I had no idea how much time had passed. Minutes, hours or perhaps a day. The blindfold remained tightly secured around my eyes, and without the light of the sun or the sound of bells to guide me, time had become meaningless.
All I had were footsteps. Footsteps outside the room.
Sometimes hurried and slow. Sometimes stopping directly outside my door then silence.
I sat against the cold stone wall with my hands still tied behind me. My shoulders ached and my wrists burned. My stomach hurt so badly that I had stopped trying to ignore it.
I couldn't remember the last time I'd eaten. I tried to think back. I swallowed my spit. The thought I had been trying desperately not to accept returned.
The Royal Pack. The Alpha King.
My breathing quickened. I remembered him. I remembered the way everyone lowered their heads when he walked past. The way servants became invisible around him. His presence alone could make
an entire room fall silent.
