Honestly, I hadn't expected things to play out this way.

Dominic appeared razor-sharp during daylight hours; it was simple to overlook that he was basically surviving on willpower alone, his system destroyed by chemicals and poison.

I was always quick to act.

Once I'd decided on something, hesitation never followed.

Without a sound, I moved toward the hospital bed, my left hand clutching a blade, and drove it hard toward Dominic's chest.

In that crucial instant, Dominic suddenly shifted, evading the steel.

The bindings around his arms and legs, which had been securing him, had mysteriously come loose.

I felt a flicker of surprise.

I hadn't anticipated Dominic responding so fast given his condition.

But I only stopped for under a second before attacking again.

This time, Dominic's luck ran out.

He used his arm to deflect the strike.

The blade cut deep into his skin.

Right away, the air grew thick with the sharp, iron smell of blood.
