Chapter 25 - Chapter Twenty-Five – When Shadows Threaten

The palace did not scream when danger arrived.

That was the first mistake.

Lyra felt it as she crossed the inner courtyard, not fear, not instinct alone, but wrongness. The air was too still. The servants too quiet. The sound of her boots echoed longer than it should have, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath.

Her wolf stirred uneasily.

Something is watching.

She slowed, senses stretching outward, cataloguing exits, angles, blind spots. The palace had taught her to survive by noticing what others ignored.

A flicker of movement above.

Lyra shifted her weight instinctively,

Stone exploded.

The world fractured into sound and debris as a slab from the upper balustrade shattered, crashing down where she had stood seconds earlier. Screams erupted. Courtiers scattered. Guards surged forward too late, blades half-drawn, confusion rippling through their ranks.

Lyra rolled hard to the side, breath knocked from her lungs, dust coating her tongue.

This wasn't an accident.

This was aimed.

She pushed herself upright, heart hammering, not in panic, but calculation. The strike had been precise. Timed. Designed for public spectacle.

Kill her where everyone can see.

A second shadow shifted overhead.

Before she could move—

Strong arms locked around her waist and yanked her backward with brutal force.

Lyra collided with a solid chest as the Alpha pulled her fully against him, turning his body to shield hers just as another chunk of stone slammed down where her head had been.

The bond detonated.

Heat tore through her chest, sharp and overwhelming. Her wolf surged forward, instincts screaming, recognizing him as safety and threat all at once.

His power flared outward in response, cold, dominant, absolute, forcing the chaos back, guards instinctively forming a barrier around them.

"Don't move," he ordered, voice low and lethal.

Lyra barely heard him.

She was too aware of everything else.

The steady beat of his heart beneath her palm.

The heat of his body pressed along her spine. The way his arm tightened unconsciously, as if anchoring her there.

Too close.

Dangerously close.

The bond pulsed again, hotter, wilder, dragging awareness low, making her breath hitch despite herself.

He felt it.

She knew the instant his jaw clenched, the instant his grip adjusted, not loosening, not tightening, but controlling.

Another impact rang out, then silence as guards swarmed the upper levels, shouting orders, sealing exits. Whoever had planned this was already gone.

The Alpha didn't release her immediately.

For one suspended moment, the world narrowed to the space between them.

"You're hurt," he said.

"No," Lyra replied, forcing her voice steady. "Just targeted."

His gaze dropped to her face.

Something cold and furious flashed there.

"They wanted witnesses."

"Yes."

"They wanted panic."

"Yes."

"And they wanted you dead."

Lyra met his eyes evenly. "They failed."

The bond surged violently at her words, reacting to the certainty in her tone. Her wolf pressed hard against the connection, demanding proximity, demanding claim.

It scared her.

It scared him more.

He stepped back abruptly, releasing her as if realizing just how much control he was exerting.

The loss of contact was immediate, and unsettling.

Lyra straightened, smoothing dust from her sleeves, rebuilding her composure piece by piece while the palace buzzed around them.

"This wasn't intimidation," he said, already shifting into command mode. "It was escalation."

"Yes," Lyra agreed. "They're done testing boundaries."

His gaze lingered on her longer than necessary, as if committing the sight of her, alive, standing, unbroken, to memory.

"You shouldn't still be standing," he said quietly.

"And yet," she replied, "I am."

A faint, dangerous understanding passed between them.

This attack hadn't weakened her position.

It had strengthened it.

Because now the palace knew something crucial.

She was worth killing.

And that meant she mattered.

As the Alpha turned to issue orders, lockdowns, interrogations, sealed wings, Lyra felt the bond slowly settle, still warm, still restless.

Shaken.

Not from fear.

But from how close she had come to him.

How right it had felt.

And how quickly the palace had decided she was no longer expendable.
