Chapter 22 - 022 The Beginning of Chaos

So after caring for Sansa, Jon casually grabbed a piece of linen to wipe away the blood, then escorted the girl back to her quarters.

Although every man in the camp knew that this beautiful girl, like a white swan, was the eldest daughter of House Stark.

But god knows if these drunken bastards could control themselves, so out of safety considerations, Jon still chose to escort the girl all the way back to the Stark family's camp.

When the Winterfell guards surrounded them, Jon didn't waste any words. He gently patted the girl on the back, then turned and left.

During this time, apart from telling Sansa to be careful when going out and to leave the rest to him, the transmigrator didn't say another word.

However, what Jon didn't know was that when he turned to leave, the girl who usually maintained a polite distance from him now had an indescribable look flashing in her eyes.

After sorting this out, the transmigrator finally had the time to deal with the current trouble.

For now, he couldn't go crying to Ned for protection; that would only cause unimaginable trouble for the Duke.

But similarly, he couldn't go to King Robert for justice.

Although this absurd Boar King still possessed wisdom, that was only when he was sober.

Even if he could handle it impartially, in the end, the one punished would presumably be him, a bastard close to a commoner, not the noble Crown Prince and his son.

So, the only person who could restrain Joffrey's behavior right now was probably just one candidate.

Thinking of this, Jon couldn't help but cover his face with his hand.

Although he was reluctant in a thousand ways, thinking that he would have to frequent the Queen's tent for several nights in a row, the transmigrator felt deeply that his days were numbered.

Even if those people of House Lannister were tight-lipped, there was no such thing as an airtight wall in this world.

Thinking of this, Jon finally understood why the Lannister siblings couldn't wait to kill Robert.

Anyone, foreseeing that they might have their head spiked on the wall at any moment, would be driven mad by fear and would pay any price or do anything crazy for self-preservation.

So for now, it seemed that on the matter of Robert's sudden death, Jon had reached a potential agreement with the Lannisters' interests.

But before that, the transmigrator, walking on the edge of a blade, stepped into Her Grace the Queen's territory with mixed feelings.

...

Ignoring Jon's current situation, immediately after receiving the raven, the entirety of Winterfell sprang into action.

But after hearing the news, Robb quickly adjusted the layout and sent the mobilized soldiers back to the camp under the pretext of a drill.

After that, many core guards, including Ser Rodrik, were deployed by the Young Wolf in several rooms of the main keep. Then, they just needed to wait for the fish to take the bait.

Although Robb still had doubts about the authenticity of this news, Maester Luwin was certain there was no problem with it.

As for the reason, he didn't say it explicitly. But as the teacher of the children of Winterfell, he knew better than anyone whose handwriting it was.

Combined with the source of the raven's release, even if the Maester didn't want to get involved in noble conspiracies, he could guess that the child by the King's side might have heard some secret, which was why he risked being hanged to pass on this news.

Moreover, his reason for persuading Robb was fully justified. Even if this was fake news, Winterfell wouldn't suffer any losses.

After Bran's incident, the entire North could no longer bear similar losses, so raising the alert level seemed very reasonable.

However, as time passed little by little, until another week had gone by, the situation described in the warning did not happen.

Let alone the assassin, even the core guards felt exhausted. Even though they were just standing guard and had people rotating shifts, the mental drain could not be recovered in the short term.

After that, the core members of Winterfell met again, including the grieving Catelyn, who participated in the meeting.

Although Lady Stark's mind was entirely on decorating the seven-pointed star wreath, she also understood that there seemed to be hidden circumstances behind Bran's fall from the Broken Tower.

However, just as everyone started arguing, a wolf howl interrupted all disputes.

Ser Rodrik and the other knights exchanged glances, then suddenly stood up and rushed toward Bran's room.

When they arrived at the periphery of the room, they found that the guard originally stationed there had fallen to the ground. A huge gash open at his neck had already taken away all his vitality.

Seeing this, veins throbbed on Robb's forehead. He flashed into the room immediately.

Then, he saw Bran's small wolf pinning a gray-robed man to the ground with all its might. Piercing wolf howls and miserable screams intertwined into a horrific picture.

For a moment, everyone stood frozen on the spot.

However, it was Ser Rodrik, experienced in battle, who reacted first.

With a sudden swing of his longsword, he cut the assassin down instantly.

However, when people separated the wolf and the assassin, they saw that the man's neck had been half bitten off. Clearly, nothing more could be asked of him.

As for Bran, he was still paralyzed on the bed as if asleep.

Seeing this, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Although things had changed, overall, it didn't exceed everyone's expectations.

...

Jon ignored everything happening in Winterfell.

After managing to escape Cersei's tent with great difficulty, he could be certain of one thing: if this continued, even if Robert didn't chop off his big head, his days would be numbered because of his "little head."

Regarding Joffrey and the two Red Cloaks, the Queen didn't seem too concerned at the time, making Jon feel that try-hards die horribly and planning ahead was completely redundant.

As for the reason, one could guess without trying that His Highness Joffrey kept his mouth shut and actually didn't tell anyone about this scandalous matter.

As for those soldiers in the camp, they seemed to be mostly from the City Watch of King's Landing. In Commander Janos Slynt's view, the lives and deaths of these people couldn't compare to the Crown Prince's mood at all.

Therefore, after casually distributing a few Gold Dragons, the compensation was considered complete, causing not even the slightest ripple.

Not only that, even others seemed accustomed to this, showing that human life was worth nothing in Westeros.

On the other hand, by delivering himself to Cersei, Jon not only expended a lot of energy but also had to sign a humiliating treaty, needing to help her continue to fish for insider information about the Warden of the East.

Facing these unreasonable demands, the transmigrator cursed Cersei endlessly in his heart.

From the current situation, he was basically filling in for the White Cloak on duty.
