The dorms grew quieter as the night deepened.
Laughter faded into whispers.
Doors closed softly.
Lights dimmed one by one.
Christopher sat alone on the common-area couch ,phone in his hand .unread messages glowing on the screen. His mind felt louder than the room.
Footsteps approached.
Zia,
She hesitated when she saw him,then walked over anyway.
"Can't sleep?" She asked.
He shook his head ."too much noise on my head."
She smiled faintly. "Same ."
They sat at opposite ends of the couch at first, space between them like an unspoken rule.silence stretched----but it didn't feel awkward.
"I don't usually like trips,"Christopher said suddenly.
"They make things...messy."
Zia glanced at him ."messy how?"
"People expect you to be someone else,"he replied. "Someone louder, braver,happier. "
She understood that more than she wanted to admit.
My life looks perfect, "She said quietly.
"But something it feels like I'm just playing a role."
Christopher looked at her then ---really looked.
"That sounds exhausting. "
"It is ," She whispered.
The space between them shrank without either of them moving much.
Across the room,Sofee stood near the doorway, watching. Her fingers curled around her phone.
Leo appeared beside her.
"You should go back to your room," he said calmly.
Sofee bristld. "Why ?he's my friend too."
Leo's voice stayed steady, "So is she ."
The tension lingered.
Outside ,Ethan sat on the steps, headphones on,pretending not to notice anything---while noticing everything.
Back on the couch , Zia shifted slightly her knee brushed Christopher's.
Neither moved away.
Their eyes met.
Breath slowed.
The world felt smaller.
Not a confession.
Not a touch.
Just awareness.
Just feeling.
A voice echoed from the hallway----teacher's call for lights -out.
They pulled apart instinctively.
Zia stood first.
"Goodnight, Christopher."
"Goodnight. "Zia ."
She walked away, heart racing.
Christopher stayed seated ,staring at the empty space beside him.
For the first time ,he didn't try to push the feeling away.
He just let it exist .
