Chapter 36 - The Rune’s Path

The glowing mark on the tree pulsed faintly, as if breathing. I reached out instinctively, fingertips brushing the luminous surface. A soft hum resonated through the forest, vibrating up my arm and into my chest. It was not just a symbol—it was a call, a signal, a guide.

Kshatri's hand rested over mine, patterns flickering in rhythm with the rune's pulse. "Are you ready?" he murmured. His voice was calm, but his eyes betrayed the tension, the awareness that whatever awaited us could be far beyond our previous trials.

I nodded, heart pounding. "I think… we don't have a choice. We follow it."

We stepped cautiously into the forest, the rune's glow casting pale light across twisted roots and low-hanging branches. Every step seemed to awaken the forest around us. Leaves shivered even without wind. Shadows moved unnaturally, and faint whispers echoed through the trees—soft, unintelligible, almost beckoning us deeper.

"This forest… it feels alive," I whispered, ears swiveling. "Like it's watching us… guiding us."

Kshatri's gaze was sharp, scanning every shadow. "Or testing us," he said. "Either way, stay close. We move as one."

The path led us through dense undergrowth, the glowing rune now embedded faintly on stones, tree trunks, even the moss covering the ground. I realized we weren't just following a symbol—we were following a trail specifically designed for us, almost as if the forest itself acknowledged our presence and our potential.

"Look there," Kshatri murmured, pointing to a cluster of glowing fungi. "Something's moving."

From the pale light emerged creatures unlike anything I had seen. They were feline in form, yet translucent, their bodies shimmering like moonlight on water. Eyes luminous, tails flickering with faint light, and movements fluid, almost hypnotic. They circled us cautiously, growls low but curious.

"They're… sentinels," I murmured, awe and fear mingling in my chest. "Guarding… something."

One of the creatures stepped forward, larger than the rest. Its eyes locked onto mine. Patterns flared along its body, forming shapes that seemed to communicate directly with my mind. Then, in a soft, echoing voice—though not spoken aloud, more like a vibration in my mind—it said:

"Prove your heart… or turn back."

I swallowed hard. "Kshatri… I think it wants us to… show it our bond, our… trust."

He nodded, tail brushing mine instinctively. "Then we do it."

Step by step, we followed the feline sentinels, navigating puzzles of light and shadow that required us to move in perfect synchrony, read subtle cues, and rely on instinct more than strength. Each test was delicate, testing both strategy and emotional awareness. A wrong step might trigger traps or provoke the guardians.

At one point, we reached a clearing where the ground shimmered like liquid silver under the moonlight. In the center floated a strange crystal, suspended above the ground, glowing faintly blue and white. The rune's pulse emanated from it, connecting the forest, the sentinels, and me.

"This… this must be the source," I whispered. I could feel my pulse syncing with the crystal's rhythm, almost as if it were calling to me personally.

Before we could approach, the sentinels tensed, ears flat. Shadows shifted unnaturally, forming a massive, humanoid figure composed of darkness and light. Its amber eyes glowed fiercely, and its voice, deep and resonant, echoed through my mind:

"Only those worthy may claim the path. Only those who embrace both instinct and humanity."

Kshatri tightened his grip on my hand, patterns flaring in synchronization with mine. "Whatever happens… we face it together," he whispered.

The figure lunged—not physically, but mentally, pressing against my thoughts, forcing me to confront memories of my human world, my fears, and the instincts I had honed in Beastworld. My heart raced, and I felt a sudden surge of energy, a connection to the rune, the sentinels, and Kshatri. Patterns along my arms flared brilliantly, synchronizing fully with his.

The shadowy figure paused, almost startled. Then, with a voice like a whisper in a storm, it said:

"Your heart… is stronger than I expected. But the path is only beginning."

It vanished, leaving only a single glowing trail leading away from the crystal, deeper into a part of the forest shrouded in perpetual mist.

Kshatri exhaled slowly, pulling me close. "Did… you feel that?"

I nodded, eyes wide. "It wasn't just a challenge… it was a message. Something… bigger than us."

Before we could move toward the trail, the mist thickened, forming shapes—faint silhouettes of creatures I couldn't recognize. Some were feline, some humanoid, others completely alien. They watched us silently, motionless, yet their presence pressed on my mind, whispering faintly:

"The key… the key… the key…"

I shivered. My heart pounded. The rune, the shadow, the sentinels—it was all connected. And I was at the center.

Kshatri pressed a hand to my shoulder. "Luna… whatever it wants, we face it together. Step by step."

I nodded, swallowing my fear, gripping his hand tightly. "Step by step," I echoed.

But as we stepped into the mist, the glowing trail ahead shifted—like it knew we were coming. And then I realized something that made my stomach drop: the mist formed a figure… that looked exactly like me.

It raised a hand. Its patterns glowed faintly blue, identical to mine. And its voice, echoing perfectly in my mind, said:

"I am you… or what you could become. Choose wisely."

I froze, tail bristling, heart hammering. Kshatri's eyes widened, his patterns flickering in shock. The forest held its breath, the crystal's pulse echoing through the clearing.

I swallowed hard, voice barely a whisper: "This… this is my true test, isn't it?"

The figure smiled faintly, an impossible mirror of myself, and the mist thickened, swirling around us like a storm.

And then, the figure stepped forward…
