The air in the cavernous throne room was dead, heavy with the silence of forgotten ambition and the faint, coppery scent of fried circuitry. It was a silence shattered by the high-pitched shriek of tearing metal as a Doombot, its once-gleaming armor breached and smoking, was hurled through the air like a discarded toy to crash in a mangled heap at the feet of its creator.
Doctor Doom did not flinch. Doom did not pause. Doom's stride, regal and implacable, did not alter. Doom;s green cloak, woven with threads of both advanced polymer and mystic enchantment, billowed with a life of its own as he stepped over the sparking wreckage. Doom armored boot descended, crushing the Doombot's severed head into a fine, metallic powder that hissed and glowed cherry-red before disintegrating into inert ash. The emerald light of Doom's own ambient power seemed to intensify with his passage, a silent, all-consuming aura.
Another Doombot flew past Doom, its trajectory ending in a violent collision with the far wall. Then another, this one bisected by a golden blur, its halves clattering uselessly to the floor. All around them, the last of Doom's elite guard were being dismantled with contemptuous ease. Laughter, high and unhinged, echoed from the chamber's end, a discordant symphony of madness and glee that bounced off the vaulted, gothic ceilings.
"Is this the best you have, Doom?!" the voice shrieked, laced with the dual tones of a broken man and a primal darkness. "You send your toys to greet a god? A true god? You are nothing but a man in a can, a pretender on a stolen throne!"
A searing beam of pure, golden energy, hotter than the surface of a star, lanced through the hall. It struck an invisible barrier a mere centimeter from Doom's faceplate. A shimmering, octagonal sigil of emerald light flared into existence for a microsecond, absorbing the blast completely. The air cracked and sizzled under the strain, yet the ward held. Doom walked through the dissipating energy as if it were a mild spring breeze.
The laughter grew louder, more frantic, and the source finally became fully visible. A figure, wreathed in a chaotic, golden aura of cosmic power, hovered at the far end of the hall. Its form was unstable, a shifting amalgam of a man in a tattered yellow and blue costume and a creature of pure, viscous darkness that seemed to bleed from his pores.
"So, you've come at last, Doom!" the Void cackled, its voice emanating from the man's throat, though it was deeper, more monstrous. "Come to grovel? To mock me? Or to try and chain the sun with your pathetic little power dampeners?" With a contemptuous flick of his wrist, several damaged, sparking dampening devices were tossed aside like pebbles. "I've disabled a few. Soon, I'll be free. Truly free! Free to show this pathetic, insignificant universe and YOU the true meaning of an ending!"
Doom stopped, Doom's gaze finally falling upon the creature before him. It was a gaze of profound pity, of utter contempt. It was the look a monarch gives an insect scuttling across his pristine marble floor.
"Doom has no need to mock a being as fractured as you." Doom's voice resonated, metallic and imperious, laced with an arrogance that could humble gods. "You are not a man. You are a shell. An echo chamber for your own terrors, a puppet dancing on the strings of your own weakness." Doom's gaze swept the room. "You are not a god. You are a frightened child playing with matches in a room full of dynamite. An insect that Doom can crush whenever he so wishes."
The Void shrieked with laughter. "An insect?! And yet you keep me imprisoned, Victor! You fear this insect's bite!"
"Doom does not fear." Doom stated, the words an absolute, immutable law. "Doom prepares. There is a distinction you are incapable of grasping. Your existence, however pitiful, serves a purpose in Doom's grand design. In the kingdom of Doom, all are equal. Equally beneath Doom." Doom raised a gauntleted hand, the metal gleaming. "And now, insect, Doom shall play with you."
With a thought, the remaining power dampeners throughout the facility deactivated. The golden-black aura around the Sentry exploded outwards, a shockwave of pure, unbridled power that cracked the very stone of the walls.
"Now you will see!" the Void roared.
