Chapter 3 -  Seele’s Power — Purging Cursed Spirits

A few minutes later, An Xora felt the cursed energy within his body gradually settle down.

According to the worldview of the jujutsu world, he could now be considered a jujutsu sorcerer—albeit one without a cursed technique, and with no idea what grade he would fall under in the sorcerer ranking system.

Then again, judged by the standards of the jujutsu world, someone like him—a newly awakened, unaffiliated "wild" sorcerer who hadn't demonstrated any combat ability and hadn't undergone any official certification—would probably be classified as no more than a Grade 4 sorcerer at best.

Although An Xora felt that his current strength shouldn't be limited to just Grade 4, this wasn't confidence in himself so much as confidence in the effects of being enhanced by Seele using the Authority of the Herrscher of Life and Death.

"Ding! Detected that with Seele's assistance, the Host has awakened cursed energy and become a jujutsu sorcerer. Reward: 500 points."

"Ding! Detected that Seele eliminated a Grade 3 cursed spirit in order to protect the Host. Reward: 20 points."

The two system notifications rang in his ears, snapping An Xora back to reality.

"According to the original plot, although the number of jujutsu sorcerers is pretty small overall, cursed spirits shouldn't normally be showing up inside residential areas. So why is it that the moment I granted Seele the Authority of Life and Death, a cursed spirit immediately showed up, drawn over here?"

It wasn't that cursed spirits never entered residential areas. After all, with so few sorcerers around, occasional oversights and accidents were normal.

But running into one the moment he transmigrated—wasn't his luck a bit too bad?

"Seele thinks… it might be because the place where Big Brother An Xora lives isn't very normal to begin with…"

Seele, standing nearby, hesitated a little before speaking.

"The place I live… isn't normal?"

Hearing this, An Xora suddenly realized that after being forcibly transmigrated into the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, he hadn't actually taken the time to understand his new identity.

His body… was still his own, unchanged from before transmigration. The only difference was that after arriving in this world, it had been remodeled by Seele using the power of Creation, becoming far healthier than before.

As for memories, after thinking carefully, An Xora did find memories corresponding to his identity in this world, along with some related details. Since neither his body nor his name had changed, it was most likely something the system had directly implanted—much like how it assigned reasonable identities to clones.

"No parents, raised in an orphanage, dropped out after high school and started working…"

Ignoring these cliché background settings, An Xora quickly focused on the memories related to the apartment he was living in.

And he had to admit—the location of this apartment was truly something else. No wonder Seele had looked hesitant earlier.

Located in the suburbs, remote to the point of being practically deserted. Nearby was an abandoned construction site that was somewhat famous online as a suicide hotspot. A few kilometers away stood an abandoned cemetery. Several nearby apartment buildings had histories of deaths and frequent rumors of hauntings. The nearest subway station was a half-hour bike ride away.

Thanks to all this, despite decent interior renovations, rent in the surrounding apartments had plummeted. Utilities were half-price, short-term leases were allowed, and signing for a year or more came with additional discounts.

An Xora's previous self had been a staunch atheist. Coupled with a job that didn't require going out much, he'd moved here hoping to snag a bargain.

It could be said that in an ordinary world, that mindset wouldn't have been a problem at all.

But this was Jujutsu Kaisen—where fear and negative emotions could literally give birth to man-eating cursed spirits.

"Looks like if I want to live peacefully, I'll have to clear out all the cursed spirits in the surrounding area."

An Xora sighed.

"Isn't that perfect? Killing cursed spirits earns points. Cursed spirits like the one just now—even if dozens of them came, or even if they were tens of times stronger—still wouldn't be a match for me and Seele."

At some point, Dark Seele had drifted back over, speaking calmly.

Clearly, she didn't take the cursed spirits outside seriously at all and was completely confident in her strength.

Which made sense. With Quantumization, the Authority of the Herrscher of Life and Death, and a bottomless reserve of cursed energy, whether it was Seele or Dark Seele, their baseline strength in this world started at special grade.

With the corresponding character's memories, there was no issue of not knowing how to use their powers. Add to that knowledge of the original plot…

An Xora felt that he could already observe a three-second moment of silence for the cursed spirits in the area.

That said, once he thought about how those cursed spirits all translated into shiny white points, An Xora immediately became eager and pulled Seele along, preparing to head out.

"By the way, what identity did the system assign to you, Seele?"

"A fellow orphan from the same orphanage as Big Brother An Xora. After the orphanage was demolished, I started living together with Big Brother An Xora."

Seele answered softly.

There wasn't much to say about that identity. After all, An Xora hadn't spent extra points to give Seele a special background, so the system-generated default identities for clones were usually quite ordinary.

That said, when manifesting Seele, he had spent an extra thousand points to account for her Stigmata and Dark Seele—the Stigmata consciousness and second personality—classifying them as special talents.

Leaving the apartment, it was already evening.

Because of poor maintenance, only a few of the streetlights along the road were still functioning. Under the dim glow, the chirping of insects echoed intermittently through the darkness.

Fortunately, An Xora didn't spot any cursed spirits near the apartment. It seemed that the one earlier had most likely wandered over by coincidence.

"Most of the cursed energy in the area is gathering over there. That should be where the cursed spirits are concentrated."

Dark Seele's voice sounded beside An Xora's ear, pointing him in the right direction.

"Seele can feel it too. The cursed spirits are gathering at that abandoned construction site over there."

Seele nodded as well, her gaze turning toward the abandoned site west of the apartment complex, some distance away.

The very same place An Xora had mentioned earlier—the locally infamous suicide hotspot.

"Alright, let's head over there."

With the direction confirmed, An Xora and Seele quickly arrived at the entrance of the abandoned construction site.

Feeling the cursed energy rushing toward them, it was clear that under these conditions, cursed spirits would definitely be born here—and in large numbers.

So—

"Do it."

An Xora spoke decisively, then calmly stepped back behind Seele.

Although An Xora could now be considered a jujutsu sorcerer—and not a bottom-tier one at that—why should he make a move when Seele was here?

"Leave it to Seele."

At her words, Seele raised a hand, and a scythe appeared in her grasp—the weapon she wielded during her Stygian Nymph phase in the game, Path to Acheron.

Then, with a light tap of her toe, the petite figure carrying the massive scythe vanished from An Xora's sight in an instant.
