Amara's POV
Roman called me on Wednesday afternoon while I was pretending to work on a story about local business permits.
"William found something. David's been getting cash payments for the past four months. Small amounts but consistent. He's also got a burner phone with calls from a number we can't trace."
I set down my pen.
"How long has he been watching me?"
"At least four months, maybe longer."
Four months of David going through my things and I hadn't noticed.
"We're picking him up tonight. I'll send a car for you at six thirty."
I said yes.
"This won't be pleasant," he said.
"I know."

A black car pulled up outside my apartment at six thirty. William was driving.
I got in the back and he drove without saying anything.
We went out of Manhattan and through Brooklyn into an area with old warehouses and empty lots. William stopped in front of a warehouse with broken windows and a rusted metal door.
Roman's car was already there.
"He's inside," William said.
