Chapter 59 - Chapter 59

The automated system terminal mounted along the non reflective black durasteel wall did not begin a normal reset cycle after the Titan Star Serpent collapsed. The nearly ten meter steel plated carcass lay twisted across the narrow durasteel ledge, its damaged joints leaking thick violet neural fluid that mixed with the industrial grease left behind by the destroyed security speeders.

The primary sub level hydraulic valves had been badly damaged by the electrical feedback from Kaelen's attack during the previous wave. They could no longer move the damaged tracking panels or clear the debris from the combat area. Instead, the three hundred meter arena slowly descended into further structural failure. Old concrete sections were covered with grease, crushed bone, chemical residue, and toxic industrial slag. Heat from the damaged battery pools baked the surface until black smoke rose from the cracks and the air smelled of sulfur and hot metal.

The arena had reached its structural limit.

The narrow three meter durasteel ledge running around the inner perimeter was warped and cracked. A thick layer of sharp metallic ash covered its surface, mixed with grease and fragments from the destroyed machines. The deep central trench remained empty after the acid had been drained during the fourth wave, but the lower concrete basin was still hot enough to release thin clouds of steam.

There was no clean surface left for a normal charge.

There was no open space for a long movement.

There was only the narrow ledge, the damaged wall, the empty trench, and the growing heat beneath them.

A warning appeared across the main registry.

WARNING. SYSTEM PARAMETERS COMPROMISED. REGISTRY TRANSIT LOOP ACTIVE.

The announcer's mechanical voice followed a moment later.

"ASSET REGISTRY THIRTY SIX. THE FALLEN GENERAL. SIXTH COMBAT WAVE INITIALIZED. EMERGENCY CLEARANCE PROTOCOL ACTIVE."

The noise of the fifty thousand spectators slowly disappeared.

The crowd had expected another large beast.

Instead, the damaged arena had forced the managers to use whatever remained in the lower storage sectors.

The wealthy Imperial nobles and corrupt gentry members sat behind their glass partitions, watching through the black chemical smoke. Their porcelain masks reflected the broken lights of the arena. Several betting displays had stopped responding after the previous wave, leaving only grey static across the screens.

They had already lost most of their high tier combat inventory.

The Star Wolves were dead.

The Star Bear was dead.

The Zerg drones were dead.

The automated speeders had been destroyed.

The Titan Star Serpent had fallen into the empty trench.

There was nothing larger left in the immediate arena inventory.

Now the arena managers were forced to use their remaining scrap units.

"Look at his right ribs," a trader whispered from the first tier. "The curse wound is spreading again. The chemical block from the medical treatment is almost gone."

Another trader stared at his damaged betting screen.

"His left arm is barely moving."

A third voice answered quietly.

"His heart rate is still forty two."

The first trader swallowed.

"That is impossible."

"He is still SS rank."

The words spread through the nearby communication grid.

Kaelen ignored them.

He stood with his back close to the non reflective black durasteel wall.

His grey canvas waist wrap was stained with dust, grease, and blood. His chest was marked with several shallow cuts from the previous wave.

His left upper arm remained almost completely numb.

The synth canvas patch Jaren had placed over the injury was torn and soaked through. Fresh blood moved slowly down toward his wrist.

His right ribs burned beneath the skin.

The curse wound had begun pushing against the weakened chemical barrier again, sending cold pressure toward his nervous system.

His heart rate remained at forty two beats per minute.

His breathing remained steady.

His gray eyes moved across the damaged arena.

He did not look at the spectators.

He did not look at the dead serpent.

He did not look at the betting screens.

He studied the remaining space.

The wall.

The ledge.

The trench.

The broken machines.

The available metal.

Every object could become a weapon.

Every damaged section could become an advantage.

A faint mechanical hiss came from the western gate.

Kaelen turned his head.

The release valves opened.

No massive beast emerged.

Instead, ten small figures moved out of the darkness.

They were scrap scouts.

Low tier bio mechanical drones built from old harvesting machines and damaged security frames.

Their bodies were narrow and uneven.

Rust covered their outer plates.

Old iron rivets held several joints together.

Utility chains had been used to reinforce their legs and shoulders.

Their movements were not smooth.

Each step produced a metallic rattle.

Their eyes were cloudy and milky from chemical damage, but small sensor units inside their heads continued to track heat and movement.

Their jaws opened and closed as they advanced.

A thin violet fluid leaked from their mouths and hissed when it touched the hot metal.

The ten drones spread across the narrow ledge.

They were not intelligent enough to use advanced tactics.

They did not need to be.

Their basic combat program had one instruction.

Push the target into the trench.

Kaelen's right hand tightened around the rusted durasteel strut he had carried through the previous waves.

The metal was cold beneath his fingers despite the heat around him.

Its surface was pitted and damaged.

One end had been worn into a sharp point.

It was not a proper weapon.

But Kaelen had already learned how much damage a simple piece of metal could cause when used correctly.

The lead scrap scout moved first.

Its legs compressed.

Its claws dug into the ledge.

Then it launched forward.

Kaelen did not move.

The drone accelerated toward his chest.

Its metal claws opened.

The distance closed rapidly.

Kaelen watched the movement of its shoulders.

He waited until the final instant.

Then his right arm moved.

The rusted durasteel strut shot forward with precise force.

The sharp end struck the center of the drone's sensor lens.

CRACK.

The composite lens shattered.

The drone's internal tracking system immediately lost Kaelen's position.

Kaelen stepped closer instead of retreating.

His wrist twisted.

The strut drove deeper through the broken sensor housing and into the control unit behind it.

The drone jerked violently.

Kaelen pulled the strut sideways.

The damaged control system tore away from its mounting frame.

The drone collapsed at his feet.

Kaelen kicked the body toward the edge.

