Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – The Weakest of All

Everyone said I would die.

Everyone said I was worthless.

Everyone… was right—until today.

I'm Aric Veyra. Eighteen years old, the weakest trainee in the entire guild of Veyra's Wardens. Weakest in strength, weakest in skill, weakest in survival instinct. I knew my place—at the bottom, invisible, and ignored.

But the world has a funny way of proving you wrong.

The forest clearing ahead was silent. Too silent. The kind of quiet that made your heart pound in your ears. The other trainees were scattered along the edges, weapons drawn, eyes wide with fear—or maybe pity. I couldn't tell. I didn't care. Today, I had no choice. Survival wasn't optional.

A low, rumbling growl shattered the silence. The ground trembled beneath my feet. From the shadows between the ancient trees, it emerged.

A monster. Not just any monster. Something straight out of nightmare: twelve jagged limbs, eyes like molten rubies, scales that shimmered black and silver, and teeth long enough to pierce armor with ease. Its presence alone made the air heavy, like breathing through water.

The trainees froze. Every instinct in their bodies screamed "Run!" Every sword they held quivered as if sensing the inevitable.

I knelt, feeling my knees buckle. "This is it…" I muttered.

And then, as if the world decided to give me one last chance, a voice—cold, mechanical, and eerily calm—echoed inside my head.

[System Detected: Extreme Survival Condition]

[Activation Possible: Yes]

I froze. My hands shook. What the hell…?

[Welcome, Survivor. Your path begins now.]

A pulse ran through my veins. Power? Knowledge? I didn't know, and yet I could feel it. Sharp, dangerous, and intoxicating. The monster roared and lunged, faster than thought, faster than fear itself.

I dove aside instinctively. Pain flared across my shoulder where a claw grazed me. My vision blurred. I collapsed onto the forest floor, expecting death.

[Skill Unlocked: Adaptive Combat]

[Effect: Your strength and reflexes improve with each life-threatening encounter. Caution: Every choice has cost.]

The words seared into my mind. The system… it wasn't a gift. It was a challenge. A contract. A warning.

I struggled to my feet, shaking, blood dripping, chest burning—but alive. For the first time, I didn't feel weak. I didn't feel like the weakest of all.

I squared my shoulders. The monster circled me, teeth bared, and I realized something: it wasn't here just to kill. It was testing me. Prodding me. Challenging me to survive.

I lunged. Not with courage, not with hope, but with instinct sharpened by sheer desperation. Every movement felt faster, cleaner, sharper. The system guided me subtly, whispering tactics I didn't consciously know.

One claw, two claws, I dodged. One slash, countered. My heart raced. Sweat stung my eyes. Fear and exhilaration burned together.

The monster roared again. I jumped back, feeling the earth shudder beneath me. And then… I saw it. A glimmer of something in its eye—a faint red glow that pulsed when it noticed me. Recognition? Intelligence? Whatever it was, it changed everything. This was no mindless beast. This was a predator—and I was not prey.

[Extreme Survival Condition Complete: Phase 1]

[Reward Pending… Hidden]

I collapsed, gasping for air. Around me, the trainees stared, mouths agape. They had expected failure. Expected death. And yet… I was alive.

Alive. Changed. Hungry.

Because this was only the beginning.

I didn't know it yet, but the system had chosen me for a reason. Every fight, every danger, every painful decision would shape me. Strength came with cost, survival with consequence, and power… with responsibility.

Far above, hidden in the canopy, a shadow watched. Silent. Immense. Ancient. It knew I had awakened the system. And it waited.

I wiped blood from my face and whispered to myself:

"Let them call me weak. Let them doubt me. I'll show them… I'll survive. And when I do… I'll rewrite fate itself."

The forest held its breath.

And so did I.
