Chapter 44 - Crimson Movements

The Bloodheart court did not sleep.

Even after the nobles withdrew from the throne hall, the castle remained alive with quiet movement. Servants carried crimson lanterns through the corridors. Guards rotated silently along the balconies overlooking the city. Shadows stretched long across the black marble floors as midnight deepened.

But the throne hall remained lit.

Dormon Bloodheart had not moved from his throne.

Neither had Izazel.

Kael still lay unconscious on the stone table beneath the ancient banners of the Bloodheart family. The faint glow beneath his skin had dimmed after the stabilization ritual, but the Tier-Five fragment had not disappeared.

It waited.

Like a predator resting before another hunt.

Nyx sat beside him with her head resting lightly against the table. Her small hand still held Kael's fingers.

Ashfang lay at her feet.

The wolf had not slept.

His golden eyes moved constantly, watching the shadows, watching the distant balconies, watching every vampire who passed the hall entrance.

He trusted Kael.

He trusted Nyx.

He trusted Izazel.

But the rest of this place smelled like danger.

---

Dormon finally spoke.

"You remain."

Izazel leaned against one of the columns, arms folded.

"Yes."

Dormon's red eyes studied him.

"You expected the court to react more violently."

Izazel shrugged slightly.

"I expected someone to try killing him before you finished speaking."

A faint smile touched Dormon's lips.

"They considered it."

Ashfang growled quietly.

Izazel glanced down at the wolf.

"They're thinking about it now."

Dormon nodded once.

"Of course they are."

He leaned forward slightly on the throne.

"An anomaly invites ambition."

---

Izazel stepped closer to the throne platform.

"Then why protect him?"

Dormon did not answer immediately.

His gaze moved toward Kael.

Toward the faint red glow beneath the boy's skin.

"Because this anomaly interests me."

Izazel frowned slightly.

"You're not the curious type."

Dormon chuckled softly.

"No."

His eyes sharpened.

"I am the cautious type."

---

Nyx shifted slightly beside the table.

She did not wake.

But her fingers tightened around Kael's hand.

Dormon watched her for a moment.

"That girl would kill for him."

Izazel followed his gaze.

"Yes."

"Without hesitation."

"Yes."

Dormon nodded slowly.

"Good."

Izazel blinked.

"…Good?"

Dormon leaned back again.

"Loyalty like that is rare."

His voice lowered slightly.

"And dangerous."

---

Ashfang lifted his head suddenly.

Something had changed.

The wolf's ears twitched.

"Movement," he sent.

Izazel turned instantly toward the hall entrance.

Two guards entered quickly, both kneeling before the throne.

"My lord."

Dormon's expression did not change.

"Speak."

The first guard raised his head slightly.

"A messenger has arrived."

Izazel's eyes narrowed.

"At this hour?"

The guard swallowed.

"…From the outer watchtowers."

Dormon gestured calmly.

"Continue."

The second guard spoke this time.

"They report unusual movement near the eastern mountain pass."

Izazel straightened.

Dormon's gaze sharpened.

"What kind of movement?"

The guard hesitated.

"Controllers."

---

Silence fell like a blade across the hall.

Ashfang's growl rumbled deep in his chest.

Izazel stepped forward.

"How many?"

"Uncertain."

The guard's voice trembled slightly.

"But the scouts report at least three high-tier signatures."

Izazel's eyes darkened.

"Tier Four."

Dormon nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The ancient vampire lord stood.

The movement alone changed the entire atmosphere of the hall.

"Send word to the outer commanders."

The guards bowed immediately.

"My lord."

"Double the watch on the eastern ridges."

"Yes, my lord."

"And summon the council at dawn."

The guards left quickly.

---

Izazel exhaled slowly.

"That didn't take long."

Dormon looked toward the mountains beyond the castle walls.

"No."

His voice carried faint amusement.

"They felt the disturbance."

Izazel frowned.

"What disturbance?"

Dormon gestured toward Kael.

"The fragment stabilization."

Izazel blinked.

"You think they noticed that?"

Dormon turned toward him.

"The Crimson Cull monitors every Tier-Five fragment in existence."

A pause.

"When one changes behavior…"

His eyes glowed faintly.

"…they investigate."

---

Ashfang stood now.

The wolf paced slowly beside the table.

"Hunt coming."

Izazel nodded.

"Yes."

Nyx stirred slightly but did not wake.

Kael remained motionless.

Dormon studied the boy again.

"Interesting timing."

Izazel raised an eyebrow.

"You think they know he's here?"

Dormon shook his head slowly.

"No."

"But they know something happened."

---

Izazel walked to the edge of the throne platform and looked out through the massive hall windows.

The Bloodheart city stretched beneath them.

Crimson lanterns glowing.

Stone towers rising into the night.

Beyond them…

Dark mountains.

"And if they discover he's here?"

Dormon answered calmly.

"They will come."

Izazel turned back.

"With an army."

Dormon's smile returned.

"Possibly."

---

Ashfang's tail flicked.

"Fight?"

Izazel laughed softly.

"Eventually."

The wolf looked disappointed.

---

Dormon stepped down from the throne platform again.

He walked slowly toward Kael.

The glow beneath the boy's skin pulsed once.

Then faded.

The ancient vampire lord placed his hand lightly against Kael's forehead.

"…Wake soon."

Izazel frowned.

"How soon?"

Dormon's eyes flickered slightly.

"Soon enough to complicate things."

---

Nyx's eyes opened slowly.

She looked up.

The first thing she did was check Kael.

Still breathing.

Her shoulders relaxed slightly.

Then she noticed the tension in the hall.

Ashfang standing.

Izazel watching the mountains.

Dormon beside the table.

Something had changed.

Izazel noticed her awake.

"Bad news," he said quietly.

Nyx stared at him.

Izazel tilted his head toward the distant peaks.

"They're coming."

Nyx looked at Kael again.

Then back toward the mountains.

Her eyes hardened.

---

Far away.

Beyond the eastern mountain pass.

A group of figures stood on a narrow ridge overlooking the Bloodheart valley.

Their cloaks moved slowly in the wind.

Three of them.

Each marked with rotating crimson sigils.

Controllers.

One of them stepped forward.

His voice carried calm authority.

"Confirm the signal."

Another nodded.

"The Tier-Five fragment changed state."

The leader looked toward the distant castle lights.

"…Inside vampire territory."

The third controller frowned.

"You think they have it?"

The leader's lips curved slightly.

"I think someone is hiding it."

He turned.

"Send word to the Cull."

The other two nodded.

"Phase Two begins."

The wind carried their cloaks behind them like crimson wings.

And far below…

The lights of Bloodheart castle burned quietly in the night.

Unaware that the Crimson Cull had already begun moving.

The war had not started yet.

But the first pieces were already on the board.
