"Until we understand Divine Ruin," Seraphine told the officials watching from beyond the observation glass, "no one touches him without me in the room."
The declaration quieted the assessment level, but it did not make Liam Vale free.
Two guards remained inside the chamber with their suppression rods lowered. The heavier restraints had been removed from Liam's wrists, yet the monitored security band around his arm maintained a steady pressure against his skin. Suppression mechanisms remained active above him, and the reinforced door had not opened for anyone except Seraphine.
Liam examined the room through eyes filled with layered blackness and shifting dark-purple depth. Fractures crawled across the walls, gathered within the observation glass, and spread through the mechanical joints of the door. Ruined Sight showed him every weakness without teaching him what any of them meant.
"Changing the restraint does not change the room," Liam said.
Seraphine remained across the table from him. "No," she answered. "It changes what they are permitted to do while you are inside it."
"That is supposed to make me feel better?"
"No," Seraphine replied. "It is supposed to be accurate."
Her refusal to disguise his confinement made the answer easier to tolerate, though not easier to accept.
Seraphine placed a thin assessment slate upon the table. "Ruined Sight has remained active since your Awakening. Before anyone performs another examination, I need to determine what the Function is doing to you."
Liam studied the pale fractures running beneath the slate's transparent surface. "Are you going to ask me to activate it?"
"It is already active," Seraphine said. "Forcing an active Function would accomplish nothing except proving that the people running this facility do not understand the meaning of the word active."
One of the guards shifted at her tone. Seraphine did not look toward him.
"I want you to describe what you already perceive," she continued. "You will not touch anything, test anything, or attempt to exploit what you see."
Liam leaned back as far as the security band allowed. "That is the first sensible restriction anyone has given me."
Seraphine instructed him to close his eyes.
The physical chamber disappeared, but its weaknesses did not.
Pale breaks remained suspended in the darkness. Liam could still identify the strained supports surrounding the observation glass and the damaged connection inside the nearest ceiling mechanism. The ordinary shapes became indistinct, yet every fracture appeared sharpened by their absence.
"They are still there," Liam said.
"What remains visible?" Seraphine asked.
"The walls. The restraints. The machinery above me." Liam turned his closed eyes toward the door. "Not the objects themselves. Only where they are weak."
"Do the fractures disappear when you turn away?"
"Some do," Liam answered. "Others stay after I notice them."
Seraphine recorded the response. "What does continued use feel like?"
Liam opened his eyes. "Pain. Pressure behind them. I cannot sort through everything quickly enough, and closing my eyes does not let me rest."
Seraphine looked toward the observation glass. "Reduce the chamber lighting."
A medical official activated the communication system. "Specialist, lower visibility may interfere with monitoring."
"Then use thermal and pulse readings," Seraphine replied. "Remove everyone from the observation area who is not necessary for security or medical response."
Several officials protested at once.
Seraphine turned toward them. "Ruined Sight is already overwhelming him. Adding unnecessary movement, light, and equipment serves no purpose except your curiosity."
The chamber lights dimmed. Most of the officials disappeared from behind the glass.
The fractures remained, but the ordinary pressure surrounding them lessened. Liam's shoulders relaxed by a fraction.
Above the assessment level, the Awakening Ceremony continued.
Group Fourteen progressed around the reinforced containment plate occupying Position Sixty-Two. The plate remained empty and guarded while Positions Sixty-Six through Seventy completed their connections without incident. The next five advanced, and another five entered preparation.
Set after set passed normally.
The Origin Well released each candidate after displaying a complete holographic reading. No current turned black. No dark-purple vapor rose from the water. Nothing immense moved beneath its impossible depths.
By the time Positions Ninety-Six through One Hundred completed their Awakenings, the amphitheater had regained a cautious version of order.
The presiding official stepped forward.
"Group Fifteen, Positions One through Five, advance to the Origin Well," he announced. "Positions Six through Ten, report to preparation."
Paisley Vale felt the folded message beneath her wristband.
She had read it often enough that the words no longer required paper.
You know Liam? I know where he's been. Find me after this. —43
Position Forty-Three remained four candidates away.
The man standing there behaved as though he had never sent anything. He watched the plates, followed every official instruction, and never looked toward Paisley long enough to attract attention.
She still did not know whether he was Liam's friend, another worker, a government informant, or someone attempting to exploit what he had overheard. He could have identified her publicly after hearing her speak Liam's name. Instead, he had passed the message in secret.
That was enough reason to seek him out.
