Chapter 4 - Chapter-4 :Familiar Smiles

Zia Sat in the seat of the car,her fingers loosely wrapped around her phone as the city passed by outside the window. The evening light painted everything in soft gold, but her mind felt oddly dull.

"Zia ,you're quiet today ."

She turned toward the voice beside her.Jason---her boyfriend, Sat comfortable, one arm resting behind her seat, confidence written all over his face.He always looked put together. Too perfect. Too certain.

"I'm fine." She replied with a small smile. It came easily.it always did.

Jason talked about his day, about people zia barely remembered, about plans he had already decided for both of them.she nodded at the right moments, laughed when expected. Anyone watching would think they were a perfect couple.

But somewhere between his words, her thoughts drifted.

A laugh echoed in her mind ---carefree genuine. Christopher.

She frowned slightly at herself and pushed the thought away.

The car stopped in front of her house, large and elegant, standing proudly like it always had.Jason stepped out first ,Opening her door with practiced ease .

"I'll call you later,"he said ,leaning in a little closer than necessary ."Don't disappear. "

Zia smiled again.

"I won't. "

But the moment she walked inside, that smile faded.

Her house was alive with sound----maids moving around, her father's voice coming from the study, the distance ring of a phone. Everything felt busy.Important .And yet...empty in a strange way.

"Zia,you're home ?"

Her mother glanced up briefly, already distracted by something else .

"Dinner will be late .your father has guests."

Zia nodded. She was used to it.

She climbed the stairs to her room, closed the Door behind her,and leaned against it for a second longer than usual .the silence wrapped around her, calmer than the noise downstairs.

She dropped onto her bed and stared at the ceiling.

Why did she feel tired ?

At the same time ,across town, Christopher stood in the doorway of his house, shoes still on,bag hanging from one shoulder. The house felt colder than it should have.

"You're late again. "

His stepmother's voice came from the kitchen ,sharp and controlled.

"I had school, " he replied calmly.

"You always have school, "She said without looking at him."some of us manage responsibilities too."

Christopher clenched his jaw but said nothing. He walked past her, ignoring the tension that followed him like a shadow. Upstairs, he shut his room door and exhaled slowly, as if he'd been holding his breath the entire way home .

He tossed his bag aside and lay back on his bed, staring at the wall.

At school ,everything felt lighter.

Friends, laughter ,noise .

Here ,it felt like walking on broken glass .

His phone buzzed.

A group chat .Leo sending memes messages.someone planning a weekend hangout. Christopher typed a short reply, added a laughing emoji ,and locked the screen.

Then his mind betrayed him.

Grey hair, Quiet eyes, A girl who looked like she belongs everywhere and nowhere at the same time .

Zia .

He sat up suddenly, annoyed at himself.

She's just ---someone from class,"he muttered.

Back in her room,Zia opened her notebook, pretending she needed to study. The page stayed blank .her pen hovered uselessly.

She remembered the way Christopher laughed with his friends. How natural it looked. How real.

He didn't try to impress anyone.

He didn't even seem to notice.

Her phone lit up--Jason's message.

Miss me already?

Zia typed back a simple reply.

Take care.

She placed the phone aside and looked out the window. The sky was darkening now .stars slowly appearing, unaware of the quiet changes happening below.

Two different houses.

Two different lives.

Both hiding cracks beneath polished surfaces. And somewhere in between, something unnamed was beginning to shift---soft ,unnoticed, and dangerous in its silence.
