Chapter 28 - Chapter Twenty-Eight – A Dangerous Game

The palace celebration was a mistake.

Lyra knew it the moment she stepped into the Grand Hall.

Too many bodies. Too much movement. Music echoing off marble walls, weaving between laughter and polished conversation. The kind of event where proximity was unavoidable and attention was currency.

And the Alpha was already there.

She felt him before she saw him.

The bond stirred low and warm, like a warning she couldn't silence. Her wolf lifted its head, alert, restless, irritated by the sheer number of people packed into one space.

This was dangerous territory.

Lyra took her place along the outer edge of the hall, posture composed, gaze neutral. She wore palace gray, nothing that would draw attention. Nothing that would invite comment.

It didn't matter.

Eyes still found her.

Whispers still followed.

And then the Alpha moved.

He crossed the hall with the kind of quiet authority that bent space around him. Conversations dimmed subtly as he passed. Shoulders straightened. Backs stiffened.

He stopped far too close to her.

Not touching.

Close enough that the bond reacted instantly.

Heat rolled through her chest, sharp and intimate, making her breath catch for just a fraction of a second. She hated that he noticed.

Because he did.

His gaze flicked to her face, darkening slightly.

"Move with me," he said under his breath.

It wasn't a request.

Lyra hesitated, only a heartbeat.

Then she stepped forward.

The crowd shifted as they walked, bodies pressing in from all sides. Someone brushed her arm. Another stumbled slightly, forcing her closer to him.

Their shoulders touched.

The bond flared violently.

Lyra stiffened, her wolf surging, instincts screaming too loudly for comfort. She clenched her jaw, forcing control back into place as heat curled low in her stomach, sharp and unwelcome.

The Alpha's hand came up instinctively, fingers closing around her wrist to steady her.

The contact was brief.

It felt like lightning.

Her breath left her in a rush she couldn't stop. His grip tightened reflexively before he released her as if burned.

"Careful," he said quietly.

Her voice came out lower than intended. "You touched me."

His eyes locked onto hers. "You were falling."

"I wasn't."

"You would have."

The bond pulsed, slow, heavy, aware.

They resumed walking, tension coiling tighter with every step. The palace felt suddenly too small, the music too loud, the air too thick.

At the dais, they stopped.

Too close again.

Someone spoke to the Alpha. Lyra didn't hear the words. She was too aware of the way his presence pressed into her senses, heat, power, restraint wound so tight it was almost visible.

Another accidental touch.

This time her fingers brushed his forearm.

The reaction was instant.

His muscles went rigid beneath her hand. Her wolf surged forward, demanding, possessive, furious at the restraint forced upon it. The bond flared hot enough to make her vision blur for a split second.

She pulled back sharply.

So did he.

The Alpha turned to face her fully now, expression locked down, voice low enough that only she could hear.

"This is becoming a problem."

"Yes," Lyra said, breath shallow. "It is."

"You should keep your distance."

She laughed softly, not amused. "You're the one standing too close."

Silence crackled between them.

Around them, the palace watched without seeing, sensed without understanding. They saw tension. They saw interest.

They did not see the restraint it took not to close that last inch.

The Alpha stepped back first.

The bond protested violently, like a living thing denied oxygen. Lyra pressed her palm discreetly to her sternum, steadying herself.

Dangerous.

This was dangerous.

As the event dragged on, it didn't get easier. Every shared space, every forced proximity, every accidental brush sent the bond into sharp, restless spirals. By the time the music softened and courtiers began to disperse, Lyra felt wrung tight with tension.

She slipped out early, pulse racing.

From the far end of the hall, the Alpha watched her go.

His control was intact.

Barely.

This wasn't desire.

Not yet.

It was something far more volatile.

The palace had turned their bond into a game.

And neither of them was winning.