The floor beneath Doom's feet liquified, turning to viscous, grasping quicksand that roiled and bubbled. Doom did not sink. Doom hovered, Doom's boot jets emitting a silent, stabilizing thrust, leaving him levitating an inch above the turmoil. The very air thickened, becoming a toxic, corrosive gas that would strip flesh from bone in seconds. The arcane, shimmering green ward materialized around Doom again, neutralizing the poison before it could even touch the surface of his armor.
Sentry screamed in frustration, and the chamber itself seemed to rebel. The stone walls warped, stretching into grotesque, grasping tendrils that whipped towards Doom. Doom simply raised a hand, and a defensive energy shield, a perfect blend of technology and mysticism, flared to life, incinerating the stone appendages as they made contact.
"Is that the extent of your power?" Doom's voice was a bored drawl. "Pathetic parlor tricks?"
The taunt worked. The Sentry's face, now more the Void's than Robert Reynolds', contorted in a mask of pure rage. He attacked not Doom's body, but his mind.
A psychic maelstrom slammed into Doom's consciousness. Doom was thrown back into his past, forced to relive his greatest traumas in a single, agonizing instant. Doom saw the laboratory of his youth, the hiss of chemicals, the face of his mother, Valeria, her soul trapped in Mephisto's hell. Doom felt the searing heat of the explosion that scarred his face, the shards of metal embedding themselves, a constant reminder of Doom's one great failure. Doom saw the smug, infuriatingly brilliant face of Reed Richards, again and again, out-thinking Doom, out-maneuvering Doom, standing as the world's proclaimed hero while Doom was branded a villain.
But Doom's will was a fortress of adamantium and magic. He walked through the psychic inferno, Doom's mind an impenetrable citadel.
"You show Doom a history Doom has already conquered." Doom spoke, Doom's voice echoing not just in the chamber, but within the psychic landscape Sentry had created. "You show Doom scars Doom has already mastered. You believe you can break Doom with own past? The Void is nothing but a frightened child playing with shadows."
The psychic assault shattered. The Void shrieked, pulling back, and Sentry unleashed a new attack. He reached across time, his golden energy warping the temporal flow around Doom's armor, attempting to age it a million years in a second, to turn the advanced alloy to rust and dust.
Doom's response was instantaneous. Intricate, glowing green runes, etched into the very substructure of his armor, flared to life. They were chronal wards, a sorcerous defense against temporal manipulation. The Sentry's golden energy sizzled and dissipated harmlessly against the ancient magic.
"Your power is raw, untamed." Doom observed, taking a step forward. "You are a hurricane, a wildfire. But Doom… Doom is the unmovable mountain. The unquenchable sea."
Enraged beyond reason, the Sentry lunged. He moved at a speed that was not merely fast, but a localized distortion of reality itself. To Spider-Man, watching from the periphery with Ranger, his masked lenses wide with terror, Sentry simply vanished from one end of the hall and reappeared in the next instant, his fist, wreathed in the power of a million exploding suns, aimed directly at Doom's head.
Doom's hand shot up.
The impact was a soundless concussion that nonetheless shook the very foundations of the earth. Golden energy flared against green mysticism, a stalemate of impossible force that buckled the floor and cracked the vaulted ceiling. Doom caught the supersonic punch. He held it. The air vibrated, thick with power.
"Predictable." Doom grunted, Doom;s mystically augmented strength matching the Sentry's raw cosmic power. With a surge of force, Doom broke the stalemate, hurling Sentry across the room to smash into the far wall with a sickening crunch.
"How?!" Sentry howled, his form flickering violently between man and monster. "This shouldn't be possible!" He tried to reform, to unleash another blast, but the Void's control was wavering, his confidence shattered.
Doom, patience finally exhausted, declared, "Doom grows tired of these kids game."
Doom opened his hand, and from a pocket dimension accessible only to Doom, Doom brought forth the Black Lattice. It was a perfect fusion of hyper-science and arcane geometry, a device that was simultaneously a sphere and a cube, its surface a swirling microcosm of a captive universe. It pulsed with a cold, absolute gravity, a void that promised not destruction, but perfect, eternal order.
Doom threw it.
