The cell locks released.
A faint electrical pulse moved through the walls as the damaged security system collapsed one section at a time. Kaelen stepped through the open cage door with Vane beside him, leaving behind the isolation pens where he had spent the final hours of his captivity. The Great Colosseum was still shaking from the escape. Emergency alarms screamed through the lower levels, smoke poured from damaged ventilation ducts, and sparks fell from the ceiling.
Then Vane looked toward the flickering terminal.
"The tracking net is rebooting."
Kaelen's eyes hardened.
"How long?"
"Twenty seconds before they regain the lower sector."
A burst of gunfire sounded from the eastern corridor.
The mercenaries had already found them.
"Move," Kaelen ordered.
Eva's voice came through the communication channel.
"Western utility corridor. I have a route open, but it will not stay open for long."
Kaelen grabbed Vane's arm.
"Run."
They moved through the damaged maintenance corridor as the first emergency lights began flickering back to life. Red warning lights spread across the walls, revealing the smoke filled passage ahead. Behind them, boots struck the metal floor as arena security forces rushed toward the isolation pens.
Vane looked at the tactical display on his wrist.
"Fourteen seconds."
A security door suddenly dropped ahead of them.
Kaelen stopped for less than a second.
His SS rank muscle memory took control.
He drove his shoulder into the emergency release panel, crushing the damaged mechanism. The door stopped halfway.
"Under."
Vane dropped beneath it.
Kaelen followed, pulling himself through just as a kinetic projectile struck the wall behind him.
The impact filled the corridor with sparks.
"Seven seconds," Vane said.
Eva appeared at the far end of the corridor.
Her laser rifle was already firing.
The first two mercenaries pursuing them fell back as yellow energy cut through the smoke.
"Keep moving!" Eva shouted.
Kaelen pushed Vane toward her.
His left upper arm burned from the fresh kinetic wound. Blood had already soaked through the medical wrap, while the curse wound along his right ribs pulsed beneath his skin. His body was exhausted from six combat waves, but his SS rank muscle memory kept his movements controlled.
They reached the western utility ramp.
Eva looked behind them.
"More coming."
Kaelen glanced at the corridor.
Six mercenaries appeared through the smoke.
Their high capacity kinetic lances were already charging.
"How long until the ship is ready?" Kaelen asked.
"Eight seconds."
"Then we have eight seconds."
Kaelen stepped forward.
Eva immediately understood.
"General, you cannot fight them here."
"I do not need to."
Kaelen kicked a damaged maintenance cylinder from the floor.
It rolled across the narrow passage.
The first mercenary stepped around it.
Kaelen pulled the rusted durasteel strut from his side and struck the exposed emergency valve.
The cylinder ruptured.
A thick cloud of chemical steam exploded across the corridor.
The mercenaries disappeared into the white haze.
"Now."
Eva grabbed Vane and pulled him toward the platform.
Kaelen followed.
The massive black assault frigate waited with its loading hatch open.
Its engines were already at full power.
"Inside!" Eva shouted.
Vane entered first.
Kaelen followed.
A kinetic projectile struck the platform behind him.
He crossed the loading hatch as the frigate's durasteel doors slammed shut.
"Launch!"
The assault frigate detached from the docking platform and surged upward.
Another projectile struck the outer hull.
The ship shook violently.
Eva grabbed the command console.
"They have our vector."
Vane rushed to the navigation station.
"They are locking the orbital tracking grid."
"Can you break it?"
"I can delay it."
"How long?"
"Forty seconds."
Eva looked at Kaelen.
"We need more than forty."
Kaelen looked through the observation window.
The Great Colosseum was already surrounded by Imperial security ships.
Searchlights swept across the mining complex.
"They are not getting forty seconds."
Vane inserted the crystalline data chip into the navigation console.
The tactical display flickered.
Imperial tracking signals multiplied across the screen.
Then three disappeared.
Then five.
Then twelve.
Vane's eyes widened.
"The chip is corrupting their tracking references."
"Good," Eva said. "Give me a route."
Vane rapidly entered the coordinates.
"Outer Rim corridor. It is unstable."
"How unstable?"
"Bad enough to destroy an unshielded ship."
Eva smiled.
"Then we use it."
Kaelen looked at her.
"You can fly it?"
"I am a Star Pirate."
She pushed the engines harder.
The frigate broke through the atmosphere.
Behind them, Imperial scout speeders entered pursuit.
Red tracking beams crossed the darkness.
"Thirty seconds," Vane warned.
A missile passed beneath the frigate.
The entire ship shook.
