Bella's POV

Sunlight stabbed through my eyelids, forcing me awake. My neck felt like someone had twisted it with pliers, and every muscle in my body screamed in protest. "God, I feel like I got hit by a truck," I groaned, trying to figure out where the hell I was.

The walls around us were rough and splintered, the air thick with the smell of rotting wood and mildew. Then it all came rushing back. We were still hiding in that tiny shack we'd crawled into during our desperate escape. The memory of running through the darkness, branches tearing at our clothes, made my chest tighten.

But we were alive. The morning light meant we'd survived the night.

I felt something heavy against my arm and looked down to see Fiona's head resting on my shoulder. She looked like hell. Her hair was matted with dirt and sweat, streaks of dried tears cutting through the grime on her face. But she was breathing, and that was all that mattered right now.
