Chapter 58 - Chapter 58

The structural damage left by the fourth wave had not yet been repaired. The four automated security speeders remained scattered around the circular combat floor, two of them crushed against the inner wall and the other two lying near the edge of the empty central trench. Their broken propulsion systems released thin streams of smoke, while damaged battery cells continued to leak yellow electrical fluid across the durasteel surface.

The narrow three meter combat ledge was scorched, warped, and covered with a mixture of black carbon dust, chemical residue, and grease from the destroyed machines. The deep trench beneath it remained empty after the acid had been drained during the previous wave, but its lower surface was still glowing with residual heat. Every few seconds, a small burst of steam rose from one of the drainage channels below.

Kaelen stood near the ruined eastern maintenance sector.

His tall, powerful frame was wrapped in nothing but the coarse grey canvas waist wrap. His bare feet were pressed against the damaged durasteel surface, and the toes of his right foot remained close to one of the exposed floor rivets.

His left upper arm was almost completely numb.

The synth canvas patch Jaren had applied had been torn apart during the previous waves. Fresh blood moved slowly down his arm and dripped onto the floor.

His right ribs were worse.

The dark branching veins of the curse wound had spread farther across his side. The temporary chemical block was almost exhausted, allowing the cold burning pressure inside his body to return.

Yet his heart rate remained at forty two beats per minute.

His breathing remained controlled.

His gray eyes remained clear.

Then the floor vibrated.

Kaelen immediately looked toward the southern gate.

The vibration was different from the mechanical movement of the arena system.

It was heavier.

Deeper.

Something was moving beneath the staging level.

The remaining spectators noticed it too.

The fifty thousand people surrounding the arena began shouting again. The luxury booths filled with movement as the gentry leaned toward the safety grates and looked down at the damaged combat floor.

The betting boards flickered.

The previous result disappeared.

A new warning appeared.

WARNING. COMBAT WAVE FIVE INITIALIZED. ASSET LOG ACTIVE.

The crowd erupted.

The fifth gate began to open.

Unlike the previous gates, it did not slide upward.

The reinforced plates were pushed outward from inside.

Metal bent.

Bolts snapped.

The entire gate shook against its locking frame.

Kaelen tightened his grip around the broken high frequency lance handle he had taken from the wreckage of the speeders.

The weapon was badly damaged.

Its main emitter was gone.

Only the reinforced handle and part of the internal electrical channel remained.

A weak yellow current moved across its surface.

It was not enough to function as a proper kinetic lance.

But Kaelen did not need it to function normally.

He needed the electrical system inside it to activate once.

The gate finally broke.

CRASH.

Something enormous pushed through the opening.

The spectators screamed.

A long armored body emerged from the darkness.

The Titan Star Serpent entered the arena.

It was nearly ten meters long.

Its thick body moved across the narrow durasteel ledge in a powerful wave, its flexible spine allowing it to follow the circular shape of the combat floor without falling into the empty trench below.

Its front section rose several meters above the floor.

The creature's body was massive, weighing more than twelve tons.

Large sections of its natural scales had been reinforced with layers of Imperial durasteel. The metal plates were attached directly to the creature's natural armor with heavy chrome fasteners. Violet fluid leaked from several injection points along its neck and upper body.

The serpent's eyes were cloudy and almost completely blind.

But it did not need normal vision.

Small thermal and acoustic organs had been implanted along its lower jaw and neck. They detected heat, movement, vibration, and biological signals.

Kaelen's body gave off a strong biological signature.

The serpent found him immediately.

Its jaws opened.

Three rows of reinforced teeth became visible.

The crowd went wild.

"The Hive Breaker!"

"Kill him!"

"Let the beast tear him apart!"

A wealthy broker leaned over the first tier railing.

"Look at his ribs!" he shouted. "His body is already failing! Fifty thousand points says the serpent crushes him before the next registry update!"

Another voice came through the public address system.

"Your SS rank will not save you, General!"

The insult was followed by laughter.

Kaelen ignored them.

His eyes remained on the serpent.

He studied its movement.

The creature was not a normal predator.

Its body had been altered for arena combat.

Chemical stimulants kept its nervous system in a constant state of aggression. Metal reinforcement increased its physical strength. The implanted sensors compensated for its damaged vision.

But the modifications had also created weaknesses.

Kaelen watched the movement of the steel plates along its body.

One section moved differently from the others.

Behind the third rib cluster.

The metal reinforcement was connected directly to the natural scale matrix there.

That connection also carried the serpent's neural signals.

Kaelen tightened his grip around the broken high frequency lance handle.

The damaged weapon was barely functional. Its main emitter had been destroyed, and only a weak electrical current remained inside the exposed circuit. One ordinary strike would do almost nothing against twelve tons of reinforced biological armor.

Kaelen did not need an ordinary strike.

His gray eyes followed the serpent's movement.

The beast was preparing another charge.

Its head lowered.

Its muscles tightened beneath the overlapping steel plates.

The third rib cluster shifted slightly as the creature transferred its weight forward.

There.

The reinforced plate opened for less than a second whenever the serpent compressed its body before a forward lunge. Beneath that plate was the connection between the natural scale matrix and the implanted neural system.

Kaelen adjusted his stance.

