Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 -- Enlightenment

Time slipped by unnoticed, and in the blink of an eye, September arrived.

Over the past few months, Bai Yue's footsteps had traversed nearly the entire globe. For an ordinary person, such a journey would have been nothing short of fantasy—but for someone who had already stepped into the Planetary Level, it was merely a matter of will.

Ever since he grasped the true direction for comprehending a Domain, Bai Yue had deliberately distanced himself from worldly affairs. He no longer rushed from goal to goal, nor did he measure each day by gains and losses. Instead, he chose to walk—quite literally—through different lands, to witness varied landscapes, climates, and rhythms of nature, letting his mind settle naturally into the world itself. Even the disturbances he encountered on Mist Island in August failed to disrupt this state of cultivation.

Most of the time, he traveled on foot, allowing his body and consciousness to fully experience the changes of Heaven and Earth. Only when crossing vast oceans did he rely on a smart fighter jet.

Unrestrained. Unforced. Following his heart.

Mount Everest—the main peak of the Himalayas and the highest point on Earth—rose 8,848 meters above sea level, straddling the border between China and Nepal.

Before the Great Nirvana Era, countless climbers had challenged this peak, seeking either glory or self-transcendence. But after civilization retreated and the Wilderness Areas expanded, this place became almost completely deserted by humans. Over the decades, monsters had claimed the surrounding regions, and only a handful of Councilors were capable of crossing such dangerous territory.

The sky was heavy and overcast. Cold winds howled like beasts, carrying snow and ice that cut like blades.

It was clearly not a day suitable for climbing.

Yet a solitary black figure moved steadily upward along the northern slope.

Bai Yue wore a simple black training suit. Snow clung to his hair, shoulders, and even his eyelashes, evidence of how long he had been ascending. His footsteps pressed firmly into the ice, neither hurried nor hesitant—each step measured, unwavering.

Behind him, footprints stretched down the mountain.

Ahead of him, only white silence.

The wind swept down relentlessly, quickly burying those footprints, just as it had buried the remains of countless explorers beneath eternal ice. On this towering snow mountain, life was scarce, and sound itself seemed frozen. Time felt suspended, leaving only Bai Yue and the path he carved toward the summit.

The wind grew fiercer. The sky darkened further.

At last—

The summit.

Standing at the highest point, Bai Yue looked into the distance. Mountain ranges rose and fell endlessly, their peaks piercing through layers of white clouds. Heaven and Earth merged into a single vast, indistinct expanse.

He sat down cross-legged at the summit.

No thoughts. No desires.

His mind was as empty and pure as the snowy world around him.

Slowly, memories surfaced—two lives' worth of experiences, joys, regrets, and burdens, long buried yet never erased.

In his previous life, he had been painfully ordinary. Born into a rural family, with no background to rely on, no exceptional talent, no dazzling future. He studied, worked, and lived quietly. After entering society, he endured the harshest years as an apprentice, barely supporting himself, before gradually earning enough to help his parents and send his two younger sisters through college. He lived frugally, denying himself even small comforts, believing that this was simply his responsibility.

Years passed unnoticed. At twenty-five, marriage became a constant topic at home. Just as he was about to resign himself to compromise, life rippled briefly—he began dating a relatively attractive girlfriend, an English major.

At first, everything was sweet and hopeful. He sincerely believed they would marry. When his income stabilized, he covered most of her expenses during her studies without hesitation.

Reality, however, was never obligated to reward sincerity.

After she graduated, he proposed. She declined, saying she wanted to focus on preparing for a government exam. He agreed. Another year passed. She succeeded, but her position was in a different city. They promised to marry once her work stabilized.

Half a year later, just before a holiday, she broke up with him.

Two days earlier, they had still been discussing names for their future children.

The reason was blunt: a male teacher at her school was pursuing her, and she had fallen for him. Later, she added another truth—his family background was too poor, and he could not give her the life she wanted.

He traveled overnight through wind and snow to see her, only to be turned away. After an entire night of waiting, she met him briefly the next day, repeating the same explanation.

That night, the man who had never touched alcohol bought bottle after bottle, trying to drown his thoughts.

Then—he arrived in this world.

Even then, he had already prepared for the worst. Afraid of sudden death from overwork, he had quietly bought insurance every year, informing his parents. If he died, at least his family would be left with something.

No regrets.

"In this life," Bai Yue murmured softly, "I walk alone—with only the Dao."

Letting go of the past, his mind felt unprecedentedly clear and complete.

The connection between his inner Heaven and Earth and the vast Universe outside had never been smoother.

His consciousness spread outward, enveloping the snow-covered summit, then extending farther, sensing every change within this space. He stood up slowly.

Climbing to the absolute peak—

I am the peak.

At that moment, it felt as if he merged with the mountains themselves, standing between Heaven and Earth, solitary and peerless.

Earth Domain — First Level. Achieved.

Immersed in the Domain, Bai Yue sensed the subtle rhythms of Heaven and Earth. Natural laws seemed to reveal fragments of themselves, as though he could glimpse the operating principles of the Universe itself.

A sharp cry echoed from afar.

A massive snow goose patrolled the sky, its aura reaching mid-level Lord. In this era, even creatures once docile had evolved ferocity, sharpening claws and fangs to survive.

Yet it failed to detect Bai Yue.

Within his Domain, his aura had seamlessly fused with Heaven and Earth itself.

With a thought, gravity descended.

The snow goose stiffened midair, as if crushed beneath an invisible mountain. Its body plummeted uncontrollably, smashing into a distant mountain ridge. The impact triggered a roaring avalanche, snow cascading downward like a collapsing sea.

The creature cried in terror.

Bai Yue withdrew the pressure.

Freed, the snow goose fled desperately into the distance.

As the avalanche continued to thunder, Bai Yue quietly examined his Domain, realizing its limits. The farther the distance, the harder precise control became. Conversely, the closer the range, the finer and more absolute his control.

A Domain was not merely for suppression—it could also be condensed around the body as protection, though such mastery required far greater refinement.

For now, this was enough.
