Chapter 13 - It Warms the Heart to Hear It

"Don't listen to her nonsense!" Shi Yan anxiously defended himself. "She's just jealous of you and trying to create misunderstandings between us! She's been doing this for years; you know that!"

Qiao Yimian stared intently into his eyes for a few seconds before looking away.

She didn't know if he was lying, but it didn't matter anymore.

"Forget it. Regardless, it won't change today's outcome. I have to go back and work overtime. I'm leaving."

"Yimian!" Shi Yan tried to reach for her again, but Qiao Yimian brushed him off, his face immediately turning cold.

"Shi Yan, don't make me hit you in front of everyone!"

She had never spoken to him so harshly. In fact, she was usually amiable to everyone.

Even Yu Wan, who had jumped around in front of her back then, she only used words to argue with her, then crushed her with her abilities. She never laid a hand on her, nor did she make things too embarrassing.

Now she was threatening him like this. She must be really angry, right?

Shi Yan felt both guilty and distressed. He stood there, looking aggrieved, but didn't touch her again.

Just then, Qiao Yimian's gaze swept across the side of the road, and she frowned. "Hurry up and move the car."

Shi Yan was puzzled. He followed her gaze and saw a tow truck preparing to haul away his flashy sports car.

"Huh?" He widened his eyes and hurried over there.

Qiao Yimian looked at the yellow grid lines on the ground and sighed silently.

This spot happened to be at the entrance and exit of the underground parking garage, and not far away was a bus stop. The traffic was already heavy, and it was no wonder the car was about to be towed, considering he'd parked it there so carelessly.

They had been arguing for so long, no one had paid any attention to the situation on the side of the road. They didn't even know when the tow truck had arrived.

Shi Yan walked a few steps away in annoyance, then suddenly remembered something and turned back to look for Qiao Yimian, only to find she was gone.

"Yimian!" He called out, but Qiao Yimian didn't even turn her head.

"Damn it!"

Shi Yan scratched his hair in frustration; troubles never came singly.

He decided to ignore the tow truck and chased after Qiao Yimian. But his phone in his pocket rang at that moment, each ring a death knell.

He took out his phone while running and glanced at the caller ID. Even though he was annoyed, he still answered impatiently.

Before he could speak, his father's furious roar filled his ears:

"Your mother heard you went to see that woman again and had a heart attack! She's in the emergency room being resuscitated, and you're not rushing back! If anything happens to her, just wait and see how I deal with you!"

The phone call ended, and Shi Yan stood frozen in place.

He clenched his phone, watching Qiao Yimian's retreating figure. His steps, however, became increasingly heavy, finally coming to a halt.

It felt as though a heavy hammer had struck his chest, and a wave of pain washed over him, making each breath difficult.

His arm slowly dropped, and the beep beep beep of the disconnected call came from the receiver, gradually merging with the cold air of the fleeing winter, settling deep in his mind and buzzing.

Shi Yan gritted his teeth, a battle raging within him. Finally, he turned abruptly and strode away.

For three consecutive days, Qiao Yimian was at the station editing scripts. Her foot injury had almost healed, and she could walk normally without any issues.

Just before the end of her shift, she received a call from an unknown number. The caller said that Shi Yan had entrusted him to handle the illegal parking issue. The car had now been retrieved, but they couldn't reach Shi Yan. Fortunately, he had left Qiao Yimian's number as an emergency contact.

The person she had hired looked a little troubled. "Miss, should I drive this car over to you? It's not really ideal for it to keep sitting here!"

Qiao Yimian gave the person Jiang Mei's phone number. "Call her."

A few minutes later, the person called back again. "Miss, her phone isn't going through either. You know them, right? Could you keep the car here for now? Wait until you can get in touch with them, and then have them come get it? I still have a lot of work to do, and I've been dealing with this car for several days now..."

Qiao Yimian sighed inwardly and had no choice but to give the hotel address. "Okay, drive it here. Leave the car keys at the front desk and tell him yourself."

After hanging up the phone, she thought for a moment and still sent Shi Yan a text message and the hotel location.

[The car is here. Remember to come get it. Also, I'm not your emergency contact. Don't look for me again.]

Unfortunately, the person who usually replied to her messages almost instantly was now as silent as the grave, with no reply at all.

Qiao Yimian was actually quite surprised. This wasn't like Shi Yan at all.

However, she didn't think much of it. At least he wasn't bothering her anymore, and letting things fade away like this was fine.

Qiao Yimian spent several days in a whirlwind of activity.

Early in the morning, she'd go to the station, accompany the cameraman on interviews. If things went smoothly, she could be back before noon. In the afternoon, she'd write scripts, edit videos, organize articles from other reporters, and track submissions. She was essentially doing several jobs at once.

Miao Ying saw that she had thrown herself into work so quickly and couldn't help but give her a thumbs up.

"You're really something. Filming, interviewing, on-camera work, editing, writing scripts – you can do it all. You're a true all-media, multi-skilled talent."

Qiao Yimian smiled. Before she could say anything, Song Nanxing popped his head over and chimed in:

"All-media talent, to put it bluntly, is equivalent to a workhorse who does everything."

Qiao Yimian gave him a helpless look and explained to Miao Ying, "Our newspaper is small, so everyone has to wear many hats. The division of labor isn't clear, and often one person does several jobs. You get used to it over time. But you also learn a lot of knowledge this way."

"You're young, but you're eager to learn," Meng Changfeng said with a smile, chiming in. "Qiao Yimian has been discussing shooting techniques with me whenever she has the time. It makes me feel like I lack ambition."

Qiao Yimian smiled shyly. "Teacher Meng has worked at the TV station for many years. Both his shooting techniques and interviewing experience are extremely rich. If I can learn a few things from him, then this trip won't be in vain."

Meng Changfeng was flattered by her praise and laughed heartily: "With that mouth of yours, you make people feel warm inside. You really are cut out to be a reporter."

"Oh, what are you chatting about to be so happy?" Yu Wan walked in with her nose in the air. "Tell me, let me be happy too."

Meng Changfeng deliberately teased her: "We were just saying how today's 'Beauty Yu' is supposed to be on the editing shift and doesn't need to go out for interviews, so why is she dressed so beautifully?"

Yu Wan's pretty face flushed slightly, and she gave him a look. "That's not true, when am I not beautiful?"

Meng Changfeng gave a laugh and stopped the topic there.

But Yu Wan leaned against his desk, arms crossed, and was smug.

"You all, you should praise me more. In a few days, I'll be out with the Governor on a research trip, and you won't see me for a month or so~"

Everyone was taken aback and looked at her. Someone couldn't help but ask, "We did hear some rumors that the Governor was going to research in various cities, but isn't there a propaganda team in the Governor's Office? Why would they need to pull people from the TV station?"

Yu Wan's eyes were arrogant, and she looked smug. "This time, it's the Governor's personal instruction, requesting that the TV station send a host reporter to film the entire trip for publicity."

Pointing a finger with exquisitely manicured nails at her own nose, Yu Wan raised an eyebrow proudly:

"Coincidentally, this host reporter is me!"