His injured left arm remained useless at his side. He shifted almost all of his weight onto his right leg and lowered his center of gravity.

He would not try to stop the serpent.

He would let it bring the target to him.

The Titan Star Serpent suddenly accelerated.

Its massive body surged forward along the three meter ledge, its steel scales grinding against the durasteel surface. The entire arena shook under its twelve ton mass.

Kaelen waited.

The distance closed.

Ten meters.

Seven.

Five.

The serpent opened its jaws and raised its front section.

Kaelen still did not move.

Three meters.

Two.

The creature committed to the strike.

Kaelen stepped toward it.

Not away.

His movement forced the serpent to adjust its head at the last moment, causing its armored neck to twist and exposing the third rib cluster exactly as Kaelen had predicted.

He dropped beneath the sweeping jaw.

The reinforced teeth passed above his head.

Kaelen slid along the greasy durasteel surface, his shoulder nearly scraping the inner wall.

The serpent's body rushed past him.

Kaelen turned with its momentum.

His gray eyes locked onto the exposed gap.

Now.

He drove the broken high frequency lance handle upward with his right hand.

The jagged metal point punched through the weakened seam between the durasteel plate and the natural scale matrix.

CRUNCH.

Kaelen did not release it.

He twisted the handle deeper, forcing the broken electrical channel directly against the implanted neural connection.

The serpent convulsed.

Kaelen activated the remaining power.

FOOM.

A violent yellow current surged through the exposed neural channel.

The electrical charge did not need to penetrate the serpent's entire body. It entered directly into the modified neural system beneath the third rib cluster.

The Titan Star Serpent released a deafening roar.

Its entire body twisted violently.

Kaelen released the handle and immediately rolled away as the serpent's massive head crashed into the ledge.

BOOM.

The creature's implanted sensors began sending conflicting signals.

Its body tried to turn toward Kaelen.

Its tail moved in the opposite direction.

Its front claws scraped against the durasteel.

The neural disruption had destroyed its coordination.

Kaelen rose onto one knee.

His breathing remained controlled despite the pain spreading through his ribs.

He had one chance left.

The serpent's damaged body began to turn toward him again.

Kaelen watched the movement.

Then his eyes shifted to the empty trench beside the ledge.

He understood exactly where the creature would fall.

The serpent suddenly lunged again.

Its movements were no longer smooth. The damaged neural system forced its body to make sudden corrections, causing its long armored frame to swing unevenly across the narrow ledge.

Kaelen stepped toward the outer wall.

The serpent followed his movement.

Its head turned.

Its front section moved toward him while the rest of its twelve ton body continued along the circular path.

Kaelen waited until the serpent's center of mass passed the damaged section of the ledge.

Then he moved inward.

The serpent tried to correct its direction.

Its rear body continued forward.

Its reinforced scales scraped against the wall.

CRACK.

The impact twisted the creature's body.

The serpent's front claws slipped across the grease covered durasteel.

Its massive frame shifted toward the empty trench.

Kaelen stepped back.

The serpent tried to recover.

Its neural system sent another false correction.

The front section moved left.

The rear section moved right.

Its balance disappeared.

The lower half of its body crossed the edge.

For several seconds, the creature remained partially supported by the narrow ledge. Its claws scraped desperately against the metal while its reinforced scales struck the wall.

Kaelen watched without wasting movement.

The serpent was already defeated.

It simply had not fallen yet.

Kaelen stepped closer.

His right hand still held the broken lance handle.

He drove it into the damaged third rib cluster one final time.

CRUNCH.

The serpent lost the last of its balance.

Its massive body dropped into the empty trench.

BOOM.

The impact shook the entire arena.

Dust rose from the bottom of the basin.

The serpent's armored body lay twisted across the lower surface.

It moved once.

Then stopped.

Silence spread through the Great Colosseum.

The fifty thousand spectators stared down into the trench.

The main registry board flickered.

COMBAT WAVE FIVE: CLEARED.

Kaelen remained on the narrow ledge.

His chest was covered with dust, grease, and blood.

The grey canvas waist wrap was torn along one side.

His left arm hung heavily beside his body.

The broken lance handle remained in his right hand.

His heart rate was still forty two beats per minute.

Kaelen looked down at the dead serpent.

He had not defeated twelve tons of biological mass through strength alone.

He had used the creature's own movement, the narrow arena, the damaged reinforcement, and the weakness created by the colosseum's modifications.

His gray eyes slowly moved toward the luxury booths.

The gentry were no longer laughing.

Some had stopped betting.

Others were already shouting at the arena administrators.

The fifth wave had been designed to end the fight.

Instead, it had given Kaelen another opening.

A faint electronic sound came from the damaged registry board.

Kaelen looked up.

For less than a second, the display flickered.

A small fragment of hidden data appeared beneath the official combat registry.

DATA TRANSFER: 87 PERCENT.

Kaelen recognized it immediately.

Vane.

The signal disappeared.

The arena system returned to normal.

Kaelen said nothing.

He tightened his grip around the broken lance handle and looked toward the next sealed gate.

For the first time since entering the Great Colosseum, the spectators could no longer tell whether they were watching a prisoner fight for survival or a General slowly turning their own arena against them.

The fifth wave was over.

But the Great Colosseum was not finished with him yet.
