Chapter 2 - Tools

Made from wheat milled by villagers, David suspected that the genetic sequence of this wheat was closer to humans than most organisms on this planet.

'Damn, I'm hungry'

The craving for food made David feel his pulsating life once again.

No wonder they say food soothes the soul.

The bewilderment of transmigrating into an unfamiliar world and the fear of the future were alleviated, more or less.

David put the bread into his backpack. His hunger bar had only dropped by two segments so far, and the bread could restore three. David chose to eat sparingly.

He then looked at the apple next to it, an important material for crafting a golden apple, and also put it into his backpack.

Next were the wooden pickaxe and stone axe. Their shapes vaguely resembled those in Minecraft, but the materials and details looked like they had a layer of ultra-high-definition textures.

"RTX-ON!" David chuckled.

'First, I'll dig some stone in this underground cave to upgrade this shabby wooden pickaxe to a stone pickaxe.'

David shook his head, shaking out the fear and those distant, unrealistic thoughts, and began to focus on the task at hand.

He deliberately waited for a while until the commotion above completely disappeared. David picked up the wooden pickaxe he got from the bonus chest and hammered it into the stone wall.

A dull thud echoed in the cave, and countless spiderweb-like cracks spread across the surface of the stone wall struck by the wooden pickaxe.

Surprisingly easy, David looked at his hands in astonishment.

His digging movements were very fluid, whether it was the swing of his arms or the force from his waist and abdomen, in a word, standard.

More importantly, after several swings just now, he didn't even breathe heavily, only his hunger bar flickered a few times.

With a thought, David switched to his fist and punched the stone wall with all his might.

Bang, the cracks on the stone wall in front of him widened a bit, but his hand was perfectly fine, except for some rock dust.

His physical constitution was exceptionally good. Although not as exaggerated as the original block people who could carry 36 × 64 one-cubic-meter gold blocks, it far exceeded that of ordinary people.

The chances of surviving in this universe were greater. David clenched his fists, feeling the endless strength in his body, and once again swung the wooden pickaxe, continuing to dig.

One, two, three blocks... After the stone wall was mined, it left a perfectly square cubic void, exactly like in Minecraft.

In the center of the void, a small floating block appeared, which David absorbed into his backpack.

[Cadian Cobblestone]

[Cadian Cobblestone appears as a muted, dusty tan-grey rock, its surface chipped and scarred as if shaped more by artillery shockwaves than by pickaxes. Faint warm undertones give it a sun-baked, militaristic feel—perfect for fortresses that look like they've survived a thousand sieges.]

David broke down the logs into planks and skillfully made a Crafting Table and sticks.

He then placed two sticks and three [Cadian Cobblestone] on the Crafting Table.

The materials on the Crafting Table were drawn together by an unseen force, then transformed and reorganized.

A brand new tool lay quietly there.

Minecraft crafting, no matter how many times he saw it, still felt incredible.

David, who witnessed the entire process, couldn't help but exclaim.

Only raw materials are needed to skip the process and obtain the finished product. In a sense, this is even better than some STC templates.

Those tech priests would probably go completely insane if they saw this.

David reached out and gripped the pickaxe handle. The stone pickaxe was noticeably heavier, making it feel more stable to hold.

As he weighed the new tool, text appeared in the chat box in the lower-left corner of his vision.

[Loading mod...]

Then a flood of garbled characters filled the screen.

[First item crafted, Mod: Just Enough Items, enabled]

Mod? David was stunned at first, then a surge of pleasant surprise washed over him. This was good news.

Right off the bat, it's the heavyweight JEI. This mod is well-known, a must-have for modpacks.

Not only can it query crafting recipes, but more importantly, it can display the uses of items, making it an omniscient encyclopedia.

David held a freshly dug raw stone in his hand and tried to query it.

A transparent page unfolded before his eyes, and a nine-grid display showed various stone item recipes.

David flipped through them; they were all old friends. He could recite these most common recipes from memory.

Crackling, the torches placed around the bonus chest burned.

Illuminated by the torchlight, David picked up the stone pickaxe, turned to face the stone wall he had just mined, exerted force with both arms, and swung the stone pickaxe high before bringing it down.

Clang!

The digging speed was much faster. David struck while the iron was hot, following suit to craft a furnace and a stone sword.

He also dug some extra stone, just in case.

When the stone in his backpack accumulated to half a stack, a stone distinctly different from the surrounding ones was exposed in the center of the large pit he had dug.

It was a stone much darker in color than the surrounding rock, somewhat resembling obsidian.

David tentatively struck the black stone a few times.

The sound of metal striking stone rang out, and the recoil traveled up the pickaxe handle, numbing his tiger's mouth.

This black stone was extremely hard. His pickaxe's level wasn't high enough, and it only left a few almost invisible cracks.

David dug around the black stone and found that it was terrifyingly large.

Looking at the stone, David immediately thought of the Cadian Pylons.

On the planet Cadia, there stood 5,810 mysterious pylons, which were also composed of unknown, entirely black stone.

David weighed the pros and cons, looking at his remaining 6 hunger points, and chose to give up further excavation. He put away his stone pickaxe, climbed out of the large pit he had dug, and returned to the tunnel.

His gaze swept over the scattered fuel buckets on the ground. David tried to hit one with his stone pickaxe.

A promethium bucket dropped.

The icon style resembled the iron bucket in Minecraft, but the model was covered with rust marks.

It could be used to hold water and lava. David dug 5 more, put the promethium buckets into his backpack, and also took the Bonus Chest and the four torches next to it.

David held a torch and searched for an exit along the tunnel.

The surrounding scenery was monotonous, just rusty buckets, with no trace of coal or iron ore.

David walked for a while, but still saw no end, so he stopped.

He decided to forcibly open a vertical passage.

David placed stone blocks under his feet, stacking them up one by one, digging upwards.

Every time he dug away a block above with his stone pickaxe, he immediately replaced it with one under his feet.

Strangely enough, the stones above, after losing their support, remained suspended and did not collapse.

Thus, in silence, David arduously climbed upwards, one block at a time.

From Cadian cobblestone to dirt blocks, David felt the surface getting closer.

Finally, after digging away the last dirt block, David saw the light of day again.