It was not enough reason to trust him.
While Group Fifteen progressed through its early sets, Seraphine prepared the first controlled assessment of Ruined Sight.
An opaque divider was placed inside Liam's chamber. Behind it, officials arranged several objects: an intact metal component, another containing a concealed fracture, a damaged restraint joint, a sealed device with unstable internal wiring, and a fragment of ceremonial stone recovered near the Origin Well plates.
Liam was kept several paces away.
Seraphine gestured toward the divider. "Tell me which objects contain meaningful damage."
"I can already see through it," Liam said.
A security official behind the observation glass leaned toward the communication panel. "He has confirmed perception through visual barriers."
Liam's jaw tightened. "I confirmed that I cannot stop seeing what you placed in front of me."
Seraphine raised one hand, silencing the official. "Identify the objects, Liam."
He focused despite the pain behind his eyes. The concealed fracture within the second component appeared as a thin pale break. The damaged restraint joint contained a denser cluster of weakness. Instability spread through the sealed device's internal wiring.
The ceremonial stone was different.
Dark-purple traces passed through it in patterns that did not resemble physical damage. The marks appeared deeper than the stone's surface, as though the material remembered something that had passed through it.
"The first component is intact," Liam said. "The second is fractured. The restraint joint is damaged, and the sealed device has a failing connection inside it."
Seraphine looked toward the final object. "And the stone?"
Liam stared at the unnatural marks. "Something is wrong with it, but it is not broken the same way."
"What is the difference?" Seraphine asked.
"I do not know."
The security official activated the communicator again. "This proves he can identify vulnerabilities within containment equipment."
Liam turned toward the observation glass. "I did not ask to see your walls breaking. I cannot stop seeing them."
"Involuntary perception is not hostile conduct," Seraphine said to the official. "If you punish him for answering honestly, he will have no reason to cooperate again."
She ended the test before the pain behind Liam's eyes became disabling.
At the Origin Well, Group Fifteen reached its ninth set.
"Positions Forty-One through Forty-Five, report to preparation," the presiding official announced.
Marcus Hale left the main formation as Position Forty-Three.
Paisley watched him enter the preparation area. He did not turn toward her, but she now knew the person who had sent the message was about to Awaken.
Officials scanned the five candidates' wristbands and directed them toward the plates. Marcus stepped onto Position Forty-Three while the other four candidates took their assigned places.
The Origin Well restrained them.
Five currents separated beneath the ancient water and rose without hesitation.
Marcus felt the connection enter him, and a solid pressure settled around his body. For one instant, the noise of the amphitheater disappeared beneath the sensation of standing before something ancient enough to measure him without judgment.
A controlled force spread from his chest across his shoulders and down his arms. Pale, fortress-like lines appeared briefly along his skin before gathering into a faint mantle around his body.
The hologram formed above him.

BLESSING CEILING: CELESTIAL
The reaction across the amphitheater was immediate.
Marcus's Blessing did not approach the impossible scale of Divine Ruin, but a Celestial ceiling was rare enough to draw military and government attention. Officials began marking his record before the Origin Well had released him.
Marcus looked toward Group Fifteen as the restraint beneath his feet vanished.
At the same moment, the presiding official called the next set.
"Positions Forty-Six through Fifty, advance to the Origin Well."
Paisley moved forward as Marcus was escorted away.
Their paths drew close beside the plate boundary. Marcus slowed. Paisley shifted toward the side of her line nearest him, her fingers pressing against the hidden message beneath her wristband.
Before either could speak, an official placed a hand against Marcus's shoulder.
"Post-Awakening processing is through the eastern corridor," the official ordered.
Another attendant pointed Paisley back into numerical order. "Position Forty-Seven, remain with your set."
Marcus and Paisley exchanged one brief look before the processing routes separated them.
Paisley stepped onto her plate.
High in the amphitheater, Sophia watched her daughter approach the Origin Well only a short time after seeing the son she had believed lost for ten years taken beneath the ceremonial field.
The current that reached Paisley did not darken the water. It rose normally, entered her, and established a clean connection.
Her hologram appeared.
CANDIDATE NAME: PAISLEY VALE
Marcus saw the line through a holographic feed mounted inside the medical corridor.
Vale.
He remembered the way she had looked toward the upper seating and whispered to someone she called Mom. He remembered the certainty in her voice when she said Liam was alive.
Paisley was connected to Liam's family. The shared surname made that nearly certain, but Marcus still did not know the precise relationship between them.
