Chapter 37 - Mirror of the Moon

The mist swirled around me, dense and cold, pressing against my skin like invisible hands. Kshatri's grip on mine was firm, grounding me, yet I could feel the forest's pulse, strange and rhythmic, syncing with my own heartbeat.

Ahead, the figure moved gracefully, every motion a perfect mirror of mine. Blue patterns shimmered across its feline-human form, identical to the markings I had first noticed when I transformed. But this was not me. Not exactly. It was… something else—my reflection given life, or perhaps a part of me I had yet to understand.

It stopped, tilting its head. Its amber eyes glowed softly, and I felt its gaze pierce through my thoughts. "You have come far, Luna. But the Hunt is not about skill alone… it is about choice, about understanding what you carry within."

I swallowed hard, heart pounding. "What… what do you want from me?" I whispered, voice shaking. "Why are you here?"

The figure's tail flicked, a slow, deliberate movement, mirroring mine. "I am your shadow, your potential… what the Beastworld sees in you. To move forward, you must face me, understand me, and accept what you are… or what you could become."

Kshatri's patterns flared, tail brushing mine. "Luna… remember, whatever it tries, we face it together," he murmured. "I've got you."

I nodded, taking a deep breath. "Okay… together."

The shadow stepped closer, and the mist thickened, forming walls of soft luminescence that obscured the path behind us. Every instinct screamed caution. Every step forward felt like walking into the unknown.

"Show me your humanity," it whispered, voice threading through my mind. "Show me your instinct. Show me your heart."

I closed my eyes, letting my senses guide me. Smell first—yes, the subtle scent of Kshatri's fur, of the forest floor, of the faint hum of moonlight pollen. Then hearing—the gentle rustle of leaves, the whispers of the mist. Then… instinct.

I opened my eyes, moving fluidly, mirroring the figure's actions without hesitation. Every leap, twist, and sway had purpose. I felt Kshatri beside me, adapting to my rhythm, our patterns synchronizing perfectly. Together, we formed a single unit, instinct and trust fused.

The figure paused, its amber eyes glowing brighter. "You adapt… you trust… but can you lead?"

I tilted my head, understanding dawning. "Lead… the way we did with the alpha… and the sentinels?" I whispered.

"Yes. Lead, and prove your worth to the forest and yourself."

The mist parted slightly, revealing a path lined with silver stones glowing faintly under the moonlight. The shadow moved ahead, gesturing for me to follow. Each step was a challenge—a test of courage, intuition, and decision-making. The path shifted as we walked, stones rising and falling, bridges forming and disappearing.

At one point, a chasm opened beneath us, too wide to leap. My shadow-mirror hovered above, mimicking my hesitation, daring me to act. Kshatri's hand pressed against my back. "You can do it. Trust yourself. Trust us."

I inhaled sharply, focusing on what I had learned—the combination of instinct, skill, and human ingenuity. I spotted a series of vines woven across the chasm, barely visible under the moonlight. Timing our jumps, Kshatri and I leapt, landing safely on the other side.

The shadow watched silently, then clapped once—a sound that resonated in the mind rather than the ears. "Well done. But your heart must show one more truth: compassion, even in the face of fear."

Suddenly, multiple illusory versions of the shadow appeared, surrounding us. Each one seemed real, each one mirrored my fears—failures I had experienced, doubts I had felt, memories of being alone in a world I didn't understand.

Kshatri's patterns flared in alarm, tail brushing mine. "Focus, Luna! Don't let them confuse you!"

I closed my eyes, inhaling deeply, letting my humanity guide me. Instead of attacking or running, I extended my hands toward the illusions, letting my instinct and empathy reach them. One by one, they paused, flickered, and dissipated, leaving only the original shadow.

"You have passed the heart test," it whispered. "But the final choice remains. What will you do with your power, your gift, your bond? Will you embrace the path of a leader, protector, and bridge between worlds… or turn away?"

I looked at Kshatri, whose patterns flared softly, a quiet reassurance. "We… we face it together. Whatever it is, we embrace it. Step forward, no matter what."

The shadow's amber eyes softened. It raised a hand and pointed toward the mist ahead. "Then follow. But know this: the path you choose will shape not only your destiny but the fate of the Beastworld itself. One wrong step… and all could be lost."

I felt a surge of determination. My identity, my humanity, my bond with Kshatri—all of it was a weapon and a shield. I stepped forward, patterns flaring brightly in response to the shadow's gaze.

And then, the mist parted, revealing a towering structure made entirely of moonlight and shadows, pulsating with energy. Strange runes floated around it, rotating slowly, and at the very top… I saw a figure I recognized from a dream, cloaked in light, arms outstretched.

My breath caught. "That… that's the Elder."

Kshatri pressed close, tail brushing mine. "Luna… whatever awaits us there… we face it together."

I nodded, heart hammering, tail coiling tightly around his wrist. But as we began to ascend toward the structure, the shadow whispered one final message directly into my mind:

"Not everything is as it seems… and some truths will only be revealed in sacrifice."

I froze, pulse racing. The mist swirled violently around us, the moonlight tower glowing brighter, and I realized: this next step… would change everything.
