Chapter 8 - The Viper in Silk

The Academy Ball is the perfect stage for a villain to shine—or for a shark to find a bigger predator.

The Grand Hall was a cathedral of excess. Crystal chandeliers hummed with light-affinity mana, casting a warm, golden glow over hundreds of young nobles in flowing silks and rigid military dress. For most, this was a night of romance. For Kaelen, it was a networking event for the damned.

Kaelen adjusted his collar. He was wearing a borrowed, slightly ill-fitting suit, but the False Saint's Halo made him look like a "charming commoner with a heart of gold" rather than a peasant in a costume.

[NOTIFICATION!] [Social Event: The Mid-Term Masquerade.] [Opportunity: High-density 'Sin' environment detected.] [Active Quest: The Shadow in the Spotlight.]

"Kaelen! You actually came!"

Elara glided through the crowd. She looked ethereal in a dress of pale moonlight blue, her Saintess-in-training aura practically radiating purity. Beside her, Alaric hovered like a dark cloud, his arm in a sling and his eyes darting around as if expecting the floor to swallow him again.

"I couldn't miss seeing you, Elara," Kaelen said, his voice smooth as honey.

Alaric scoffed, but before he could bark an insult, the music stopped. The giant doors at the head of the hall swung open.

A girl stepped in, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop five degrees. She had hair as black as a raven's wing and eyes the color of fresh blood. Her dress was a deep, aggressive crimson, trailing behind her like a spill of wine.

This was Lady Seraphina von Hestia. In the original timeline, she wasn't a hero. She was the "Ice Queen" who had bankrupted three duchies and executed her own father to take his throne.

[WARNING!] [True Villainess Detected: Seraphina von Hestia.] [Alignment: Chaotic Evil (Hidden).] [System Note: Her 'Karma Debt' is almost as high as yours.]

Kaelen's eyes sharpened. Wait. She has a debt too?

Seraphina didn't look at the Headmaster or the Saintess. Her gaze cut through the crowd, ignoring the handsome heirs and the powerful mages, until it locked onto Kaelen. She didn't look at him with disdain; she looked at him with the hunger of a starving person seeing a feast.

She walked straight toward him, the crowd parting like the Red Sea.

"You," she said, her voice a low, melodic purr. She stood inches from Kaelen, ignoring Elara and Alaric entirely. She leaned in, sniffing the air near his neck. "You smell like sulfur, void-fire, and... poverty."

"It's a new fragrance," Kaelen deadpanned. "Very exclusive."

Seraphina smiled, showing teeth that were just a little too sharp. "I saw what you did to the Professor. And I saw how you 'saved' that golden retriever beside you." She glanced at Alaric, who bristled. "Very clever. But you're playing in the dirt. Why bother with crumbs when we could share the bakery?"

[SYSTEM PROMPT!] [A Villainess has offered an Alliance.] [Benefit: Access to the 'Black Market' System Shop.] [Risk: She will likely try to kill you and take your Karma if you show weakness.]

"I'm a good student, Lady Seraphina," Kaelen said, his False Saint's Halo pulsing with a brilliant, deceptive light. "I have no idea what 'bakery' you're talking about."

Seraphina laughed, a cold, sharp sound. She leaned in closer, her lips brushing his ear. "Don't lie to a liar, Kaelen. I know you're bankrupt. I know the System is breathing down your neck. Because..."

She pulled back her sleeve just enough for him to see. Faint, glowing red numbers were etched into her wrist, flickering in time with her pulse.

[Current Karma Balance: -500,000,000]

Kaelen felt a jolt of genuine surprise. He wasn't the only one. The System hadn't just regressed him; it had regressed his rivals too, and it was pitting them against each other in a survival-of-the-fittest debt-repayment scheme.

"Dance with me," Seraphina commanded, her eyes gleaming. "And let's discuss how we're going to rob this Academy blind before the interest comes due."

Elara stepped forward, her face clouded. "Kaelen, I don't think you should—"

[DECISION TIME!]

Dance with the Devil: Follow Seraphina to unlock the Black Market and a dangerous alliance.

Stay with the Saintess: Use Elara's "Purity" to mask your aura, but miss out on the Villainess's intel.

The Triple Play: Suggest a group dance and watch the chaos unfold.

What is Kaelen's next move?
