They left the chamber before the next cycle fully turned.
No packs. No excess. Only what they carried in their hands and the quiet they carried in their bones. The black-glass plain stretched ahead under a sky that had grown curiously still—the drifting stars slowed, as if reluctant to witness what came next. The veins of light underfoot pointed in a single direction, a subtle current pulling them toward the deeper Between.
Kael set a pace that allowed no conversation. Nyx moved like a second shadow at the rear, eyes never still. Seris walked slightly apart, the blue flame of the chamber reduced to a single steady ember that hovered near their shoulder, a borrowed piece of home.
Lior kept the silver resonance banked so tightly it felt like a held breath. The spent fragment rested against his chest, cool and silent, yet every so often it seemed to lean toward the path they followed, as though it remembered the road.
The landscape changed by degrees. The familiar ruins thinned. In their place rose structures that looked less built than grown—spires of dark crystal that had never known tools, arches that curved according to laws older than geometry. The air thickened with a pressure that was not hostility, only immense age.
At the edge of a vast, shallow basin the current beneath the glass stopped.
In the center of the basin stood a single threshold: two pillars of absolute black joined by a lintel that seemed to drink the starlight. No door filled the space between them. Only a vertical sheet of deeper darkness, motionless and waiting.
Seris halted. "This is the place. The First Threshold. Here the boundaries were first argued into existence. Here the cost of continuance has always been weighed."
Nyx's voice was uncharacteristically quiet. "Anyone else feel like the furniture is about to deliver a final exam?"
Kael planted his spear. "We go together or not at all."
Lior stepped forward until he stood at the edge of the basin. The silver quiet rose of its own accord, not in challenge but in acknowledgment. The sheet of darkness between the pillars rippled once, like water touched by a single finger.
A presence gathered—vast, cool, and exact.
*You have been summoned to account for the altered sum.*
Lior did not bow. He did not raise a defense. He simply answered, the way the quiet had taught him.
"I am here."
*Then enter.*
The darkness between the pillars thinned, becoming a passage.
Kael looked at Lior. "Whatever happens inside, do not spend yourself the old way. That path is closed to you now."
Nyx offered a razor-thin smile. "Try not to rewrite the universe too hard. Some of us still live here."
Seris's ember-flame brightened for a moment. "We will hold the threshold. The weighing is yours alone."
Lior nodded once. Then he walked into the dark.