Before the rest of Paisley's reading completed, a medical partition slid shut across Marcus's view.
"Face forward," an examiner instructed him. "Your classification examination is beginning."
Marcus looked away from the sealed partition and obeyed.
Paisley completed her Awakening successfully. The Origin Well released her, and officials directed her into the western medical corridor.
As she entered, she caught sight of Marcus through a partially open examination partition.
He saw her at the same moment.
Marcus moved toward the opening. Paisley lifted one edge of the folded message from beneath her wristband to show that she had received it.
A medical attendant closed the partition between them.
"Position Forty-Seven, enter the examination bay," the attendant ordered.
"I only need a moment," Paisley said.
"You will have no unsupervised contact until medical clearance and classification are complete," the attendant replied.
On the other side, Marcus addressed his examiner. "I need to speak with Position Forty-Seven."
"You need to complete processing," the examiner said. "Any personal conversation can wait."
Marcus glanced toward the sealed partition. He knew better than to argue while his new Blessing classification remained undecided.
Group Fifteen continued Awakening while both of them underwent examination.
The final candidates eventually completed their connections, and the presiding official declared the ceremony finished. Spectators were released by section, beginning with the lower tiers, but every awakened candidate remained inside the restricted processing system.
Sophia could not reach Paisley.
Paisley could not reach Marcus.
Neither of them could reach Liam.
Officials distributed classification paperwork and directed the newly awakened candidates into a central concourse. There, they learned that Awakening did not grant automatic understanding of the internal structure created by their Blessings.
An instructor addressed the assembled candidates.
"Before release or reassignment, every awakened individual will complete supervised Origin Realm induction," the instructor explained. "You will be taught how to recognize the inward connection, enter safely, locate your personal well, inspect your private Blessing information, and return without destabilizing the connection."
Marcus searched the concourse until he found Paisley on the opposite side.
Paisley saw him and began crossing toward him.
Marcus moved at the same time.
Officials entered the space between them and began dividing candidates into instructional groups.
"Remain behind your assigned markings," a guard ordered.
Marcus stopped before the guard could physically redirect him. "Is Position Forty-Seven assigned to this section?"
"Remain silent until your number is called," the guard replied.
Paisley closed her hand around the folded message and returned to her line.
The assignments continued.
Marcus received a corridor designation from one official. Paisley received hers from another. Neither could see the other's document.
Marcus entered the designated line and followed it toward a secured instructional wing. Several moments later, another processing line merged with his.
Paisley entered the corridor among the newly awakened candidates.
Relief crossed her face before she concealed it.
Marcus gave her a small nod.
An instructor opened the reinforced doors ahead of them. "No conversation until orientation is complete," she ordered. "Enter and take the first available seat."
Marcus and Paisley entered the same Origin Realm instruction hall, but several candidates separated their rows.
Far beneath them, Seraphine reviewed the results of Liam's assessment.
Ruined Sight could identify surface damage, concealed fractures, internal mechanical failures, and residual supernatural instability. It could perceive certain weaknesses through physical barriers. Liam could not deactivate it, narrow its focus, or control how much information entered his awareness.
Security officials requested further testing against weapons, armor, suppression mechanisms, and living subjects.
Seraphine refused every request.
"His exhaustion makes further testing medically irresponsible and the results scientifically unreliable," she told them. "Nothing else will be authorized today."
Liam remained seated inside the dim chamber. "What happens to me now?"
"You remain under specialist containment until Ruined Sight can be stabilized and Divine Ruin's immediate risks can be evaluated," Seraphine answered.
"Specialist containment," Liam repeated. "That sounds like a cleaner phrase for imprisonment."
"At present, it is," Seraphine said. "The difference is that the restrictions now apply to your captors as well as to you."
Liam disliked the answer, but he could not accuse her of hiding its meaning.
Inside the instruction hall, reinforced doors closed behind the newly awakened candidates.
Paisley still carried Marcus's message beneath her wristband. Marcus knew she was almost certainly connected to Liam's family, but he did not know how. Paisley knew Marcus possessed information about the ten years Liam had been missing, but she had not told him that Liam was her brother.
The instructor stepped before the room.
"Your Blessings awakened at the Origin Well," she began. "What awakened inside you cannot be understood through a public hologram alone. Before any of you leave this complex, you will learn how to enter your Origin Realms."
Paisley looked across the room.
Marcus met her eyes.
For the fourth time, the conversation between them was delayed.
