Chapter 9 - Dancing on the Edge of Ruin

The tension in the air was thick enough to choke a dragon. On one side, Elara—the literal embodiment of Light—was reaching out with a hand that promised safety and "goodness." On the other, Seraphina—a shark in red silk—was offering a partnership in crime that could potentially clear Kaelen's debt for good.

Kaelen looked at Seraphina's wrist. Fifty million. She was a "small-time" criminal compared to his trillion-point extinction event, but she was ahead of the game.

"Elara, forgive me," Kaelen said, his voice dripping with that fabricated, heart-wrenching sincerity. He gently squeezed the Saintess's hand before letting go. "Lady Seraphina seems... troubled. As a student of the Academy, I feel it is my duty to see if I can guide her toward a more virtuous path."

Alaric choked on his drink. Seraphina's eyes danced with wicked amusement.

[NOTIFICATION!] [Skill Synergy: 'False Saint's Halo' + 'Bold-Faced Lie'.] [Result: Elara believes you are being a martyr. +20 Karma.] [Result: Seraphina thinks you are a hilarious sociopath. +50 Shop Credit.]

Kaelen took Seraphina's hand. Her skin was ice-cold. As the orchestra began a sweeping, dark waltz, he led her onto the floor.

"Guide me to a virtuous path?" Seraphina whispered as they spun, her red dress flaring like a pool of blood. "You have more gall than a king, Kaelen."

"I was a king," Kaelen corrected smoothly, stepping perfectly in time. "And you were a butcher. Let's not get sentimental. Talk. How does a girl like you end up in the red?"

"The same as you," she replied, her grip on his shoulder tightening. "I succeeded. I poisoned the Seven Duchies, took the throne, and was about to execute the Hero when the 'Bankruptcy Act' hit. Now, the System forces me to play 'Nice High-Born Lady' while siphoning my mana to pay for the lives I took."

"So you want to rob the Academy," Kaelen said. "Ambitious. But the Headmaster is a Peak-Rank Saint."

"I don't want the gold, you fool," Seraphina hissed, leaning her head against his shoulder to hide their conversation. "Underneath this school, in the Restricted Vault, lies the Heart of Aethelgard. It's a massive reserve of 'Pure Karma' used to power the city's wards. If we tap into it, we don't just pay our interest. We wipe the slate clean."

[NEW QUEST: THE GREAT HEIST] [Goal: Infiltrate the Restricted Vault.] [Reward: 10,000,000 Karma Points.] [Failure: Eternal Damnation / Soul Liquidation.]

Kaelen's heart thrummed. Ten million wouldn't clear his trillion-point debt, but it would buy him centuries of breathing room. It would allow him to buy the high-tier Void skills he needed to truly regain his power.

"And why involve me?" Kaelen asked.

"Because I can't get past the Light-Wards," she admitted, her eyes darting toward Elara, who was watching them from the sidelines with a worried expression. "But you... you have the 'Saintess' wrapped around your finger. Her signature can open the outer gates. You get the girl, I get the tools, and we both get our lives back."

Kaelen looked over Seraphina's shoulder. Elara was biting her lip, looking genuinely concerned that Kaelen was being "corrupted" by the wicked Lady von Hestia.

"A heist," Kaelen mused. "It's a bit cliché, don't you think?"

"Clichés work for a reason," Seraphina countered.

Suddenly, the music turned discordant. The crystal chandeliers flickered and turned a sickly, bruised purple.

[WARNING!] [Unscheduled Event: The Shadow Banquet.] [The 'Assassins of the Fallen Moon' have infiltrated the Ball!]

The stained-glass windows shattered inward. Dark figures in grey cowls dropped from the ceiling, their blades coated in a green, paralytic poison. The students screamed, panicking as the "Heroic" instructors struggled to react to the dampening field the assassins had brought with them.

One assassin landed directly between Kaelen and Seraphina, his blade whistling toward Kaelen's throat.

Kaelen didn't flinch. He looked at Seraphina. "Partner?"

Seraphina's hand vanished into the folds of her dress, emerging with a needle-thin stiletto. "Only if you stay out of my way."

[COMBAT MODE ACTIVATED!] [Objective: Protect the Students (Earn Karma) OR Use the chaos to steal the Vault Key (Earn Progress).]

Kaelen looked at the terrified Elara, then at the assassin. He reached into his "Shop" inventory.

"I'll do both," Kaelen whispered.
