Chapter 21 - the hunt begins at dawn

The forest did not return to normal after Astryx left.

That was the first thing Kael noticed when he woke.

Not the aching weight in his bones.

Not the way his heartbeat felt too loud, too steady.

Not even the faint golden shimmer that crawled across his forearms before sinking beneath his skin again.

No—

it was the silence.

Birds didn't sing.

Insects didn't buzz.

Even the wind moved cautiously, as if it feared disturbing something that might still be watching.

Kael sat up slowly.

Cinder was awake.

Fully awake.

Its head was raised, eyes sharp, body coiled in a way Kael now recognized as combat-ready. The dragon didn't pace. Didn't fidget.

It waited.

Like something that knew patience was a weapon.

The System chimed softly.

[Environmental hostility elevated.]

[Survival probability adjusted.]

Kael sighed. "I don't like how vague you're being."

No response.

That… was new.

They didn't talk about Astryx at first.

They packed quietly, efficiently. Iris dismantled the campfire with practiced movements. Nyx erased their tracks with methods Kael very deliberately chose not to ask about. Luna moved stiffly, her scales faintly visible along her collarbone before she tugged her cloak higher.

No one joked.

That alone told Kael how bad things were.

Finally, Iris broke the silence.

"So," she said, tying her pack. "Ancient dragon. World-ending prophecy vibes. Hidden system conspiracy."

She looked at Kael.

"On a scale from one to 'we're all doomed,' how screwed are we?"

Kael considered.

"…Yes."

Nyx snorted despite herself.

Luna managed a small smile. "At least you're consistent."

The System chimed again—louder this time.

[Notice.]

[Host presence destabilizing local probability fields.]

Kael stopped walking.

"…That sounds important."

Nyx's eyes narrowed. "Say that again, System."

The System did not repeat itself.

Instead—

[Priority alert.]

[Multiple observers confirmed.]

[Hunt protocols initiated.]

The forest moved.

Not physically.

But the sense of being watched snapped into something sharp and undeniable.

Cinder growled low in its throat.

Kael felt it through the bond.

They're here.

The attack came from the left.

A flash of movement.

A distortion in the air.

A blade where no blade should have been.

Nyx reacted instantly, steel clashing against steel as sparks exploded between her daggers and a thin, curved sword that phased half-in and half-out of reality.

The man holding it smiled.

"Oh," he said pleasantly. "Fast."

The System screamed.

[Elite hostile detected.]

[Classification: Rift Hunter.]

[Threat level: high.]

Three more figures emerged from the trees.

Then five.

Then—too many.

Luna swore. "They're coordinated."

Iris drew her weapon. "They always are when the money's good."

Kael stepped forward.

Cinder moved with him.

The hunters froze.

Not in fear.

In calculation.

The lead hunter tilted his head.

"…That's a real dragon," he murmured. "We're underpaid."

Kael smiled thinly.

"Run," he suggested.

They didn't.

The moment combat began, Kael felt it.

Resistance.

Like pushing against invisible hands that didn't want him to move the way he wanted to move.

The System chimed rapidly.

[Combat assistance restricted.]

[Synchronization dampened.]

[Unauthorized authority detected.]

Kael staggered as his connection to Cinder flickered.

"What—?"

Pain lanced through his skull.

Cinder roared, fire flaring unevenly as if something was interfering with its output.

Nyx shouted, "The System's throttling you!"

Kael clenched his teeth.

"So now you care about rules?!"

The System replied instantly.

[Correction.]

[Rules are required for stability.]

Kael laughed—sharp, almost hysterical.

"Funny," he spat, dodging a spear that grazed his shoulder. "You didn't mind breaking them when I was dying!"

The System did not respond.

But something else did.

Cinder pushed.

The bond flared—not violently, but insistently.

Kael felt a pressure in his chest, a door creaking open.

The System screeched.

[WARNING.]

[Secondary authority detected.]

Kael gasped.

"…Cinder?"

The dragon's eyes burned brighter.

And for the first time—

Kael realized something terrifying.

Cinder wasn't borrowing power from the System anymore.

It was bypassing it.

The hunters regrouped fast.

Too fast.

Sigils lit up beneath their feet—containment arrays, glowing blue and gold.

The lead hunter raised his sword.

"Dragon stays," he said calmly. "The boy's optional."

Kael felt something snap.

"Wrong," he said softly.

Cinder inhaled.

The System screamed.

[Unauthorized output spike!]

[Containment failure imminent!]

Fire erupted—not outward, but downward.

The ground liquefied.

The sigils shattered like glass.

Two hunters screamed as molten earth swallowed their legs.

The rest scattered.

Nyx took advantage immediately.

Blood splashed across leaves.

Iris laughed wildly. "Okay! I'm back to enjoying this!"

Kael stood shaking, heat rippling off his skin.

The System flickered violently.

[Host condition unstable.]

[Draconic assimilation: 5%.]

"…That went up," Kael muttered.

Luna grabbed his arm. "Kael. Look."

He followed her gaze.

More figures stood at the forest's edge.

Watching.

Not attacking.

Assessing.

One of them wore white.

Another wore gold.

A third—

A dragon-shaped shadow flickered behind them.

Nyx's voice was cold. "That's not just a hunt anymore."

Kael swallowed.

"…That's an audience."

The System chimed—slow, heavy.

[Designation pressure increasing.]

[Host refusing name may result in forced assignment.]

Kael's heart skipped.

"System," he said quietly. "What happens if I'm named?"

The System hesitated.

[Names anchor authority.]

[Authority attracts correction.]

Kael exhaled.

"So I become real enough to kill properly."

[Affirmative.]

He looked at Cinder.

At his friends.

At the forest filled with enemies who no longer bothered hiding.

"…Figures."

The white-robed observer stepped forward.

"Kael Ardent," the man called. "You are in violation of multiple covenants."

Kael cupped his hands around his mouth.

"Get in line!"

Iris cackled.

Nyx smirked.

Luna shook her head—but smiled.

The System chimed one last time, quieter now.

[Notice.]

[Hunt escalation confirmed.]

[Survival probability recalculated.]

Kael cracked his neck.

"Alright," he said. "Let's make this expensive."

Cinder roared.

The forest answered.
