With the twins settling their excitement down, Kiana shifted back into focus.
"Alright… 'Partner,' Since we're officially a team... Would you mind telling us why exactly did you break into this apartment? Does it have something to do with our mother's killer?"
"No? I just came to check on a friend."
"Excuse me?" Kiana stared at him deadpan. She slowly gestured down toward the floor near the entryway, where the metal door latch lay neatly sliced. "You 'check on friends' by cutting through their locks?"
"When they look like walking corpses the last time I saw them and don't show up to work? Yeah. That's my standard wellness check."
"What do you mean?"
He went on to explain running into Darwin while on his date with Diana the previous night. Kurt described Darwin's alarming physical state in detail – his sunken cheeks, the dark circles around his hollow eyes, his unusually pale skin, the slight trembling his body emits, and his overall weakened physical condition.
