Chapter 60: The Rogue Coalition
At exactly 02:00, the execution phase of the escape protocol broke the remaining structural balance of the lower staging pens. Kaelen, standing flat against the cold concrete floorboards of his isolation cell, jammed the high capacity crystalline data chip Vane had passed through the iron mesh straight into the primary maintenance gate console mounted along the wall paneling.
He did not use an Imperial clearance card or an encrypted biometric token. His right hand applied brutal force to drive the jagged metal edges of the chip directly into the exposed, live wiring of the secondary distribution bus.
BOOM.
The synchronized data loop Vane had mapped into the chip's secondary frequency exploded through the colosseum's central automation matrix like a digital kinetic shockwave. A massive high voltage short circuit tore straight through the lower bedrock channels, instantly causing the primary hydraulic lines to lock up with a deafening screech of tearing iron. The ambient amber warning lights along the walkways violently blew out in a shower of white hot welding sparks, plunging the entire subterranean three hundred meter sector into an absolute sheet of darkness.
"The security field has dropped!" Vane's gravelly voice boomed through the dark from the adjacent cell, his boots silent against the iron floorboards as the automatic locking pins of his cage gate slid back with a dead mechanical click. "The central tracking net is blind for exactly forty five seconds, General! Move your frame now!"
Kaelen did not waste a single breath on a verbal reply. His SS rank muscle memory, long trained to operate within the chaotic conditions of an orbital blackout, took absolute command of his damaged frame. He brought the butt of his rusted durasteel strut down with crushing force across the manual deadbolt node of his own cage door, shearing the iron bolts from their tracks in a single motion. He stepped through the ruined threshold into the wet corridor, his gray eyes wide, clear, and clinical as he caught sight of Vane through his bloodshot left eye and hauled the old navigator toward the western utility ramp.
Through the crumbling concrete threshold of the primary exit lane, a shadow moved with impossible speed, moving with a fluid mechanical grace that ignored the narrow access stairs. It was Captain Eva of the Star Pirates.
She did not wear the silver knots of an Imperial officer or the porcelain mask of a capital noble. Her tall frame was wrapped in a rugged, oil stained black assault tunic covered in loose ammunition webbing. Her long dark hair was pulled back behind a heavy duty communication headset that hummed with a low voltage stabilization current. Her hand was rock steady on the grip of her heavy duty laser rifle, the yellow defensive glare of her weapon cutting a thin path through the smoke as she waved them toward the outer platform.
"The navigation loop is open, General!" Eva shouted over the continuous shriek of the colosseum's manual alarms. "Vane mapped your biometric signature straight to my ship's receiver lines twenty minutes ago! My assault vanguard has just cleared the outer fence towers! We have exactly twelve seconds before the Prince's orbital scout speeders recalculate our FTL jump coordinates!"
"The lane is clear ahead," Kaelen rasped through his locked teeth, his short sentences thin but precise as he led the sprint down the narrow durasteel utility tracks. His left upper arm remained completely limp against his cloak wrap, the muscle fibers scorched from Prince Lysander's Aethelgard projectile, but his center of gravity remained locked on the open mouth of the outer docking pad.
Behind them, the facility's emergency backup generators kicked into their high pressure cycles, throwing up a massive plume of blinding white searchlights from the lower abattoirs. A squad of six unbadged arena mercenaries, armed with high capacity kinetic lances, broke through the smoke of the eastern catwalk, their visors switching to manual optical feeds as they recognized the General's naked, scarred torso.
"Clear the platform!" the lead mercenary shouted through the haze, his lance firing a blind high velocity projectile straight into the gray fog of the lane.
BANG.
The kinetic bullet tore through the chemical haze with a high pitched electronic shriek. Kaelen pivoted his massive frame through the gray cloud using a standard fleet retreat maneuver to shield the older navigator behind his shoulder, but the lane width was too narrow and the trajectory was too wide to be completely avoided. The high velocity projectile struck his left upper arm with a wet, brutal thud, shattering the remaining synth canvas patch Jaren had applied and tearing a fresh, jagged trench straight through his SS rank muscle tissue.
He did not shriek. He did not drop his center of gravity or let his posture fracture. His jaw locked with enough force to crack his teeth against the searing kinetic heat of the wound, his SS rank muscle memory forcing the pain under control as Eva hauled his bleeding, heavy frame inside the main loading hatch of the massive, non reflective black assault frigate waiting on the western utility pad.
The heavy durasteel doors slammed shut with a dead hydraulic sigh. The frigate instantly detached its docking clamps and surged forward into the deep, unmapped vacuum of the Outer Rim at maximum propulsion velocity, leaving the burning colosseum and Lysander's tracking net far behind in the smoke.
Two cycles later, the black assault frigate drifted within a silent, completely unmapped asteroid belt near the fringe of the Core worlds.
Inside the primary tactical command room, a large wooden table had been cleared of its cargo manifests to hold the live holographic projection maps of the Forbidden City. Kaelen stood at the head of the deck, his tall, powerful frame wrapped in a clean, jet black combat uniform that bore no Imperial insignia. His left upper arm was bound in a fresh, thick white canvas wrap where Eva's medical cells had manually stabilized the new projectile wound. The steady vibration of the ship's engines traveled through the deck and into his bare boots.
His gray eyes were diagnostic, wide, and stone cold as he looked around the table at the gathered members of his new operational group. Captain Eva of the Star Pirates stood opposite him. Vane, the veteran navigator, stood beside the main tactical console. Several remaining unaligned frontier outcasts who had escaped the sector net waited behind them.
The data from the seven year archive Vane had recovered was scrolling rapidly across the main monitor screen, revealing hidden defense trenches, traitor noble profiles, and deployment nodes Prince Lysander used to secure his political control. The deception was total. The human leadership was corrupt. The Empire had been turned into a tool for the ambitions of one man.
But as Kaelen closed his right fist over the edge of the console, the deep tactical doubt that had followed him through his exile finally disappeared. In its place was a cold, burning purpose that carried the weight of an offensive campaign.
"The alignment is locked," Kaelen commanded, his short sentences thin but precise as he pointed toward the center node of the Forbidden City map. "We do not run from the net, and we do not fight to save the Council. We assemble the fleet, we consolidate our remaining ammunition, and we execute a direct attack against the capital core. We tear down Lysander's armies and take the throne from his hands."
Eva gave a low, dangerous laugh, her fingers rapidly resetting the ignition keys of the assault ships on her dashboard terminal.
"A beautifully aggressive plan, General. The vanguard is ready to jump on your signal."
Kaelen looked at the glowing map of the Forbidden City.
For seven years, the Empire had hidden the truth about his father's death. It had buried the fleet, erased the records, framed Valerius, and turned Kaelen into a prisoner.
Now the truth was no longer buried.
The Navigator's ledger had opened the way out of the Great Colosseum.
The fleet waiting in the dark would become the beginning of something new.
Kaelen raised his eyes toward the capital map.
"Then we begin."
The tactical display expanded across the entire command room.
The first movement of the Rogue Coalition had begun.
