Chapter 28 - Assigned Martial Arts and Blossoming Friendships

I spent the rest of the class fighting against Sensei Barrett while Theodore and Asmura were too injured to get back up. With my sensitivity to pain 10 times that of regular humans, every hit made it feel as if my head was about to explode.

My nose wasn't broken, but at this point it was clogged with blood, forcing me to breathe through my mouth. After a while, the pain I felt after every hit wasn't as unbearable.

It was partly because my body had gone numb, but other than that, I felt as if my skin had gotten thicker and my bone density had increased.

By the time we were done sparring, I was a pile of mess on the floor. My entire body ached, and I was covered in bruises all over. My eyes were swollen shut from how many times I had been punched in the face.

[Danger detected! User is severely injured. Would you like to develop a skill to adapt to this irregularity?] [Y/N]

Just when I needed it the most, my adaptation skill kicked in. Without hesitation, I thought 'Yes'.

[Initialising skill creation 98%…]

[Skill created: Low-tier regeneration]

I didn't expect much since my proficiency of my demonic skill was low. I hadn't had much time to increase it lately, and it was getting increasingly harder. In the beginning, just the act of lying would cause me to gain sin points.

That wasn't the case anymore. I needed to commit more sinful acts. I could already see where this was going. I was being pushed to commit evil atrocities in the name of gaining power.

It was the law of equivalent exchange. Something cannot come from nothing. I've come across this law various times in several different textbooks.

Suddenly, it felt as if a cool breeze had washed over my body as I activated my regeneration skill. Immediately, the purple bruising all over my body began to dissipate, and the swelling over my eyes shrunk.

My burning muscles felt as if they were doused by cold water. It was honestly refreshing.

"Alright, I think I've gotten a feel for which martial arts will suit you three," Sensei Barrett said as he stood over us. "Stand up and assume your stance."

Groaning with every movement, Theodore, Asmura, and I climbed to our feet and stood with our hands behind our backs.

Sensei Barrett observed us once again before calling out each of our names.

"Asmura," he said, stopping in front of the thin girl. Asmura was breathing heavily as she openly glared at the old man. "You have a small body, but for some reason, you're surprisingly strong. Your movements are well defined. It shows a lot of practice and natural talent. Because of this, I've decided that the martial arts I will teach you will be karate, kung fu, and taekwondo."

Asmura barely reacted to the sensei's words and continued to glare at him. It felt as if she was plotting her revenge.

Sensei, on the other hand, didn't pay her hateful glare any mind and instead moved on to Theodore.

"Theodore, you have a clear size advantage against the other students. You also know how to tank a hit."

Asmura's eyebrows raised slightly when the sensei said Theodore knew how to tank a hit. As far as she remembered, Theodore spent the whole class on the ground after receiving two hits from the sensei.

'What do you mean he knows how to tank a hit? He fell after two strikes!' she must be thinking. But unlike her, I understood the meaning behind the sensei's words and agreed with him.

"I've decided I will teach you wrestling, jiu jitsu, and boxing," he continued.

Theodore nodded and gave a slight nod at the sensei's words.

Arriving in front of me, Sensei Barrett gave me a rather complicated look.

"For you, Damien, I've decided I will train you mainly in Wing Chun as your main martial art. I'll also teach you taekwondo and Muay Thai to complement your Wing Chun training."

"Yes, sensei," I said, bowing my head slightly.

Unlike what he did with the others, Sensei Barrett didn't explain why he decided to teach me those three martial arts.

And what is Wing Chun? I'll have to do a bit of research about it.

After Sensei Barrett told us which martial arts he would be teaching us, he dismissed us.

Theodore and I walked back to the changing room together. Most of my injuries had been healed, but for him it was the opposite. By the way he was walking, he looked as if he was going to keel over at any second.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

"Of course not. That goblin used us as a punching bag. Next time I see him, I will smite him."

Smite?

"I see. You don't seem too injured, though." I responded to his strange way of speaking.

"Well, that's actually because of my ability. It allows me to create a protective cloaking around myself that is invisible to the naked eye. Though it's still weak since my proficiency is only at 5.4, it was still able to absorb most of the impact from his blows," Theodore explained.

"Ah, so you were faking it. That's pretty smart, and the sensei didn't seem to notice." I said.

Theodore smiled boastfully and puffed out his chest.

"Well, it's not my first time pretending to be hurt from a punch."

Arriving at the changing room, Theodore and I changed back into our uniforms. While he was changing, I noticed the gaming console he took out of his pocket.

"Is that the Zenith gaming console?" I asked, knowing full well that it was.

Theodore turned to me with a puzzled look on his face.

"It is. Are you familiar with it?" he asked.

"I am actually. I have a gaming console of my own. Most of my free time is occupied with gaming. Are you familiar with Elf Devourer Online? It's an RPG game. The best one there is…"

"Are you kidding me!" The moment I mentioned the name of that game, Theodore's expression brightened and his eyes seemed to sparkle like brilliant jewels. "That's my favorite game!"

The two of us spent the next couple of minutes discussing Elf Devourer Online, an RPG. Eventually, we exchanged gamer IDs and even phone numbers. We left the changing room soon after, and since that was the last class of the day, we decided to go back to the dormitories.

"Yo, Damien!"

I turned around to the sound of someone calling my name, and to my surprise, it was Oliver, lightly jogging towards us.

"Where are you going?" he asked as he caught up to us.

"Theodore and I were heading back to the first-year dorms. You coming with?"

Oliver smiled smugly at my question.

"Sure, I can hang with you two losers."

The conversation between the three of us as we went back to our dorms was light-hearted. We discussed games, girls, and whatever nonsense that came to mind. Looking at us, one would think that we had been friends for years. That was how easygoing the interaction between the three of us was.

With that, my first task was completed. With Theodore and Oliver as my cover, no one would even suspect that I was a demon. I had turned myself into a student not even worth remembering. I could say that I had perfectly infiltrated the student body.
