Sally nodded without a word.
It took me a moment to absorb what had just happened. Benjamin had left White Corporation to Sally, not Marcus. Marcus was his son, and yet his father had chosen differently. I didn't fully understand it — the history between them, the promises made, the debts owed — but I could see it had landed hard. The kind of blow that doesn't announce itself loudly. It just settles in quietly and stays.
Marcus walked out without looking back. I went after him, trailing him through the corridor and out into the cold night air. The hospital entrance hummed behind us, bright and indifferent. I didn't know what to say, so I started with the simplest thing. "Marcus, have you eaten anything?"
"I'm not hungry." He didn't slow down or look at me.
I followed him to the car park. Before he could reach for his keys, I stepped around him and slipped into the driver's seat. "I'll take you home."
