Chapter 88 - Chapter 88: When the Mask Comes Off

Sam finally remembered where he had heard that voice before.

That disgusting face surfaced in his mind, making him feel genuinely nauseated.

He hadn't expected Yuko to be this persistent. She had even tracked him down to the Rainbow Gym. It was obvious now that she had been paying close attention to him.

A cold smile appeared on Sam's face as he stood up and walked outside.

"Since Miss Erika is here, let me handle this," Sam said calmly.

After spending several days with him, Erika could immediately sense the suppressed anger beneath Sam's smile.

She stepped aside and made a polite gesture, clearly leaving the matter to him. Her patience toward her so-called cousin had clearly reached its limit.

Normally, when Yuko caused trouble elsewhere, Erika followed the principle of out of sight, out of mind. But now, Yuko had crossed the line by coming here to harass her friend.

If Erika could tolerate even this, then she wouldn't be Erika.

Behind her gentle exterior lay a resolute and unyielding heart.

"So you finally crawled out," Yuko sneered viciously. "Trash that hides behind women."

Sam glanced at Erika, slightly confused about the exact relationship between the two.

"She's… technically a relative," Erika said helplessly. "You could barely call her my sister."

That single sentence told Sam everything he needed to know.

Still, it was hard to believe that someone so foul-mouthed, greedy, and shameless could be related to Erika at all.

Stealing other people's Pokémon, spitting insults nonstop—honestly, Sam thought she'd fit right in with Team Rocket. With talent like that, she might even rise quickly in their ranks.

"Hmph. If you know what's good for you, hand over your Lapras," Yuko threatened coldly. "Otherwise, don't blame me for being rude."

Erika was sharp enough to understand everything from just that sentence. Her expression darkened instantly.

She had once believed Yuko was merely domineering and spoiled, relying on the family name to bully others. She never imagined that Yuko would dare to openly attempt Pokémon theft.

There was no way this was her first time.

"Oh, you want my Lapras?" Sam chuckled softly. "No problem. But do you really think you're capable of taking it?"

The smile on Sam's face widened, but it carried no warmth.

"Hmph. You'll find out soon enough," Yuko sneered. "Come out—Exeggutor!"

A flash of red light erupted.

A Pokémon resembling a coconut tree, with three dull, expressionless faces, appeared in front of Sam.

Detective Eye activated.

[Pokémon]: Exeggutor

[Type]: Grass / Psychic

[Strength]: Mid-level Gym

[Potential]: Gym

So that's what she's relying on, Sam thought.

A mid-level Exeggutor—most likely borrowed from one of her elders.

The moment Erika saw the Pokémon, she had already sentenced Yuko to disaster in her heart.

Exeggutor was notorious for its unstable temperament. Letting someone like Yuko, who wasn't even its original Trainer, command it was no different from handing a child a loaded bomb.

Clearly, Erika had been far too lenient with certain members of her family.

After the Team Rocket matter is settled, she decided, it's time to clean house.

Suddenly, Yuko pointed straight at Sam and screamed, "Exeggutor—use Confusion on him!"

At that moment, Erika finally understood.

This girl wasn't just spoiled.

She harbored genuine malice—something far darker than ordinary arrogance.

In other words, Yuko was a natural villain.

Boom!

Just as Confusion was about to strike Sam, a shadow burst forth.

Gengar emerged from its Poké Ball, launching a Shadow Ball that shattered the psychic attack instantly.

Sam slowly licked his lips.

He hadn't felt this angry in a very long time.

The last time… was probably when he encountered poachers at Mt. Moon.

What a shame.

This wasn't the wilderness.

Even though he couldn't kill her, Sam had no intention of letting this go lightly.

"Gengar—Shadow Ball. Target Exeggutor."

Unlike Yuko, Sam didn't attack the Trainer directly.

Not because he respected Alliance rules.

But because he preferred to save the best part for last.

Gengar, perfectly in sync with Sam's emotions, sensed his fury and let out an excited laugh.

"Kou jie~ kou jie~!"

It had been a long time since it could truly enjoy itself.

Rather than finishing Exeggutor immediately, Gengar decided to play.

Its body vanished, then reappeared behind Exeggutor, extending its tongue and slowly licking the rightmost face, leaving behind a trail of sticky saliva.

"~Coco… coco…!"

Enraged, Exeggutor's leafy crown began to glow white.

Bomb Attack.

White orbs scattered wildly across the battlefield as Exeggutor attempted to annihilate Gengar with a large-scale attack.

"Kou jie~ kou jie~!"

Gengar grinned widely, phasing in and out of existence, dodging each explosion at the very last moment.

Again and again.

At this point, even Exeggutor should have realized it was being toyed with.

"Exeggutor! What are you doing? Kill that Gengar already!" Yuko shouted impatiently from the sidelines.

Already furious from Gengar's harassment, Exeggutor grew even angrier upon hearing Yuko's shrill commands.

Fine, it decided.

After I deal with this annoying ghost… you're next.
