Chapter 65 - Chapter 65 — When Rain Meets Flame and Ice

Year X780 · Late Summer

Location: Fairy Tail Guild Hall & Training Yard

Split POV — Juvia · Ren · Natsu · Gray · Guild

---

The challenge started the way most things did in Fairy Tail.

Loudly.

"OI—Rain Girl!" Natsu slammed a fist into his palm, fire crackling with excitement. "Fight me!"

The guild froze for half a heartbeat—then erupted.

"Again already?!"

"Someone clear the yard!"

"Put money on it!"

"Happy, stop floating over the betting table!"

Juvia stood near the edge of the room, bluebell pendant cool against her chest. Her fingers twitched—not from fear, but anticipation.

"…Juvia accepts," she said.

Natsu grinned. "YES!"

From the bar, Mira leaned forward, worried but smiling. "Don't overdo it, okay?"

Erza crossed her arms, eyes sharp. "This will be a good test."

Ren said nothing.

He simply met Juvia's gaze and nodded once.

Breathe first.

She did.

---

Juvia vs Natsu

The training yard shimmered with heat as Natsu bounced on his heels. "No holding back!"

"…Juvia won't," she replied softly.

The bell rang.

Fire exploded forward.

Juvia moved.

Flowing Surface.

She didn't block the flames—she split them. Water curved around the fire like cupped hands, redirecting the blast into steam that hissed harmlessly into the air.

Natsu skidded to a halt. "Whoa—did you see that?!"

He laughed and charged again, fists blazing.

This time, Juvia stepped into the attack.

Turning Current.

Her arms guided the water in spirals, catching the heat and dispersing it. Steam fogged the yard, visibility dropping to nothing.

From within the mist, Natsu shouted, "HEY! That's cheating!"

Juvia smiled.

"…Juvia learned from experience."

She struck—not with force, but precision. A compressed wave knocked Natsu off balance, sending him sliding across the wet ground.

He popped back up, soaked and laughing. "That was AWESOME!"

Erza nodded. "She didn't extinguish the flames. She redirected their momentum."

Mira clasped her hands. "She's thinking."

Ren exhaled quietly.

Good. You didn't chase him.

Natsu finally stopped, hands on knees. "Okay, okay—I give! Let's do this again sometime!"

Juvia bowed slightly. "…Thank you."

The guild roared.

---

Gray's Turn

Gray had been quiet the whole time.

Too quiet.

"…My turn," he said, already stripping off his jacket.

Natsu blinked. "Huh? You're fighting too?"

Gray's eyes were focused—not angry, not jealous. Curious. Calculating.

"I want to see how your water handles ice."

Juvia's smile faded into something more serious.

"…Juvia understands."

Ren straightened slightly.

This one's different.

---

Juvia vs Gray

The air dropped ten degrees the moment the fight began.

Ice spread across the ground in sharp, deliberate patterns. Gray moved with control, freezing space rather than attacking directly.

Juvia slowed.

Don't rush.

She breathed.

Cascading Veil.

Water rose around her, thin but steady, absorbing the cold. Frost crept along its surface—but didn't break through.

Gray narrowed his eyes. "You're insulating."

He snapped his fingers—Ice-Make: Lance!

Juvia reacted instantly.

Quiet Rain — Twin Embrace.

Twin streams wrapped around her arms, catching the lance mid-flight and melting it—not with heat, but motion, breaking its structure.

The guild went silent.

Happy's jaw dropped. "Aye… that was cool."

Gray smirked. "Not bad."

He changed tactics—ice forming beneath Juvia's feet.

She slipped—

—and corrected.

Water surged from her own body, reinforcing her balance, flowing with her movement instead of against it.

Ren's fingers tightened.

She's adapting in real time.

Gray launched one final attack—wide, overwhelming.

Juvia didn't counter.

She stepped forward.

Flowing Surface.

The ice wave split, curved, and passed her on both sides, leaving her standing untouched at the center.

Silence.

Then—

"That's enough," Erza said.

Gray exhaled, a small smile on his face. "Yeah. I'm satisfied."

Juvia bowed deeply. "…Thank you for the lesson."

Guild Reactions

Chaos returned all at once.

"She stood her ground!"

"She didn't overpower them—she outplayed them!"

"Did you see her footwork?!"

"She's scary now!"

"That pendant's lucky!"

Mira rushed over, gently checking Juvia's shoulders. "You okay?"

"…Juvia feels light," she admitted.

Erza approached next. "Your control is impressive. One tip—against multiple enemies, conserve your flow. Don't widen it too much."

Juvia nodded seriously. "…Juvia will remember."

Gray added, "Against ice users—keep moving. You did that well."

Natsu grinned. "Next time I'm bringing more fire!"

---

Ren

Ren hadn't said a word through any of it.

He waited until the crowd thinned, until the noise softened back into familiar guild hum.

Juvia approached him, a little hesitant. "…Ren?"

He smiled—not wide, not loud. Just warm.

"You did great," he said simply.

Her shoulders loosened like a knot finally undone.

"…Juvia was afraid," she admitted. "…But it didn't control her."

"That's the point," he replied. "Fear doesn't go away. You just learn where to put it."

She looked at him then—not as a teacher, not as a guide.

As Ren.

"…Thank you," she said softly. "…For staying."

He tapped the bluebell pendant lightly with one finger. "You weren't alone."

Something quiet settled between them—not heavy, not sharp.

Growing.

From the bar, Mira watched with a knowing smile. Erza noticed too—but said nothing.

Some bonds didn't need words.

As the rain outside Magnolia eased into a gentle drizzle, Juvia stood taller than she ever had before.

The guild had seen her strength.

But more importantly—

She had.
