Chapter 9 - The Man She Likes Is Chasing You?

With those two casual sentences, cracks appeared in Yu Wan's mask of pride. She snorted coldly, "Still as sharp-tongued as ever."

Miao Ying, who was standing to the side and eating the gossip up, understood and couldn't help but giggle.

So, it's a love rival...

"Since you all know each other, there's no need for me to introduce you again. Hurry up and go eat, what time is it anyway?"

Miao Ying tried to smooth things over, attempting to end the conversation.

But Yu Wan was unwilling to let it go. She crossed her arms and walked forward, sizing Qiao Yimian up and down, then rolled her eyes in disdain.

"But... no matter how excellent you are, you still ended up stuck in that small, broken unit, the Chu City Evening News? It's a real waste of all those years competing with me for scholarships."

Qiao Yimian didn't take it seriously, smiling and agreeing, "Yes, what a pity. Who told me I don't have any powerful relatives?"

Yu Wan's eyes widened immediately, her voice rising several degrees, "What nonsense are you talking about! I got in here based on my own ability! Don't you try to frame me!"

Qiao Yimian shrugged indifferently, "Oh, then you're really capable, I admire you."

After saying that, she smiled thoughtfully and went straight back to her workstation.

"You!" Yu Wan was so angry that she bit her red lip, her meticulously drawn eyebrows and eyes tinged with a bit of anger, like an angry cat whose tail had been stepped on.

Meng Changfeng, afraid that the two would argue again, quickly ended the topic and greeted Yu Wan to go out for dinner.

"Stop reminiscing, let's go eat quickly! I'm starving!"

Yu Wan snorted in annoyance and stormed out of the office.

The surroundings immediately quieted, and Qiao Yimian slowly exhaled.

During university, she and Yu Wan had always been at odds.

At first, it was a competition for exam rankings and scholarships. Later, it was a fight for club president and student union cadre positions, and eventually it escalated to competing over men…

Of course, it was Yu Wan who insisted on competing with her over men; she would have gladly given them up.

In their senior year, Linchuan Television Station came to their school to recruit interns, and she and Yu Wan both applied.

However, there was only one spot left.

They, along with the other students who applied, took a written exam and went through an interview. She got first place in both.

Everyone thought the position was hers, but the result was that Yu Wan was chosen.

The reason the television station gave was simple: Yu Wan had done live streams before, and her account had over five hundred followers.

Qiao Yimian believed it at the time, and although she was unwilling, she didn't complain.

It wasn't until much later, when she heard Shi Yan say that Yu Wan's aunt's husband was the deputy director of the television station, that she realized the other party had specifically requested Yu Wan for the internship.

Then she finally understood.

After the internship ended, Yu Wan naturally stayed at Linchuan Television Station.

And she, second best, went to the Chu City Evening News.

It had been two years since they last met, but Qiao Yimian didn't know that Yu Wan was also in the news center.

It seemed that for the next month, she would inevitably have to continue sparring with this arrogant peacock.

Miao Ying, sitting in her swivel chair, scooted closer to Qiao Yimian, unable to resist gossiping.

"You two are really rivals, aren't you? The man she likes is chasing you? Don't blame me for being nosy, it's just that it's the first time I've seen 'Yu the Beauty' get shut down like that, it's really rare! So funny!"

Qiao Yimian smiled helplessly, not denying it.

Weren't they rivals? The man Yu Wan was desperately pursuing was Shi Yan.

Miao Ying tilted her head, carefully examining Qiao Yimian's delicate profile, and couldn't help but sigh:

"It seems that man's got good taste. If I were a man, I'd know who to chase too. But I have to warn you, stay away from Yu Wan. Her uncle is the deputy director, and he usually throws his weight around in the station, everyone has to give her some face."

"Yeah, I know." Qiao Yimian knew Miao Ying meant well and nodded with a smile.

All afternoon, Qiao Yimian was busy editing her manuscript, directly ignoring the cold snort Yu Wan deliberately made as she passed by.

Although Yu Wan and Miao Ying were at each other's throats in school, never giving an inch and always competing, Yu Wan was nothing more than a proud peacock with a sharp tongue. The simplest way to deal with her was to crush her and ignore her.

Qiao Yimian was well-versed in this tactic and completely disregarded her.

As the workday drew to a close, she finally finished sorting through all the manuscripts.

She was discussing filming techniques with Meng Changfeng when she suddenly heard someone shout from the doorway:

"The Governor will be coming to the news center to inspect and offer condolences! Everyone, get ready quickly!"

Only then did Qiao Yimian remember the "big shot" that Miao Ying had mentioned at the cafeteria during lunch. It turned out to be the Governor of the Beijiang Region?

She had heard of this big shot before.

He came from a powerful family in Jing City, but was thrown into the toughest and most tiring border military region when he was young. He had achieved outstanding accomplishments over the years and earned a first-class merit award through his own abilities.

With strength in her grasp, crowned with glory, and backed by a powerful family, the path ahead should have been smooth sailing. Instead, she was suddenly sent to the Beijiang Region, the most economically backward area in the country, and appointed as its Governor.

The reason behind this was something she, a mere reporter, couldn't fathom.

And the information she possessed was all she could know.

The person's identity and background, even their appearance, were unknown to ordinary people.

Unsurprisingly, her colleagues were as surprised as she was.

A few of them began whispering amongst themselves: "The Governor just took office, and they're already coming here to inspect and offer comfort. Seems like they value the television station!"

"Well, what did you expect? The television station is the primary window for news propaganda, wouldn't they value it?"

"Don't flatter yourself! Primary window? We're a sunset industry, barely surviving on advertising revenue every day. If anything, we should be the ones valuing our advertising sponsors."

"Sunset industry? I think it's almost out of afterglow..."

Song Nanxing heard the murmurs of a few seniors and couldn't help but comfort them, "Don't be so negative. We are, after all, news people with feelings and beliefs!"

"Feelings? Come on, you can't eat with feelings." A slightly older reporter patted Song Nanxing on the shoulder,

"Young man, you've just started, so it's inevitable that you still have a lot of enthusiasm. Your brothers all came from where you are now. Back then, we risked our lives to get the first release and exclusive scoops. We wrote thousands of words with great passion. The result? The leader looked at it and his lips met: 'Involved in sensitive issues, not to be released for the time being...' I guarantee you'll have to re-evaluate your career and ideals."

Song Nanxing scratched his hair, a little confused.

Qiao Yimian was far away and vaguely heard a few sentences, shaking her head helplessly.

Although what they said was a bit negative, it was indeed the current situation in many places.

Amidst this hubbub of discussion, several steady and powerful footsteps sounded outside the door.

Everyone immediately stopped their complaints and turned their attention to the door.
