Chapter 11 – The Fox and the Lamb
Qiao Xueran sat quietly in the Xun family's lavish sitting room, her fingers twisting the hem of her white sleeve. She kept her eyes lowered, playing the part of the timid child.
Then she felt it — a sharp gaze studying her.
She looked up.
Jin Wurou, freshly returned from abroad, leaned lazily against the doorway. His tailored suit hugged his tall frame, his lips curved into a half-smile that never reached his eyes.
Slowly, he walked toward her, each step echoing in the room. His gaze swept over her from head to toe — not lustfully, but like a predator assessing prey.
Xueran's heart clenched. She forced herself to blink innocently, lips curving into a silly smile.
"Cousin," Wurou said smoothly, his voice low and velvety."Or should I say… fool?"
He stopped in front of her, close enough that she could smell his faint cologne. His fingers lifted, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek.
Inside, Xueran wanted to flinch, to slap his hand away. But instead, she let out a small giggle, tilting her head as though enjoying the touch.
Wurou's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Hmmm. Interesting. You really are different."
Then, suddenly, he straightened and smiled, all charm again.
"Come. Let's go to the bar. A welcome party for me… and maybe a test for you."
Her lashes fluttered. She tilted her head, pretending not to understand, and nodded slowly with that same innocent smile.
But inside her chest, her heart whispered:Another wolf. Another mask. Fine, cousin. I'll play your game too.
