam placed both feet upon Position Sixty-Two.

The Origin Well took hold of him.

The restraint felt unlike metal, rope, or physical pressure. Nothing touched his legs, yet his boots could not lift from the plate. His shoulders remained free, and he could turn his head, but the ground beneath him had become absolute.

Mara tested her footing and looked toward the official. Davin flexed his hands. Sera closed her eyes. Toren stared into the water.

They waited for the currents.

Nothing happened.

The ancient colors continued moving beneath the Origin Well, but none separated from the larger flow. No stream approached the contact plates. No light rose into the candidates. The government instruments remained inactive.

Five seconds passed.

The station official examined her slate. "Remain still," she ordered, although none of them had moved.

Ten seconds passed.

Mara attempted to lift one foot and failed. "It is holding us, but it is not connecting," she said.

"I can see that," the station official replied. She touched the communicator at her collar. "Central platform, Station Fourteen reports physical restraint without connection. No active currents have formed."

Fifteen seconds passed.

The presiding official's voice answered through the station communicator. "Do not interfere. Maintain the candidates' positions."

Davin turned his head toward Liam. "Is this supposed to happen?" he asked.

"No," Liam answered.

At twenty seconds, every current beneath the Origin Well stopped.

The stillness spread across the entire body of water.

Liam stared downward.

Something moved beneath him.

It was not one of the narrow streams that had approached the previous candidates. It was too large. A vast shape passed beneath the surface at a depth Liam could not measure, displacing ancient colors as it moved. Its outline never became clear, but its scale was undeniable. It traveled beyond Liam's station, crossing beneath a portion of the Well wide enough to contain entire sections of the ceremonial field.

Mara saw it next. Her breath caught as the enormous shadow turned beneath the water.

The station official stepped backward.

Across the amphitheater, spectators began rising from their seats. Those with a clear view pointed toward the Well as the movement continued beneath its surface. Officials abandoned their slates. Guards shifted weapons toward something no one could properly see.

Marcus leaned forward, every trace of humor leaving his face.

Paisley watched the shape pass beneath the white-haired candidate and felt fear strike before thought could contain it.

The thing beneath the water slowed.

Then the ancient colors vanished.

Blackness spread from beneath Liam's plate and raced across the Origin Well. It consumed every trace of luminous water until the entire vast expanse became an enormous pool of darkness threaded with deep-purple hues.

The transformed substance behaved like liquid and gas at once. It rolled with the weight of deep water while dark vapor folded through it in heavy waves. Purple light moved inside the blackness like bruises forming beneath skin.

The amphitheater erupted.

Spectators shouted and pushed away from the lower railings. Government officials issued conflicting commands. Guards advanced toward the Well and stopped when the black vapor rose along its boundary.

The station official raised her communicator. "All candidates remain—"

Four violent pulses struck the contact plates.

Mara, Davin, Sera, and Toren were thrown backward. The force lifted them from the stone and hurled them several yards across the ceremonial ground. Medical attendants scattered as the candidates struck the floor.

Liam did not move.

Position Sixty-Two continued holding him upright.

The station official ran toward the fallen candidates. "Get behind me," she ordered as Mara struggled to her knees.

Davin looked toward Liam. "He is still trapped," Davin said.

"Move behind me now," the station official commanded. She stepped between the four candidates and the Origin Well before turning toward the nearest security detail. "Guards, defensive formation. Protect these candidates."

Six guards formed a line in front of them, weapons aimed toward the transformed Well.

No one crossed that line for Liam.

Mara took one step forward, but the station official blocked her path with one arm. "You cannot help him," the official said.

"You do not know that," Mara argued.

"I know the Well rejected you and kept him," the station official replied. "Get back."

Liam stood alone upon the contact plate.

Across the Origin Well, the black gaseous liquid began to move.

It gathered from every direction without lowering the surface. Purple hues were drawn inward, converging toward Liam's station. The vast body of darkness compressed until a single narrow line formed beneath the surface.

The line began advancing.

It moved slowly, no faster than a cautious hand reaching across a table. Its deliberate pace gave every person in the amphitheater time to understand that the entire transformed Origin Well had focused upon one candidate.

"Do not fire," the presiding official ordered through the amphitheater. "No guard will engage the Well."

The black line continued forward.

Liam pulled against the force holding his legs and gained nothing. The station official remained behind the defensive line with the expelled candidates. Guards watched him from the safety of their formation, but none approached.

Marcus gripped his wristband so tightly that the material cut into his skin.

Paisley stared at the trapped candidate, her old unwanted hope twisting together with a terror she could not explain.

The narrow current reached the edge of Liam's plate.

Dark-purple light brightened within it.

The substance rose from the Well in a single suspended stream, flowing against gravity. It curved toward Liam with the controlled precision of something that had already chosen where it intended to go.

Liam felt no heat from it.

He felt recognition.

The current crossed the final distance and touched the center of his chest.

Every remaining light inside the Origin Well went black.
