The library smelled of old books and quiet discipline.
Zia reached first ,placing her bag on the long wooden table. She liked libraries---No expectations, no pretending . When Christopher arrived a minute later , Sleeves rolled up ,backpack slung over one Shoulder ,She noticed how natural he looked here.like this space belonged to him.
"Hey ,"He said. Simple and polite.
"Hi ."
A pause. Not awkward. Just ....still.
They sat opposite each other. Books opening, pages flipping. For a while. There were only soft sounds---pens moving ,chair Scraping, Distant whispers.
Christopher broke the silence. "So....we Should divide the work."
Zia nodded. I'll handle the introduction and background. You're good at analysis right ?"
He looked mildly Surprised. "You noticed?"
She shrugged. "You answer like you've already thought things through.
A small smile tugged at his lips. " fair ."
Minutes passed. The more. Something about the silence changed----it stopped feeling like two people sitting together and Started feeling like one shared Space.
Across the room ,Sofee stood near the shelves, Pretending to Search for a book she didn't need. Her eyes flicked toward them again and again.
They weren't laughing. They weren't flirting.
That somehow made it worse.
Outside Evan spotted them through the glass walls .
"Ohhh,"he drawled, elbowing Leo. "Study dates already?"
"It's a project, " Leo said quickly .
Evan raised a brow ."You sure sound defensive. "
Leo 's jaw tightened . "Drop it."
But he didn't look away .
Inside ,Zia leaned forward, pointing at a line in the book. Her fingers brushed Christopher's hand----just for a second.
She froze.
Christopher froze too.
"Sorry ,"She said instantly.
"It's---fine ," he replied, a little too fast.
Neither of them pulled away immediately.
Then they did.
Their eyes met, something unspoken passing between them .Not attraction, Not yet .more like ---recognition .
That evening. Christopher's house was unusually quite.
His father sat at the dining table, phone in hand. " You've been out a lot lately ."
"School work," Christopher replied.
His stepmother added," Grades matter. Distraction don't. "
Christopher nodded though the word Distraction lingered longer than it should have.
Upstairs, his phone buzzed.
Zia:
I finished my Part .I'll send it tomorrow.
He stared at the screen before typing.
Christopher:
Take your time. You did well today.
Three dots appeared. Then disappeared.
Across town,Zia locked her phone and leaned back against her bed .Jason's voice echoed from a call She had ended earlier---complaints ,demands, questions.
She didn't have energy for.
She exhaled slowly.
Why did working with Christopher feel ...easy ?
At school the next day, Sofee finally cornered Zia.
"You and Christopher seem close lately, "She said ,smiling---but her eyes weren't.
Zia frowned. "We 're just classmates. "
Sofee laughed Softly ."just saying. Some people get attached easily. "
Zia didn't reply. But somewhere deep inside, something stirred ---confusion ,curiosity, maybe the first flicker of jealousy she didn't yet recognize.
From a distance , Christopher watched them talking.
Leo stood beside him ,hands in pockets.
"You okay ?"
Christopher nodded. "Yeah .why ?"
Leo hesitated, then smiled. "No reason. "
But his eyes stayed on zia.