Kaelen caught the navigation console with his right hand.
His injured left arm remained useless.
"Twenty seconds."
Another missile struck the outer shield.
Warning alarms filled the command room.
Eva pushed the ship toward the unstable FTL corridor.
"Ten seconds."
The Imperial tracking system locked onto them.
Vane shouted.
"Jump now!"
Eva activated the FTL drive.
Space folded around the black frigate.
The Imperial tracking signals vanished.
The Great Colosseum disappeared behind them.
For the first time in years, Kaelen was no longer inside an Imperial facility.
He looked back through the observation window.
The planet became smaller behind them.
The place where he had been sold as a prisoner, forced into six combat waves, and treated as an entertainment asset was finally disappearing into the darkness.
But Kaelen did not feel free.
Not yet.
Vane's discovery had changed everything.
His father's death seven years ago had not been a military accident. The Empire had hidden a massive conspiracy, and Lysander had used the Imperial military to bury it.
The Great Colosseum had only been another part of that system.
Eva stepped beside him.
"We are clear."
Kaelen looked at her.
"For now."
Eva nodded.
"The border planet is ready."
Kaelen turned toward the front window.
"Then take us there."
The frigate continued through FTL space.
The stars stretched into lines of light.
Behind them remained the Great Colosseum, the Imperial tracking network, and the world that had tried to break him.
Ahead waited an abandoned border planet.
No Imperial garrison.
No royal court.
No protection.
Only an empty military station and thousands of forgotten people.
Two cycles later, the black assault frigate emerged from FTL space above a forgotten border planet.
The transition was violent.
The ship shook as the engines dropped from faster than light travel into normal space, sending a deep vibration through every section of the hull. Outside the observation windows, a dark planet slowly filled the view. Its surface was covered by endless gray mountains, dry plains, and scattered industrial ruins left behind by an older Imperial mining operation.
There were no major cities, no Imperial fleet stations, and no royal garrisons. Only a few abandoned settlements and a damaged orbital communication tower that had stopped transmitting years ago.
Eva stood at the main navigation console, one hand resting against the edge of the control panel.
"Welcome to the border," she said.
Kaelen stood behind her.
His body was still damaged from the Great Colosseum.
The fresh wound across his left upper arm had been sealed with several layers of medical tissue. The curse wound along his right ribs remained under temporary control, its dark veins still visible beneath his skin. His body was exhausted, but his gray eyes were steady.
He looked through the forward window.
"Why this planet?"
Eva turned toward him.
"Because nobody cares about it."
She pointed toward the planet.
"The Empire abandoned the mining operation twelve years ago. The communication grid collapsed soon after. The official registry lists the population as less than three thousand."
Kaelen studied the orbital map.
"Official registry."
Eva gave a small smile.
"Exactly."
Vane sat at the navigation station nearby. The old Imperial Fleet Navigator was still wearing the same faded flight tunic from the Great Colosseum. His broken silver insignia remained attached to his chest.
He adjusted the holographic map.
"The real population is closer to twelve thousand," he said. "Most are former miners, smugglers, escaped laborers, and frontier families. The Imperial government stopped sending supplies years ago."
Kaelen's eyes moved across the map.
"And security?"
"Almost none."
Vane enlarged the orbital display.
"There are three old defense platforms. Two are inactive. The third has enough power to operate its tracking system, but its weapons are damaged."
Eva looked toward Kaelen.
"That is why I chose it."
The frigate began its descent.
Below them, the planet's surface became clearer.
A long valley stretched between two mountain ranges. Rusted mining towers stood along the valley floor. Old cargo rails disappeared beneath the earth. Several concrete structures had collapsed, leaving large sections of the mining complex exposed to the dry air.
At the center of the valley stood the largest surviving structure.
An old military supply station.
Its walls were thick enough to resist orbital debris, and several underground levels remained intact.
Kaelen watched it carefully.
"That will be our base."
Eva nodded.
"The first stage."
The frigate descended through the thin atmosphere.
Dust struck the outer hull in long waves as the ship passed over the abandoned mining towers. Several small settlements appeared below. Their buildings were poorly maintained, their roofs covered with metal sheets and old solar panels.
There were people here.
People who had been forgotten.
Kaelen's eyes narrowed.
He remembered Vane's words.
Human populations from the outer sectors had been exchanged for stellar marrow.
Entire groups had been recorded as battlefield losses.
The Empire had erased them from its records.
Now Kaelen was standing above one of those forgotten worlds.
The frigate landed on the cracked concrete platform outside the old military station.
The engines slowly powered down.
The hangar doors opened.
