Silvia's face went white. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out. Her hands dropped to her lap, and she looked down at the table as if the wood grain held the answer to a question she had not asked.
Nala laughed. It was a rich, warm sound that did not match the cold amusement in her eyes. "I was thinking the same thing."
Silvia wished the earth would open and swallow her whole. Two powerful people, sitting at the same table, mocking her like this. If word of this got out, her standing in society would crumble to dust. No one would invite her to parties.
She would become invisible, the way Jinx had been for years.
She swallowed her pride and bowed her head. "I apologize for my behavior. It was out of line."
Nala raised an eyebrow. "Is it us you should be apologizing to?"
Silvia looked at Jinx. Her throat tightened. She had spent years tormenting this woman, and now she was being asked to beg for forgiveness. She opened her mouth and forced the words out. "I am sorry."
