Chapter 43 - The Court of Blood

The throne hall of Bloodheart did not empty when Lord Dormon finished speaking.

If anything, the atmosphere grew heavier.

Word traveled quickly in ancient houses like this. Nobles who had been quietly observing from the edges of the chamber now stepped closer, their crimson cloaks whispering against polished black stone.

They did not move like common courtiers.

They moved like predators circling a wounded animal.

And the wounded animal was lying on the stone table beside the throne.

Kael.

Unconscious.

Alive.

And now the center of attention.

Nyx remained beside him, fingers tightly holding his hand as though letting go might allow the boy to vanish.

Ashfang sat near her feet, golden eyes tracking every movement around the room.

He did not growl.

Not yet.

But the wolf's instincts were screaming.

Too many hunters.

Too many teeth hidden behind polite smiles.

Izazel watched them as well.

He knew the Bloodheart court.

He had grown up among these people.

And he knew exactly what came next.

Judgment.

---

The first voice came from the left side of the chamber.

A tall woman stepped forward from the rows of nobles. Her hair fell like black silk over armor crafted from overlapping crimson scales. A narrow blade rested at her hip.

Her eyes glowed faintly red as she bowed her head slightly toward the throne.

"Lord Dormon."

Dormon Bloodheart leaned back against his throne, fingers resting loosely against the carved armrest.

"Yes, Lady Seressa."

Her gaze shifted toward Kael.

"We bring a human into the heart of Bloodheart territory."

Her voice remained calm, but the weight behind her words was unmistakable.

"That alone is unusual."

She paused.

"But bringing one carrying a Tier-Five anomaly…"

Her eyes flicked toward Izazel.

"…is reckless."

The hall remained silent.

Everyone waited.

Izazel did not hesitate.

"He is under my protection."

Seressa raised one eyebrow.

"Protection?"

Her gaze swept briefly over Nyx and Ashfang.

"You brought a child and a wolf into our ancestral fortress."

Ashfang's lip curled slightly.

Nyx did not move.

Seressa continued.

"And we are meant to believe this is wise?"

Izazel met her gaze evenly.

"Yes."

The word echoed through the hall.

Simple.

Unapologetic.

Seressa tilted her head slightly.

"You gamble with the stability of this house."

Izazel folded his arms.

"No."

His eyes flicked briefly toward Kael.

"I gamble on something greater."

---

Another noble stepped forward now.

This one older.

His hair silver, his posture straight despite the centuries that likely rested on his shoulders.

Lord Vaelric Bloodheart.

One of the oldest members of the family council.

He bowed deeply toward Dormon before speaking.

"My lord."

Dormon watched him calmly.

"Speak."

Vaelric gestured toward Kael.

"You say the boy is an anomaly."

"Yes."

"You say he may destabilize the system itself."

"Yes."

Vaelric nodded slowly.

"Then the logical solution is obvious."

Nyx's grip tightened instantly.

Ashfang's ears flattened.

Izazel's eyes narrowed.

Vaelric finished the sentence calmly.

"We kill him."

---

The hall erupted in murmurs.

Some nodded.

Others frowned.

But no one seemed shocked.

Nyx stood suddenly.

Her movement was small.

But the emotion behind it was enormous.

Her eyes burned as she stepped closer to the table, placing herself between Kael and the nobles.

Ashfang rose beside her instantly.

The wolf's teeth were visible now.

Izazel stepped forward as well.

"No."

The single word cut through the murmurs like a blade.

Vaelric looked at him calmly.

"You would endanger our entire bloodline for a human."

Izazel did not look away.

"He saved my life."

Vaelric's expression did not change.

"That is unfortunate."

Izazel's jaw tightened.

Dormon finally moved.

He raised one hand slightly.

Silence returned immediately.

The lord of Bloodheart rose slowly from his throne.

His presence filled the room like a rising tide.

"You speak of logic, Vaelric."

The old noble bowed his head slightly.

"Yes, my lord."

Dormon descended the steps toward the stone table.