Sentry tried to dodge. He tried to teleport. He tried to phase through the floor. But the space around him had become thick, heavy, a molasses of distorted physics. Time itself seemed to stretch and warp under the Black Lattice's influence. He was moving, but in agonizing slow motion, his every thought an eternity, his body a prisoner.
The Lattice struck him.
There was no explosion, no flash of light. Only a silent, terrifying implosion. Sentry's form, and the darkness of the Void within him, was pulled, stretched, and compressed. He screamed, a sound that seemed to last for an age as his very being was dragged into the device. Inside the Lattice's swirling nebula, his light and darkness were forcibly separated by the device's internal mechanics, two distinct entities now trapped within the same cosmic prison. The human, Robert Reynolds, was frozen in a state of suspended animation, a silent scream forever etched on his face. The Void, a creature of writhing, formless darkness, was trapped beside him, its chaotic movements slowed to a near-imperceptible crawl, a cosmic horror caged in a temporal prison.
Doom caught the Black Lattice in his palm, studying the struggling creature within with cold, dismissive indifference.
Spider-Man, who had been watching the entire exchange with a mixture of abject terror and slack-jawed awe, finally found his voice. "Uh, Mr. Ranger." he stammered, his own voice a squeak, "what just happened? Did… did Dr. Doom just catch that guy's supersonic punch? Is he really that powerful? And that half-cube, half-ball thingy… did it just… suck him up? Is he okay?" He pointed a trembling finger at the device. "And why were we fighting him? He looked like a hobo, but you said he was, like, a super-duper-strong god-man? Who even is he?"
"Spider-boy." Ranger replied, his own voice calm, almost placid, "the one you call a hobo is Robert Reynolds, the Sentry. One of the most powerful, and tragically unstable, beings in this universe. And you do know him. Or you did, before Doctor Strange and Mister Fantastic, in an act of cosmic necessity, wiped his existence from the world's collective memory to contain the threat of his dark half, the Void. A secret kept by a select, unfortunate few." Ranger explained. "And Doom is not merely 'powerful.' He is Doom. As for the device…" he gave the young hero a gentle nudge forward. "You can ask him. Doom does not bite. Unless you show him your teeth."
Spider-Man gulped audibly, adjusted his mask, and hesitantly approached the imposing, green-cloaked figure. "Mr… Dr. Doom, sir? Can I ask you about the device in your hand? And what it does? Is the Sentry… are they… still alive in there?" He peered at the Lattice, his spider-sense buzzing faintly, picking up the impossibly slow, almost non-existent movements within. "Why are they moving so slow?"
Doom turned his gaze upon the arachnid, a monarch observing a curious, brightly colored specimen. "Arachnid." Doom declared, Doom's voice a regal pronouncement that echoed with absolute authority. "You shall address Doom by his proper title: Doctor Doom."
"Got it! Doctor Doom!" Spider-Man chirped nervously, interrupting.
"Arachnid." Doom's glare, visible even through the impassive metal of his mask, intensified. The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees. "When Doom speaks, you shall remain silent until Doom has concluded. Do you comprehend?"
Spider-Man nodded vigorously, his mask bobbing up and down like a buoy in a storm.
Doom's gaze flickered to Ranger, who was clearly enjoying the spectacle with a faint, amused look. "The device in Doom's hand is Doom's own creation: The Black Lattice. It is not merely a prison; it is a pocket universe, a self-contained reality where the fundamental laws of spacetime are subject to Doom's will. Within its confines, time is dilated to a degree your primitive science would deem impossible. A century within this reality is but a second in the Black Lattice."
Spider-Man's masked lenses widened to their absolute limit. "A whole universe?! With time dilation like that?! How is that even possible? That should be… impossible!" He scratched his head, his mind reeling, trying to process the sheer scale of the concept.
Doom held the Black Lattice aloft, the tiny, trapped figures of Sentry and the Void swirling within its cosmic depths, a testament to Doom's absolute mastery over both science and sorcery.
"Arachnid." Doom stated, his voice the final, absolute word on the matter. "The rules of what is possible are rewritten when Doom wishes it so."
