Chapter 1 - Night of madness

Park Jae-Hyun had learned very early how to control what he showed to the world.

At twenty-six, he was the leader of the group VERTIGO, main vocalist, the public face of one of the most influential boy bands of the moment. Calm, measured, always impeccable. An image meticulously crafted over the years — and it always felt the same to him.

His life was a strict schedule: rehearsals, concerts, promotions, travels.

But this week was an exception.

VERTIGO was in Seoul for a specific event: the wedding of Ethan Cole.

Ethan Cole, a thirty-three-year-old American actor and longtime friend of the group's producer, had personally invited the boys to attend the ceremony scheduled two days later. An official invitation, approved by management, written clearly into their itinerary.

The bachelor party was part of the program.

That night, they were not idols.

They were simply guests.

The private lounge of the five-star hotel had been fully reserved for the occasion. A discreet evening, away from the spotlights, designed for a select circle of men. Actors, producers, investors, a few foreign artists. Many people, but none by chance.

VERTIGO occupied a table among others.

Kim Min-Jae, the main dancer, immediately blended into the atmosphere, laughing loudly, a glass in hand.

Lee Dong-Woo, the rapper, conversed calmly with an older man, attentive and composed.

Choi Tae-Ho, the youngest, watched the room with fascination.

Jae-Hyun, for his part, enjoyed this rare anonymity.

Here, no one expected him to smile for a camera. He could breathe.

The music gradually slowed, a subtle signal of a shift in the atmosphere.

The lights dimmed as the dancers entered.

They were elegant, professional, perfectly at ease. A performance designed to complement the evening, sensuous, even excessive — after all, these were not just any clients, but wealthy, discerning patrons.

At the center advanced Exsy Dewy.

Exsy Dewy was not her birth name.

Born Selena Montess, she had left that name behind when she left her home, her family, and everything she no longer wanted to be.

Today, she was a recognized luxury escort, a professional dancer in the most exclusive private circles. She knew exactly where she was stepping — and with whom.

Exsy danced with confidence. She wanted to be noticed because she knew precisely what was expected of her. Every gesture was controlled, precise, almost detached.

Jae-Hyun lifted his eyes, for no particular reason.

He noticed her.

Their eyes met briefly.

No smile.

No surprise.

Just silent recognition.

The music continued. The evening resumed its flow.

VERTIGO remained at their table. Exsy continued her performance.

But something had been set in motion.

Not a story.

Not yet.

Only the starting point.

Exsy Dewy didn't think about those watching her.

She had long since learned to ignore the gazes, to let them slide over her without ever absorbing them. In this kind of evening, they were everywhere: leaning in, curious, sometimes insistent. She knew them. She could read them. And above all, she knew how to maintain the necessary distance.

The stage was part of her routine.

She danced because it was her role, because she was paid to, and because she had mastered this art perfectly. Her body followed the music with quiet precision, without haste, without unnecessary provocation. She didn't need to overdo it.

When the performance ended, she left the stage with the other girls, moving through the room as if she already knew every corner.

"Great atmosphere tonight," Chloe Anderson said, grabbing a glass of champagne on the way.

"Lots of people," Exsy replied calmly.

Amina Diallo nodded, observing the guests with her usual calm.

Luna Park was already laughing with a server she knew.

Roxie Miller, true to herself, looked slightly annoyed.

"Too many men," Roxie murmured.

"That's the point," Chloe smiled in response.

Exsy sat at the bar, accepting a drink without comment. She wrapped her fingers around the cold crystal, letting her thoughts drift for a moment. This kind of place neither scared her nor tempted her. It was a set. Nothing more.

And yet, she felt something different.

Not a threat.

Not excitement.

A presence.

She didn't have to search long to know where it was coming from.

A few tables away, a man drew less attention than the others — and that was precisely what struck her. He wasn't the loudest. Nor the most demonstrative. He observed without imposing, his gaze calm, almost distant.

Park Jae-Hyun.

She didn't know his name at that moment.

But she recognized this type of man.

Those who carry something heavy without ever showing it.

Exsy looked away first. Not out of embarrassment. Out of habit. She had no reason to linger on any particular guest. She took a sip of her drink, listened distractedly to Chloe talk about a client who talked too much, answered Amina with a simple nod.

The evening followed its rhythm.

Later, as the music returned to a lighter tempo, Exsy rose to join a quieter space near the large bay windows. The view of Seoul was breathtaking, the city spreading below in lights like an unreal backdrop.

"Exsy."

The voice was calm. Polite.

She turned.

The man she had noticed earlier stood a few steps away, alone. Dark suit, straight posture, composed expression.

"Yes?"

He hesitated for a fraction of a second. An almost imperceptible detail.

"I just wanted to say your performance was… very elegant."

No forced smile.

No undertone.

Exsy looked at him for a moment before responding.

"Thank you."

She could have stopped there. She often did. But something in his manner — calm, without expectation — held her attention.

"You're here for the wedding?" she asked.

He nodded.

"Yes. A close friend. And you?"

"I'm working."

The answer was simple. Clear. No justification.

A silence settled. Not uncomfortable. Just present.

"Park Jae-Hyun," he finally said.

"Exsy Dewy."

She offered no further explanation.

They stood there for a few more seconds, the city in the background, the music muffled by the thick glass.

Then someone called Jae-Hyun from the table.

Someone waved at Exsy from the other side of the room.

They exchanged one last glance.

"Have a good evening," he said.

"You too," she replied.

They went their separate ways.

Exsy rejoined the other girls, her face unchanged.

But deep down, a thought had settled.

This encounter was nothing extraordinary.

And yet, she knew.

Some presences leave a mark not by what they do…

but by what they do not demand.