Cold dry air entered the loading bay.
Eva stepped onto the platform first.
Kaelen followed.
Vane came behind them carrying a small navigation case.
Several frontier survivors waited near the edge of the landing platform. They were armed with old rifles, mining tools, and repaired military equipment.
They looked at Kaelen carefully.
Some recognized him immediately.
Others only knew the rumors.
The General who had been declared a traitor.
The prisoner sold to the Great Colosseum.
The man who had survived six combat waves.
Eva walked toward the group.
"This is General Kaelen."
The survivors became silent.
A middle aged miner stepped forward.
"Are the stories true?"
Kaelen looked at him.
"Which ones?"
The miner hesitated.
"That you survived the Colosseum."
Kaelen's expression remained calm.
"Yes."
The man looked toward the damaged black frigate behind him.
"And now?"
Kaelen turned toward the abandoned military station.
"Now we build."
The miner frowned.
"Build what?"
Kaelen walked past him.
"A force."
He stopped at the entrance of the old station.
"One that does not answer to the Imperial Council."
The survivors exchanged uncertain looks.
Eva smiled.
Vane remained silent.
Kaelen entered the station.
The interior was dark and covered in dust. Old Imperial banners hung from the walls, their symbols faded almost beyond recognition. Broken terminals lined the command corridor. Several doors had been forced open years ago, leaving exposed wiring hanging from the ceiling.
Kaelen walked deeper inside.
At the end of the corridor stood a large command room.
The central tactical table was still intact.
Kaelen placed his hand against its surface.
The system flickered.
A damaged Imperial emblem appeared above the table.
Then it disappeared.
Kaelen looked at the empty display.
"The old Empire is finished here."
Eva stepped beside him.
"And what replaces it?"
Kaelen looked at the orbital map projected above the table.
The border planet appeared in the center.
Around it were hundreds of systems.
Some belonged to the Empire.
Others belonged to independent settlements, frontier clans, smugglers, mining colonies, and former military territories.
All of them were vulnerable.
All of them were outside the protection of the Imperial government.
Kaelen's eyes hardened.
"We protect them."
Eva studied him.
"That sounds larger than a military base."
"It is."
Kaelen expanded the map.
Several surrounding systems lit up.
"We establish supply routes between the border worlds. We repair the abandoned defense platforms. We recruit former soldiers, frontier fighters, and people who were abandoned by the Empire."
Vane slowly approached the table.
"And what do we call this force?"
Kaelen looked at him.
"For now, nothing."
He paused.
"Names attract attention."
Eva gave a quiet laugh.
"You are still thinking like an Imperial General."
Kaelen looked at her.
"I am thinking like a General who survived an Imperial execution."
Eva's smile faded.
The room became quiet.
Everyone understood what that meant.
Kaelen had not escaped the Great Colosseum to hide.
He had escaped because the Empire had given him a reason to fight.
A small warning symbol suddenly appeared on the tactical display.
Vane's expression changed.
"Unregistered ship approaching."
Eva immediately moved toward the communications console.
"Imperial?"
Vane shook his head.
"No Imperial transponder."
Kaelen looked at the screen.
"How many?"
"One ship."
"Class?"
Vane checked the signal.
"Small transport. Damaged engine. No weapons detected."
Eva frowned.
"That is strange."
Kaelen's hand rested near his weapon.
"Open the communication channel."
A burst of static filled the command room.
Then a weak voice came through.
"Border station, this is civilian transport Seven Four."
The voice sounded frightened.
"We have been attacked. We need emergency landing permission."
Kaelen looked toward Eva.
"Let them land."
Eva hesitated.
"We do not know who they are."
"I know."
Kaelen's voice remained calm.
"That is why we will watch them."
The transport entered the atmosphere.
Its damaged engine left a thin trail of smoke behind it.
Kaelen watched the approaching ship on the tactical display.
Something about the signal bothered him.
It was too weak.
Too clean.
Too carefully damaged.
His instincts tightened.
"Vane."
"Yes, General?"
"Track the ship's internal power output."
Vane checked the data.
His expression slowly changed.
"The engine is damaged."
Kaelen waited.
"But the life support system is running at military grade efficiency."
Eva's hand moved toward her weapon.
Kaelen looked at the incoming transport.
"Then we have our first visitor."
The transport continued toward the base.
Kaelen stood silently beneath the broken Imperial emblem.
He had escaped the Colosseum.
He had uncovered the truth about his father's death.
Now he had reached the border.
But the war had not followed him here.
It had been waiting for him.
And this time, Kaelen intended to build the force that would meet it.
