Chapter 17 - Seeds Of Broken Promise

The blue sky looked endless, and the weather felt incredibly nice. It was the kind of perfect day that brought a rare sense of peace to everyone's mind. But who could have guessed? This exact moment was the quiet before the storm—the precise start of the destruction of the world.

Outside the front gate of DAV Centenary Public School, three friends walked out together. One was Veer, and the other two were his inseparable best friends, Vaibhav and Anmol.

"So, what's your plan for this summer break?" Vaibhav asked, adjusting his backpack as they walked.

"Of course, playing games or going somewhere to spend my vacations," Veer replied with a casual shrug

Anmol scoffed, crossing his arms playfully. "What the heck do you really think you're doing with all that? Don't you like to sit at home, play games, put some money in the share market, and earn real money?"

Vaibhav laughed, waving him off. "Get off, man! Do you really think we have money to put in the share market?"

"So come to my business area, we can earn a lot of money together," Anmol pressed, his eyes gleaming with teenage ambition.

Veer intervened, shaking his head with a grin. "Don't talk so big. You are just a teen, how can you put money on share markets?"

Anmol chuckled. "Actually, I don't really have a business—I was joking. But the share market is not what you are thinking. You can start by putting just a little bit of money in the share market, like ₹10 to ₹100."

"I can't believe you are a teen too," Vaibhav said, looking at Anmol in amusement. "You're talking way too much about this stuff now."

"Leave it," Veer sighed, smiling. "Let's discuss about something else."

Vaibhav leaned in a bit closer, his tone suddenly turning serious. "Hey, do you know my father is a scientist in DRDO? Secretly, he is making a biotic human—someone who cannot die—which can help us in our Army."

Veer's face paled slightly. The sheer scale of the concept worried him instantly. "That is too dangerous for us. Also, what if they don't listen to our command? Just like a rogue AI."

"You think too much, Veer. Don't worry," Anmol interrupted, trying to lighten the mood. "And Vaibhav, my father can give financial support for these things. If your father wants anything at all, they can talk to my father."

"As you wish!" Veer said, letting the subject drop.

The three teenagers walked away, completely unaware of the eyes tracking their every move. Someone had been standing in the shadows, watching them and listening to everything they discussed regarding those secret tasks.

Later that night, Veer was walking down the street alone. Out of nowhere, the same guys who had been following them at school grabbed him from behind. Before he could shout, they dragged him into a silent, completely empty shop. The street was dead; no one was there to help. They pushed Veer into a chair and tied him up tightly.

Terrified and hyperventilating, Veer struggled against his bonds. "Who are you?! What do you want from me? Help!"

The leader of the group stepped into the dim light, his expression cold as ice. "I am from DRDO. I have been assigned to spy on your friend Vaibhav's family because his father is behaving strangely. When his father's biotic human project—the one who cannot die—is not used for the Army and called a dangerous project, he was told to never do research on it again.

Veer's heart hammered against his ribs. "What?! It can't be possible. Vaibhav's father is..." He swallowed hard. "So, what do you want from me?"

The DRDO agent leaned in closer. "This is for the country, boy. Just go to your friend's house and find his father's laptop. It's an Asus with an 'S.C.' sticker on it. Put this pendrive there and wait until all the files are downloaded onto it. You will do it this Sunday."

"How should I know you are not a kidnapper or a scammer?" Veer barked, his voice shaking with fear.

"See on Google," the guy smirked, pulling out a device. "Look at this Google search, right here is my photo and my information. Here is my ID. And remember, if you don't do this, your parents will also come into danger."

Panicking at the threat to his family, Veer broke down. "No, no! I will do it, I will do it!"

The agent smiled darkly, untying him. "Ah, ah, ah... good. Now you can go, and don't you dare tell anyone what happened to you."

Veer did exactly as the guy said, especially because he realized even the police were helping the agent's side.

Days later, Veer was sitting at home watching the news channel. The anchor's urgent voice pierced the silence of the room: "...Vaibhav's father has been arrested. Furthermore, even those who were helping his father, even for small things, are going to be hanged."

Veer froze. He was truly scared, his entire body feeling as cold as ice. The guilt was suffocating.

Suddenly, his phone rang. The screen displayed the caller ID: Vaibhav.

With trembling hands, Veer answered. Vaibhav's venomous, heartbroken voice immediately filled the speaker. "Veer! What do you think, there is no camera in my house? You will pay for this. I am not gonna leave you."

The next year at school, the fallout was absolute. Veer learned that Vaibhav had left the school, and Anmol was leaving the next year too.

The trauma of that betrayal changed Veer forever. He shifted his entire focus toward his future. He chose to become a police officer and eventually discovered the existence of the ISA—the top, most secret agency in the nation, matching the secrecy of RAW but handling things far more dangerous. Veer excelled, eventually being selected as the Chief Commander in Maharashtra. He went on to solve India's most dangerous mission. If the villain had won that specific case, it would have meant the end of India, or even full Europe.

[Present Day]

Now, Veer had been transferred to Delhi. The case they were currently discussing was no longer a personal matter. The enemy wasn't just targeting him anymore; in this case, the Main Villain was playing a massive, two-sided game, actively damaging the country and attacking the ISA itself.

Veer and the remaining members of the ISA who had not yet been converted into clones arrived at a proper, heavily fortified mansion. At the main gate, a massive scanning machine checked them for weapons, though their clearance allowed them to enter with their gear.

"Hello! Amithi," Veer called out as they walked through the grand entrance.

Amithi crossed her arms, her expression hardening. "Hellooo! Jataksha and all of you. I did not expect to meet all of you here."

Veer cleared his throat awkwardly. 'Ahm...' he thought to himself, feeling the heavy tension in the room. 'Speak in front of me directly. Why is she insulting me? It's clear she doesn't want to talk with me.'

Anmol, Shiven, and Vansh were ducking behind a nearby wall, stifling their laughter and giggling softly as they watched Veer struggle through the awkward encounter.

Jataksha leaned into Amithi's ear, whispering quietly, "Amithi, why are you doing this to Veer?"

Amithi didn't bother lowering her voice. "He deserves this for making me feel uncomfortable back in class 9th. And the biggest case which Veer leads? I was originally working on it. I really spared him back then. But after the case was solved, she told me that I was going to be isolated from the country. She said no one would know me because I was going to be needed for the biggest case... and I believed her!"

Amithi glared directly at Veer. "And then he shows up after two years! I was still living in this mansion all this time, and the ISA just gives me my salary. I will not leave him alone, even if he begs me and says, 'I am the best, you are everything.' Only then will I think about sparing him."

Jataksha let out a soft laugh. "Is not that too much?"

"No," Amithi snapped firmly.

Hearing the whispering and laughing, Veer stepped closer, looking confused. "What happened?!"

The room went quiet, but the heavy atmosphere remained. The immediate drama inside the mansion was nothing compared to the nightmare unfolding across the country. As they all now knew, Sammriddhi was also a clone, meaning she could no longer work at headquarters.

The threat was inside their ranks, but the game was far from over.
