Chapter 64 - Chapter 64 — Ripples in Still Water

Year X780 · Late Summer

Location: Fairy Tail Guild Hall & Training Grounds

Ren (15) · Juvia (13)

---

Rumors in Fairy Tail never whispered.

They bounced.

Juvia felt it the moment she walked in—glances that lingered a second longer, smiles that carried curiosity instead of pity, voices lowering just enough to notice.

"…That's the rain girl, right?"

"…She did three jobs this week."

"…No damage reports."

"…She walks like she belongs."

Juvia pretended not to hear.

She failed.

Her shoulders tightened, then slowly relaxed as she remembered Ren's voice: Breathe first. Then decide.

She did.

The rain inside her didn't surge. It settled.

At the bar, Mira leaned over with a warm smile. "You've been busy."

"…Juvia likes being useful," she replied carefully.

Erza passed behind her, pausing just long enough to say, "Consistency is strength."

Juvia blinked. Praise from Erza landed heavier than applause.

Across the hall, Ren noticed the way Juvia's posture changed—straighter, steadier. And the way others noticed that.

Attention brings friction, he thought. And friction brings choice.

---

That afternoon, Juvia found him outside.

Ren was practicing alone, wooden sword moving in precise arcs, breath steady—sun-warm and controlled. She waited until he finished a form before speaking.

"…Ren."

He turned, smiling easily. "What's up?"

Juvia hesitated, then bowed slightly. "…Juvia would like help."

His smile softened. "With?"

"…Attacks," she admitted. "…Juvia can control the rain now. But when it comes to fighting… Juvia reacts. She wants to choose."

Ren considered her for a moment—then nodded. "Alright. Training ground."

---

They stood ankle-deep in a shallow pool near the trees, afternoon light dappling the water.

"No sword," Ren said, setting his practice blade aside. "Your body is your medium."

Juvia looked down at her hands. "…Juvia uses water around her."

"Today," Ren said gently, "you use water with you."

He demonstrated slowly, arms moving in smooth, circular paths. His breathing changed—measured, constant.

"Water Breathing," he explained. "Not about force. About flow. We'll adapt it."

He took a stance, feet grounded. "Form One—Flowing Surface."

Ren swept his arm; water followed like silk, redirecting the pool's current rather than breaking it.

"Your turn," he said.

Juvia inhaled.

Slow.

Even.

She mirrored the motion—tentative at first. The water responded late, then sooner, then with her. A gentle arc formed, hugging her forearm.

"…It listens," she whispered.

Ren nodded. "Because you're not shouting at it."

They continued.

"Form Two—Cascading Veil," Ren said, stepping through a movement that raised water into a thin, protective curtain. "Defense first."

Juvia tried. The veil formed—too thick—then collapsed.

She frowned. "…Juvia pushed."

"Again," Ren said. "Less want. More trust."

She breathed. The veil reformed—light, steady. It held.

Her eyes widened. "…It stayed."

"Good," he smiled. "Form Three—Turning Current."

Ren rotated his torso, guiding water into a spiraling redirection. "For counters. Use your arms like channels."

Juvia followed—arms flowing, water wrapping and releasing. When a thrown stone skimmed toward her, the current caught it and sent it aside with a splash.

She laughed—surprised and bright.

From the sidelines, Happy floated, mouth open. "Aye… she's scary now."

Gray watched quietly, arms crossed. "…No. She's precise."

Erza nodded once. "That's harder."

---

They paused as the sun dipped lower.

Juvia sat at the edge, feet in the pool, breathing still steady. "…Ren," she said softly. "…People are watching."

"I know."

"…Juvia feels it." She pressed a hand to her chest. "…It makes the rain restless."

Ren crouched beside her. "Attention doesn't decide who you are," he said. "Your choices do."

She studied him. "…Does it ever bother you?"

He thought of Erza's pendant, Mira's bracelet. Of eyes following him, expectations growing.

"Sometimes," he admitted. "That's why we train."

She smiled faintly. "…Then Juvia will train harder."

---

Over the next days, whispers grew louder.

"Did you see that water shield?"

"She redirected magic without touching it."

"Ren's teaching her breathing—no wonder."

Juvia felt the tension—not hostile, but curious. Testing.

She kept going.

Morning runs. Afternoon forms. Evening missions—clean, controlled, calm.

Ren watched from a distance more often now, correcting only when asked. Letting her stand on her own.

One evening, after training, she surprised him.

"…Ren," she said, eyes glinting with mischief. "…Juvia thinks she has a form."

"Oh?"

She stepped into the pool, raised both arms, and breathed.

The water gathered—not rushing, not heavy—then split into twin streams that flowed along her arms like living ribbons.

"…Quiet Rain — Twin Embrace," she said, then redirected the streams outward, knocking aside two incoming practice bolts with graceful ease.

Ren blinked—then laughed. "You named it already?"

"…Juvia wanted to," she said shyly. "…Is that wrong?"

"It's perfect," he replied. "It fits you."

From the guild steps, Mira clapped softly. Erza watched with a thoughtful gaze.

Quiet tensions, Ren realized, aren't bad.

They mean growth.

That night, as the rain fell gently over Magnolia—controlled, chosen—Juvia stood beneath it without flinching.

The ripples had begun.

And the water was learning how to move on its own.
