Chapter 3 - Chapter Three

"Ok, so where am I?" After all his excitement, he decided to take a good look at his surroundings and he also found out he was nude. "Well it's a dream and a sign that I'm free!"

Vincent was in a forest with no sign of civilization or life of any form anywhere. "Oh I see. Conquering the unknown world theme, huh. Nice," he said with a short laugh.

He finally decided to walk around. His aim was to find shelter since who knows what could be lurking in the shadows of this unknown dream world.

It was the first life form Vincent was going to be seeing in this dream. Right there in front of him, about 5m away, was an animal that was supposed to look like a rabbit or maybe it was a kangaroo, Vincent was not quite sure. Its size was well over triple the size of a normal rabbit. It stood straight like a kangaroo, its teeth were much more protruded now, its fur was deep red matching the color of its eyes. There were even some cuts on its skin as evidence of a just concluded battle, and instead of the grass we are well aware to be its food, it was feasting on the flesh of another beast, one of its species for that matter.

Vincent quickly hid behind a tree, his chest rising and falling not due to fear but excitement. Yes! There really are other life forms here. I for one thought I was the only one here.

But he knew there was nothing he could do, he was still too weak to do anything to a beast even though it was at its lowest form. But as he was about to give up and wait for the beast to enjoy itself and go its way, an idea struck his mind.

Picking up a stick after searching for a while, "Yes this should do..." Looking behind, he was somewhat relieved that the beast was engrossed in its food. Since there was nothing to sharpen the stick with, he decided to break it into two, so that there was at least some spikes on its top.

All this is dependent on if the skin under that blood-soaked fur is soft, and if it isn't, well that's the end for me. But since it's just a dream, I'll wake up and I can sleep again.

This was what was in his mind as he slowly made his way south of the beast. Just how real is this dream? Everything felt so real, from the heat of the sun over his head to the shade of the trees, to the smell of blood in the air, even to his pulse and to the feeling and sound of leaves getting crushed under his feet, and he feared it might alert the beast.

He was now some distance away from the beast. I can do it! I've got nothing to lose! This world is mine to live!! He screamed in his head, jumping on his toes. And with his eyes locked onto the neck of the beast, he ran.

Running with all his might, as fast as his legs could carry him. The beast heard a sound that made it pause for a while, but instead of turning it continued eating, faster now as if it feared another one would come to take part of what it fought for. The noise was much closer this time, and wanting to scare away whatever had come to share its prize, only for it to realize the feet it was seeing now were different.

Vincent did not even give the beast any time to react, as he jumped as high as he could and with the gravitational pull, he drove the stick one into the skull and the other through its neck. Then came the blood sprouting out of both holes, dyeing his face and body red, as he watched life fade away from its eyes.

"Yes! Yes I did it!!" he shouted, throwing his fist into the air. He fell to the ground, with his body still shaking from the adrenaline and excitement. He thanked his stars and the gods for two things. First was the fact that the beast's skin was extremely soft, and that the beast was really into its food.

Resting for a while, Vincent continued his adventure. He had no idea what he was doing, he only knew he would wake up at some point. That one beast was the only life form he had come across. And after walking for a while, he came across a cave. It was weird as this cave did not lead further to the front, instead it led under the ground. To enter it, one would even have to kneel.

"Well I've got nothing to lose so..." Vincent convinced himself as he knelt down to enter the cave.

As soon as his head made way into the hole, his whole body followed. He fell into the cave and looking up at where he had come from, he realized there was no way for him to get back up. Shrugging, he began looking around in the mysterious cave he had fallen into.

The cave gave off an eerie feeling as soon as he was inside it. There were blue-coloured orbs in its walls giving off the cool silent vibe. Walking deeper into the cave, the cool feeling became more pronounced. It almost felt cold. There was even water dropping from some of the spikes protruding from the roof of the cave.

Then came the mysterious dragonflies and fireflies all in blue. They looked so harmless so Vincent only concerned himself with admiring the beauty. And right there in the middle of the cave was a pool of water.

Its serenity, neatness and beauty were irresistible, coupled with the blue colour that radiated from within it. Vincent, still covered in blood, did not think twice before jumping into the pool.

Immediately he entered, the water seemed to calm his nerves. It was like all his worries were being washed away. The water even felt warm.

For a moment something shone within the water. Vincent neglected this and continued to enjoy himself. It happened again and this time it was closer to him. What now? Something always wants to destroy my joy both here and in the world.

Finally he felt it on his leg. Something was hitting his leg and it was continuous. With a sigh he dipped himself inside the water.

Sitting on the edge of the pool, Vincent was inspecting the ball in his hand. It looked just like every other ball, extremely small, just about the size of half his fist. It was blue and looked quite mechanical.

Vincent was quite sure it was a machine since it moved and was constantly hitting his leg and some parts of the ball seemed to protrude more than some parts. He was about to drop it and continue with his bath when a bright light blinded his sight and he fell asleep once again.