"Logic suggests removing threats."

"Yes."

Dormon stopped beside Kael.

"But logic also suggests studying anomalies."

Vaelric hesitated.

Dormon's eyes flicked toward him.

"And this boy…"

A faint smile returned to the vampire lord's lips.

"…is far more interesting alive."

---

Seressa stepped forward again.

"My lord, curiosity is dangerous."

Dormon nodded slightly.

"Yes."

Seressa's voice remained steady.

"The Crimson Cull already hunts creatures like him."

Izazel's head snapped toward her.

"You know of them?"

Seressa's gaze returned to him.

"We are not blind, Prince Izazel."

She gestured toward the distant mountains beyond the castle walls.

"The Controllers expand their influence every year."

Her eyes flicked briefly toward Kael.

"If they discover he is here…"

The rest of the sentence hung in the air.

War.

Everyone understood the implication.

Dormon considered her words.

Then smiled faintly.

"Good."

Seressa blinked.

"My lord?"

Dormon turned toward the gathered nobles.

"For centuries the Crimson Cull has grown stronger."

His voice echoed through the hall.

"They believe themselves untouchable."

He gestured toward Kael again.

"And now a human appears who can break their Tier-Five seals."

The nobles began whispering again.

This time with a different tone.

Not fear.

Interest.

Dormon spread his hands slightly.

"You speak of danger."

He paused.

"I see opportunity."

---

Izazel watched the court carefully.

He knew this moment mattered.

Bloodheart politics moved slowly.

But when a shift occurred…

It reshaped everything.

Vaelric studied Kael again.

"You would provoke the Controllers."

Dormon shrugged slightly.

"They will come eventually regardless."

Seressa folded her arms.

"You assume this boy survives long enough to matter."

Nyx glared at her.

The noblewoman noticed.

For a moment something almost like amusement flickered across Seressa's expression.

"Such loyalty."

Izazel's voice cut through the tension.

"Enough."

The hall quieted again.

He stepped closer to the throne platform.

"I did not bring Kael here to beg."

His gaze moved across the nobles.

"I brought him here because Bloodheart honors its debts."

Vaelric looked toward Dormon.

"And if the debt is repaid?"

Izazel answered before his father could.

"Then I will leave."

Nyx turned sharply toward him.

Ashfang's ears twitched.

Even Dormon's eyes narrowed slightly.

Vaelric smiled faintly.

"A clean solution."

Seressa nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Dormon studied his son carefully.

"You would abandon him."

Izazel shook his head.

"No."

His voice softened slightly.

"I would honor tradition."

The hall remained silent.

Because Bloodheart tradition was absolute.

Debts must be repaid.

After that—

Paths separated.

---

Nyx looked down at Kael.

Her fingers tightened around his hand.

She did not understand the politics.

But she understood what Izazel had just said.

They would help Kael.

And then leave him.

Her eyes burned again.

Ashfang nudged her gently.

"Pack still here."

Nyx nodded slowly.

Yes.

They were still here.

---

Dormon returned to the throne.

The ancient vampire lord looked over the entire court.

"Enough."

His voice carried authority that could not be argued.

"The boy remains."

No one spoke.

"The debt will be repaid."

Still silence.

Dormon leaned back slightly.

"And until then…"

His red eyes glowed faintly.

"…anyone who harms him answers to me."

That ended the debate.

---

The nobles bowed slightly and began withdrawing from the chamber.

But as they left, whispers moved quietly through the hall.

About Kael.

About the system.

About the Crimson Cull.

Because something new had entered the world.

And the Bloodheart family had chosen not to destroy it.

---

Nyx sat beside Kael again.

Ashfang curled beside the table.

Izazel stood quietly nearby.

Dormon watched them all from his throne.

And for the first time in many centuries…

The lord of Bloodheart felt something rare.

Curiosity.

Because somewhere far beyond these walls, a Tier-Five Controller hunted anomalies.

And now…

One slept beneath the roof of vampire kings.