The scrap scout slid across the ash covered ledge and fell into the empty trench.

CRASH.

White dust rose from the bottom.

The remaining nine drones changed direction.

They advanced together.

Two came from the left.

Three moved from the right.

The remaining four spread across the rear section of the ledge.

Kaelen's eyes narrowed.

The formation was crude, but the ledge was narrow enough that numbers could still become dangerous.

He could not allow them to surround him.

He moved first.

Kaelen stepped toward the nearest drone and struck the exposed joint beneath its shoulder plate.

The rusted strut punched between two loose metal sections.

He twisted.

The joint broke.

The drone collapsed sideways and struck another unit behind it.

The second drone lost its balance.

Kaelen caught the damaged machine by its upper frame and used its forward momentum to throw it against the wall.

BOOM.

Its head struck the durasteel panel.

The sensor unit shattered.

The machine fell motionless.

A third drone attacked from behind.

Kaelen heard the metallic claws before he saw them.

He turned.

His injured left arm could not rise quickly enough to block the attack.

Instead, he stepped inward.

The claws passed beside his shoulder.

Kaelen caught the drone's wrist with his right hand.

He pulled.

The drone's own momentum carried it past him.

Kaelen drove the rusted strut into the exposed elbow joint.

The metal snapped.

He released the machine.

It spun toward the edge and disappeared into the trench.

The fourth drone charged immediately.

Kaelen stepped backward.

His heel struck one of the exposed floor rivets.

For a fraction of a second, his balance shifted.

The drone raised both claws.

Kaelen used the moment.

He lowered his body and moved beneath the attack.

The claws struck the wall behind him.

Metal screamed against metal.

Kaelen drove the strut upward into the open section beneath the drone's jaw.

The sharp end entered the control housing.

The drone stopped.

Kaelen pulled the weapon free.

The machine dropped.

He kicked it into the trench.

Five remained.

The arena became filled with metallic movement.

The scrap scouts were faster than their damaged bodies suggested. Their basic harvesting systems had been converted into attack routines, giving them short bursts of sudden acceleration.

Kaelen could feel his strength decreasing.

His right ribs burned.

His left arm remained useless.

The curse pressure continued spreading through his side.

He did not waste movement.

He allowed the drones to attack one at a time.

A claw came toward his chest.

He moved aside.

Another struck toward his legs.

He stepped over it.

A third tried to push him from the wall.

Kaelen turned its momentum against it and drove the rusted strut into the exposed joint beneath its neck.

The machine collapsed.

Another drone came from the side.

Kaelen caught its chain reinforced leg with his foot.

He pulled.

The machine lost balance.

Its own weight carried it over the edge.

The remaining two attacked together.

Kaelen's eyes tracked both.

One was faster.

The other was heavier.

He waited until the faster unit entered striking distance.

Then he moved toward it.

The drone tried to adjust.

Kaelen struck the loose utility chain connecting its rear leg to the damaged frame.

The chain snapped.

The drone's leg folded.

Its body turned sideways.

The second drone collided with it.

Both machines crashed against the wall.

Kaelen stepped forward.

He drove the rusted strut through the exposed control housing of the first.

Then he turned and struck the second at the same point.

Both machines stopped moving.

The arena fell silent.

Ten scrap scouts had entered.

Ten lay destroyed.

Kaelen remained standing.

His breathing was heavier now.

His gray eyes moved across the damaged ledge.

The registry system flickered.

COMBAT WAVE SIX: CLEARED.

The emergency security field around the western gate finally shut down.

CLACK.

The main display flashed several times before returning to grey static.

Kaelen remained where he was.

The rusted durasteel strut hung from his right hand.

His grey canvas waist wrap was torn along one side.

His left arm remained limp.

Blood continued to move slowly down from the damaged upper arm.

The curse wound beneath his right ribs pulsed again.

His heart rate remained forty two.

The crowd did not cheer.

They watched him in silence.

Kaelen slowly raised his eyes toward the luxury boxes.

The gentry who had laughed during the first wave were no longer laughing.

Some stared at him.

Others looked toward their private communication screens.

A few were already arguing with the arena managers.

The Great Colosseum had been designed to make prisoners weaker with every wave.

Instead, every destroyed opponent had left Kaelen with another piece of the arena that he could use.

The first wave had given him the durasteel strut.

The fourth wave had given him the broken high frequency lance handle.

The fifth wave had shown him that even a creature weighing twelve tons could be turned against itself.

Now the sixth wave had revealed something more important.

The arena's resources were running out.

Kaelen looked toward the sealed gates.

There was a faint electronic signal buried beneath the static.

It appeared for less than a second.

DATA TRANSFER: 87 PERCENT.

Kaelen's eyes sharpened.

Vane.

The signal disappeared.

The registry returned to normal.

Kaelen lowered his gaze.

He did not know exactly how Vane was transmitting the data.

He did not know how long the hidden connection would remain active.

But he knew one thing.

Someone outside the arena was still working against the system.

Kaelen tightened his grip around the rusted durasteel strut.

The mechanical voice returned through the public address horns.

"ASSET REGISTRY THIRTY SIX. SIXTH WAVE CLEARED."

A pause followed.

Then the announcer continued.

"PREPARING NEXT COMBAT ROTATION."

The spectators began shouting again.

The sound grew louder as the next gate started to unlock.

Kaelen stood alone on the damaged three meter ledge.

His body was exhausted.

His left arm was nearly useless.

The curse was spreading.

His medical support was almost gone.

But his mind remained clear.

The arena had not broken him.

It had only stripped away everything except the one thing Lysander had failed to remove.

Kaelen's will to survive.

The next gate opened.

He raised his gray eyes toward the darkness beyond it.

The sixth wave was over.

The Great Colosseum was preparing the next challenge.
