Chapter 18 - when the Hunters Close in

The forest did not forgive them for what they had done.

Ash still clung to the bark of trees long after the fire had died. The earth was cracked, blackened veins spreading outward like scars. Even the wind carried the scent of burned mana—sharp, metallic, unmistakable.

Kael felt it in his chest.

A low, constant pull.

Like a hook embedded beneath his ribs, tugging him forward, warning him backward, whispering danger in a language older than thought.

The System chimed faintly.

[Passive threat detection active.]

[Warning: pursuit probability increasing.]

"Not just one," Kael muttered.

Luna glanced at him sharply. "You feel it too?"

He nodded.

Nyx didn't slow her pace. "Good. Then we're already late."

They moved fast—but not recklessly.

Cinder padded beside Kael with unnatural silence for something its size, heat carefully restrained, wings tucked close. Every so often, it would pause, nostrils flaring, head tilting as if listening to something no one else could hear.

Each time, Kael felt a ripple through the bond.

They're close.

Not directly behind.

Not above.

Fanning out.

Iris cursed under her breath. "I don't like this. Too quiet."

Nyx glanced up at the canopy. "They're professionals."

Kael frowned. "Hunters?"

Nyx shook her head slowly.

"No. Hunters don't coordinate like this."

The System chimed again, louder.

[Multiple hostile signatures detected.]

[Threat classification: organized.]

[Estimated count: unknown.]

Luna stiffened. "Mercenaries?"

Nyx exhaled. "Worse."

Kael's jaw tightened. "Nobles."

No one argued.

It came out of nowhere.

A scream of metal and mana ripping through the air.

Cinder reacted first.

Its body twisted, shoulder slamming into Kael hard enough to knock the breath from his lungs as a black-shafted arrow tore through the space where his head had been a heartbeat earlier.

It embedded itself into a tree.

The bark hissed.

Then melted.

"Poison!" Iris shouted.

Nyx vanished.

Luna grabbed Kael's arm. "Down!"

The forest erupted.

Arrows rained from above—enchanted, humming, burning with sigils Kael didn't recognize. One exploded midair, scattering shards of light that cut through leaves like razors.

Cinder roared.

The sound shook the forest.

The System blared.

[Host under attack.]

[Emergency protocols engaged.]

[Combat assistance limited.]

Kael hit the ground hard, pain flaring through his chest as Luna dragged him behind a fallen trunk.

"I can fight," he hissed.

"No," she snapped. "You can barely breathe."

She wasn't wrong.

Every deep breath felt like fire crawling through his ribs.

Nyx reappeared above them, blades dripping blood.

"They're not here to kill," she said sharply. "They're here to capture."

Iris snarled. "That's worse."

Cinder lunged.

Fire did not explode outward—not wildly, not uncontrollably.

It focused.

A cone of white-hot flame blasted through the canopy, vaporizing arrows midflight, turning branches to ash. Screams followed.

But then—

Chains.

Glowing, rune-etched chains shot from multiple directions, slamming into Cinder's limbs, its wings, its neck.

The forest floor cracked under the impact.

Cinder roared again, fury and pain rippling through the bond so violently Kael screamed.

The System reacted instantly.

[Bond distress critical.]

[Warning: shared pain amplification.]

Kael convulsed, vision blurring, blood filling his mouth.

"Cinder!" he screamed.

The dragon thrashed, fire flaring—but the chains absorbed it, sigils pulsing brighter.

A voice echoed from the trees.

"Hold it!"

A man stepped forward.

Tall.

Armored.

Crested cloak marked with a silver tower sigil.

Noble.

He smiled like someone who had already won.

"Alive," he said calmly. "Both of them."

Kael locked eyes with him.

And hated him instantly.

Nyx moved.

Faster than Kael could track.

She lunged for the noble's throat.

A barrier snapped into place midair.

Her blades slammed against invisible force, sparks flying.

The noble didn't even flinch.

"Tsk. Assassins," he said mildly. "Always dramatic."

He raised a hand.

The chains tightened.

Cinder screamed.

Kael screamed with it.

The System's voice fractured.

[Warning.]

[Host vitals destabilizing.]

[Bond integrity at risk.]

Kael's vision tunneled.

His heart pounded erratically.

The noble frowned. "Ah. So it's a full bond."

Interest flickered in his eyes.

"How rare."

Luna stepped forward, hands raised.

"We'll come quietly," she said tightly. "Just release the dragon."

The noble laughed.

"No."

He gestured.

"Kill the others."

Something inside Kael snapped.

Not rage.

Not fear.

Resolve.

A cold, absolute certainty.

The System chimed.

Then stopped.

Silence.

Then—

[Override request detected.]

Kael sucked in a breath that burned his lungs raw.

"I accept," he whispered.

The world slowed.

The System spoke again—but not calmly.

[Warning.]

[This action exceeds current host parameters.]

[Consequences irreversible.]

Kael smiled through blood.

"Do it."

A new prompt burned across his vision.

[Emergency Authority: DRACONIC SYNCHRONIZATION.]

[Status: LOCKED.]

[Condition: mutual consent required.]

Cinder's eyes snapped to Kael.

Gold met gold.

Understanding passed between them.

Cinder lowered its head.

Pressed its forehead against Kael's chest.

The bond flared.

[Consent confirmed.]

The chains shattered.

Fire did not explode.

It erupted.

A shockwave of heat blasted outward, obliterating trees, incinerating chains, vaporizing mercenaries mid-scream.

The noble staggered back, barrier cracking.

"What—?"

Cinder rose to its full height.

Wings unfurled.

Not half-formed anymore.

Complete.

Massive.

Magnificent.

The forest bowed.

The System screamed.

[ERROR.]

[Unauthorized evolution spike detected.]

[Species classification shifting.]

Kael stood.

On his own feet.

No pain.

No weakness.

Power thrummed through his veins like molten gold.

The noble stared in horror.

"That's impossible—!"

Kael looked at him.

And spoke.

"Run."

The noble tried.

Cinder inhaled.

And ended him.

---

After the Fire

The forest burned.

Not wildly.

Selectively.

When the flames died, only ash and silence remained.

Kael dropped to one knee.

The System flickered weakly.

[Emergency synchronization complete.]

[Warning: backlash imminent.]

He collapsed.

Cinder caught him.

Held him.

The others stared in stunned silence.

Nyx finally exhaled.

"…We're in trouble."

Luna laughed softly, hysterically. "We were already."

The System chimed one last time before fading.

[Notice.]

[You are no longer considered minor threat.]

[Global classification updated.]

Somewhere far away, bells began to ring.
